  • Why isn't the letter "U" used on monuments & statues?

For example, "VNIVERSAL" engraved under a statue, instead of "UNIVERSAL". I have noticed numerous examples of this -- the letter "U" is always substituted by "V" on monuments whenever an enscription is engraved on it.

I don't see substitutions for any other letter of the alphabet -- only "U". Why is this so?

  • How do I transfer my YouTube playlist from one computer to another?

I generated a playlist on YouTube. Then I purchased a new computer.

When I logged into in YouTube account, all my playlists were gone!

I thought this information was stored on my YouTube account. Is it stored on my old computer instead? If so, where?

And is there any way of getting them back & storing them on my new computer?

  • What should I say to an employer who wants to cut my salary?

I was hired to work in a finance department of a non-profit agency for a 90-day probationary period. Since then, the Director of Finance has left, and a fellow employee was promoted to his position. He told me he wants to bring me on full-time, but with a cut in my hourly rate that, according to my calculations, will lower my salary by about $5500/yr.

If I accept the offer, I will work 5 more hours a week, with benefits, but actually receive a lower paycheck than what I'm currently receiving as a part-time employee.

Here's what is interesting: Since I work with payroll, I know what everyone makes, including a co-worker who does similar work...and gets the same rate that I'm getting now. Every indication is that I will be underpaid for the work I am doing if I accept this offer.

I want to try to negotiate a higher rate w/ the new Director, but am unsure whether or not it is wise to bring up that I know what Joe makes and what Sally makes as a way to help justify my argument that I deserve more.

Should I mention this? If not, I'd appreciate your input on what I should say during our meeting this week. Thanks.

  • What would you recommend for a computer case?

I am having someone put together a computer for me, but am unsure about the case he was going to use. There are so many cases out there, it is difficult to narrow it down to a few.

I am planning to use 2 Hard Drives: a SSD for the Operating System, and a conventional drive for the data. The Motherboard presently is an ASRock 275 Pro3 LGA 1155 Intel Z75 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s. For the PSU, presently an APEVIA ATX-AS520W-BK 520w ATX Power Supply.

I'm not much of a gamer, so I believe a mid-tower would be fine. Want to keep the price relatively low (so I can afford other quality components). Not overly concerned about appearances, but will insist on excellent ventilation / cooling.

Any specific models (or even manufacturers) you can suggest would be very helpful.

    Thank you.

  • Probability question: drawing coins from a jar?

Suppose I have a jar with 5 nickels, 8 dimes, and 7 quarters. What is the probability of reaching into the jar one time, and drawing 2 nickels, 2 dimes, and 1 quarter?

I posted this question before, with only 1 (wrong) response. Math geeks & geekettes -- I know you're out there! Please help.

  • What is the best way to help our new " 'fraidy cat" ?

We brought our new cat home yesterday, and I've never seen one act like this! She wouldn't leave the cat carrier when we opened its door, so I popped off the top. She eventually climbed out, then scooted underneath a couch, and she has remained there for the past 24 hours!

The previous owners said they wanted to sell their cat because they also had a dog, who apparently gave the cat a hard time.

I understand how the dog & a move to a new environment can be quite traumatic, but we are getting worried. An entire day in hiding seems quite a long time to us.

Whenever I poke my head underneath the couch, the cat is always awake, and sometimes changes positions, but will not leave. We want the cat to feel at home & safe, but we are discouraged by her behavior.

What would you recommend doing (or not doing) under these circumstances?

  • What is your reaction to the news that Miss America, who competed as Miss New York, is actually from Alabama?

It has just been revealed that Miss New York was born & raised in Alabama, residing there the first 18 years of her life. Then she moved to Brooklyn to further her education, and has only resided there the past several years. What do you think? Should our reigning queen really be considered the former "Miss New York"?

Would especially love to hear from New Yorkers re: this!

  • Hasn't the news media been too intrusive re: Newtown, CT?

Shouldn't parents have privacy to grieve, instead of wondering whether cameras will try to photograph them as they collapse from the horror? Is it really any of our business to hear the names of and photographs of and character sketches of all the children? Is the media really doing us a service by digging for & endlessly rehashing every sordid little detail they can find?

People are beginning to get drunk off their own adrenaline. It's all I hear some people talk about, everywhere I go. And the media keeps throwing more gasoline on the fire!

