  • Kolkota airport to Howrah railway station on a weekday (Thursday)?

I'm planning to book a flight to Kolkota arriving there at 11:55 hrs (don't have much choices on this), and I've to rush to Howrah railway station to catch a train from there at 14:30 hrs. I want to know if it'd be feasible to catch the train given the time gap of only 2.5 hrs, and constraints like midday traffic, distance from airport to station, and day of the week (will be Thursday), etc.

Also how much is the actual distance from airport to the railway station, and the charges of a prepaid taxi.

  • Overnight short stay option at Howrah station?

Will be reaching Kolkota on a Wed night by flight at around 11 pm night, and need to catch the Shatabdi at 6 am next morning from Howrah station. So my questions:

    1) What is the best and safest (preferably not costly) way to reach Howrah station at that time of the night from the airport. How much should I expect to pay for that option (what is the distance between the two places?)

    2) Once at Howrah station, where can I spend a few night hours until I catch that 6 am train. Are any short duration decent accommodations (with attd toilet) on the station premises itself. Basically what could be my choices and at what cost.

Only serious answers are requested here.

  • Digital camera recommendations for a 6 year old kid?

My kid shows quite a bit of interest in my camera and photography when I'm taking pics. And I chanced upon this article "Getting your kids started with taking digital photos" at http://www.hp.com/united-states/consumer/digital_p... This got me thinking of buying a kid friendly camera, as described in this article for my kid.

I've a top range DSLR and wouldn't prefer to share that with a kid. So you experts out there, can you recommend a digital camera for a kid that is:

    1. Suitable for a 6.5 year old

    2. Cheap enough (prefer under $100)

    3. Meets the recommended guidelines of the article, viz.

    * Is small, so your child can hold it easily

    * Has fully automatic settings

    * Can turn itself off automatically

    * Is simple to use and has easy options for transferring pictures

    * Is durable-just in case

Recommendations along with your own experience introducing photography to kids would be appreciated.

  • Can I board a Delta flight from a layover point?

I was looking for a Delta flight from airport A to airport B which is a non-stop route for them. However for my dates, the tickets are too costly. Searching around with airports nearby to airport A, I found that if I take a Delta flight from airport C, then I get tickets way cheaper. This flight from airport C to airport B is not a non-stop route, however the irony is that the layover is in airport A! And I want to travel from airport A in the first place.

So my question is if I purchase this ticket from airport C to airport B via airport A, then would it be possible for me to skip the flight from airport C to airport A, and then take only the flight from airport A to airport B.

Do you think it will be a problem boarding this way? Both when there is baggage to check and when only cabin bag?

    Your expert opinion is requested.

  • China Eastern Airline's baggage policy experience ... Anyone?

I've a flight on China Eastern from Shanghai to Delhi in economy. For cabin bag weight/peice limit, I did some searching around, and found from http://www2.flychinaeastern.us/ctva781/tripPrepara... the following: "Economy Class - 7kg (15 lbs)"

Now my question is to those who had flying experience on this airline:

Are they too strict on baggage? I've one roller bag with my laptop, that should fit under 7 kgs. But I've another cabin bag for both my SLR camera and lens, and a camcorder.

These items cannot be kept in my checked bag due to obvious safety issue. Also their website doesn't says if they allow other bags like camera bags, etc.

When I called their office in US, the agent was very impatient to hangup on me & barely told that the cabin weight limit is only 4.9 kgs. So I'm confused.

Do you think I'll be able to carry my rolling laptop bag and another camera bag (as described above) without being forced to either check in one of the item or pay excess baggage?

  • Which side plane seat gives best aerial view of Beijing?

I'll be arriving in Beijing during day time (around 1500 hrs). Since this is my first visit to Beijing, I was hoping to catch a good aerial view of the city while the plane lands.

I already have a right window seat on the plane (right side assuming you are standing facing the pilot's end).

    1. For those of you who have actual experience of Beijing's aerial view (preferably more than one time using both sides view), can you tell me if I should instead try for a left side window seat to afford a better aerial view of Beijing?

    2. Also from a overall travel perspective (flight starting from Chicago), which side window seat you think will give the best possible view?

  • New tires for 2003 Toyota Camry LE?

The car has 32K miles on it. During servicing the dealer advised that the tires need to be replaced as they are all worned out & offered to replace them under a 'special offer' with 60K mile Yokohama tires for total $419+tax.

I've never purchased tires before, still it sounds pricey to me. Also I want to research my options before purchasing. So for now I refused this offer. I've now the following questions for you tire specialists out there:

    a. Is it normal for Camry tires to wear out in 32K miles under normal driving.

    b. Is there a good site I can find out tips, tricks, pitfalls, etc. involved in purchasing new tires. Basically all that I need to know about purchasing new tires, especially as a first time (ie. novice) buyer.

    c. What are some good places to buy tires (I'd prefer physical stores). What should I look for in the store.

    d. What are the good brands, and what brands must be avoided.

Any other things I should know before purchasing new tires?

  • Is there a free travel route optimization site?

I have about 10 local addresses that I need to visit and they are spread all across town. Is there a free site where I can input all these addresses and it can map out the most efficient route using which I'll need to travel the least and it will be the most efficient route?

Even if this site can't map them out together, as long as it can give me the required order of the addresses, that would be fine with me.

  • Best highway to arrive to Chicago from south side (I-65) on this Sunday just before labor day?

I'll be coming from south (I-65 N) to Schaumburg this Sunday just before Labor day and need advise on what would be the best route once near Chicago.

Option 1: Continue on I-65 N until it merges into I-90 and then continue on I-90 W (the Northwest tollway), pass O'Hare and then take my exit for Schaumburg.

Option 2: Avoid I-90 as passing through downtown, it could be having heavy traffic. Instead to turn into I-80/94 W just short of point where I-65 mergrs into I-90. Then get into I-294 N, and finally into I-355/290 N and take my Schaumburg exit from there. The directions also show me that if I take this route, there is a possibility of delay due to a construction from US-12 to Indiana State line (doesn't tells me what direction of the highway the construction is on).

Distance-wise both options are same. If someone who frequently uses these routes around Chicago could give practical advise on what route would be best to take from time/traffic perspective considering the day.

  • How does car-pooling works?

I've never done car-pooling before. But here is this situation in which I need to car-pool with a co-student in an executive program to visit a place 40 mins drive from our usual meeting place (this is in connection with our program of study). How should I go about it ... do we share gas cost, parking cost, ... ? This will be a one-time affair.

I may add here that I do not know this person outside the classes that we attend together, however here in US we are both from same country.
