Which is more energy efficient? A programmable thermostat OR leaving furnace set at certain temp?
I was considering getting a programmable thermostat but the guy that serviced my furnace said I'd be better off leaving the furnace set at the lowest comfortable temp I could tolerate all the time rather than using a programmable thermostat. He said you're using more energy turning the temp up and down frequently during the course of the day than you would just leaving it at a certain temp all the time. So which is it?

I got some stuff out of the freezer last night for dinner and somehow forgot to close the freezer door. I found it open this morning so I estimate it's been open about 8 hours or so. Is there a rule of thumb to use on how to determine if stuff's safe to eat or not?