Don't get me wrong -- this was as much a nightmare to me as anyone. But is there any benefit from the news media's continuous fanning of the flames, endlessly replaying the events, interviewing people who state the obvious again & again? Shouldn't they start encouraging us to move on, before some of us go crazy obsessing over this whole thing?

  • What uses would there be for rocks & stones I dug up while gardening?

I've done a lot of work tilling the ground, but now I'm stuck with lots of random stones of all shapes & sizes. I can't just let them sit in a pile! Can someone suggest any good way to use them, or even a business/industry that might find them useful for some reason?

If not, how & where would you suggest disposing of them? I'm sure some places might be illegal. And don't forget, rocks are heavy & not that easy to transport!

I realize I might be setting myself up for some sarcastic answers! That's OK, laughter is good! :D But this is a serious question. I'd like to put these rocks to good use if I can. Ideas?

  • Which of these car repairs would be high priority?

I put a used car through an inspection with my mechanic. He listed the following problems:

    (1) Water condensation in tail light

    (2) Oil pan gasket leaking

    (3) Both rear trailing arm bushings split

    (4) 4-wheel alignment

    (5) Both rear toe adjusting links bushings worn - very rusted

    (6) Valve cover gasket leaking.

Mechanic estimated repairing everything would be about $800-1000. If I purchase the car, I'd like to take care of the most urgent problems first, and let some go until later. Which of these in your view would you fix immediately, and which can wait?

    Thanks for your input.

  • Would it cause problems to purchase car from Craig's List if individual seller was actually a dealer?

I found an impressive car, price is reasonable, seller had all service records from previous owner. Test drove car & had my mechanic check it out. Everything looks great, except the owner doesn't have a title yet (claims he just recently purchased the car, and it will be arriving in the mail shortly).

I know not to hand over one dollar until the title comes in. But I have some evidence this seller may in fact be a dealer. Do you think this would necessarily cause any problems if I purchased the vehicle from him? Is there anything else you would watch out for under these circumstances?

Thanks for any insights you can pass on.

  • Should I replace my transmission, or junk my car?

The transmission recently blew on my 1994 Acura Integra. I bought it new, and it has served me very well, although it now has 214K miles & is starting to rust. My mechanic can replace the transmission with another that has 96K, but the estimate is $1800 for all parts & labor (which is still much less than another who would rebuild the existing one for $2800!).

I've always loved my car, and I would hate to part with it, but if you were in my situation, would you use this money towards the purchase of a used car instead?

  • Is a roll of Bicentennial quarters worth keeping?

I stumbled upon some old change & put together 40 Bicentennial Washington quarters (all dated 1976 w/ no mint mark). Circulated but nice condition. It has an obverse side unique to that year. Do you think this would have any value now or in the future? Or would I be better off just making a $10 bank deposit?

  • Can someone please help a Gentile understand what it means to be Jewish?

There is a nation of Israel. There are Russian Jews, Polish Jews, and American Jews. But Jews can also be Orthodox or Reformed. There are also "Non-Practicing" Jews & even Messianic Jews. I'm confused...I don't understand the common denominator between all these people. Is being Jewish a religion? Or is it a nationality? Neither? Both? If so, how is that possible? Please straighten me out or refer me to a resource that can clarify this for me. Thank you, and Shalom!

  • How would you solve this inequality for X: 5x^3 -15x^2 < 0?

I ended up with x<3, but that can't be right...because if x=0, I would end up with 0 < 0. Is dividing both sides of an inequality by x-squared an incorrect step? (Since x^2 must be positive, the sign wouldn't flip). Appreciate your insights. Thank you.

  • I pulled a hamstring 2 weeks before a race! How should I treat this injury if I still plan to run?

I was training for a 5K to support breast cancer research. It is a very important race for me to run. It doesn't seem to be a major injury; but the pain was enough to stop me from running. I don't know what else to do besides rest. Should I expect this to heal by May 7th? And would you advise walking the 5K distance instead of running to keep myself in shape for race day?

Thanks for any insights you can offer.

Someone typed this at the end of a chat, after I helped her out with something. Sorry, I don't know what language it is. I don't know if I should be happy or insulted! Can you help translate? Thanks!
