Should 13 yo Daniel Hauser be forced to undergo chemotherapy for his Hodgkin's lymphoma?
Google 'Daniel Hauser lymphoma' if you want to find out more about the case. In a nutshell, a 13 yo boy and his parents are refusing more chemotherapy for him after he underwent one round. Instead they are pursuing 'natural methods' of treatment. The cancer reportedly responded very well to that round of chemo, but Daniel also experienced very bad side effects. A judge in Minnesota ruled that he *has* to undergo treatment--refusing it would be considered parental neglect and the state would ultimately remove him from the care of his family.
Is this the right thing to do? I'm not asking about the pros and cons of treatment--I have a pretty good handle on those already. I want to hear about the medical ethics of forcing care on a child and the ramifications on the kid's future.
8 AnswersMedicine1 decade agoWhat does McCain have to do to salvage the ground he has lost?
Senator McCain's stunt with putting his campaign on hold for the economic crisis has backfired on him after the bailout plan was killed in Congress (largely by the Republicans that McCain was supposed to have been pulling together). Although the selection of Governor Palin as his running-mate initially gave his campaign a boost, after the Katie Couric interview on CBS in which she did not appear to have a solid grasp of key issues, that choice is now starting to look a bit unwise. The latest polls have shown him losing ground since only a week ago. What has to happen for Sen. McCain to regain this lost ground and perhaps even put up a lead on Sen. Obama?
15 AnswersElections1 decade agoHas anyone had difficulty putting a Foley into a guy on cocaine?
Young male adult, coked up big time. It felt like it was stopping at his prostate. Does cocaine cause prostatic enlargement (either acutely or chronically)? Guy eventually peed on his own several hours later, but he had to really work at it.
1 AnswerMedicine1 decade agoShould the Bush tax cuts be allowed to expire?
I'm not getting any responses in Economics, so I thought I'd post this in the Politics section too.
There's a lot of political rhetoric being tossed around about the Democrats' 'tax and spend' policies. Some Democrats are admitting that they would increase taxes in order to spend more. While Bush wants to keep his tax cuts, he has demonstrated little to no restraint when it comes to spending--the result being an annual deficit of $300-400 billion. Bush argues that the tax cuts help the economy which results in larger tax receipts which will ultimately reduce the deficit. However, no one ever seems to address the direct effect the budget deficit has on the economy. It's been many years since I last studied macroeconomics, but I seem to recall a strong correlation between capital investment and economic growth.

There's a lot of political rhetoric being tossed around about the Democrats' 'tax and spend' policies. Some Democrats are admitting that they would increase taxes in order to spend more. While Bush wants to keep his tax cuts, he has demonstrated little to no restraint when it comes to spending--the result being a significant annual deficit (currently $300-400 billion). Bush argues that the tax cuts help the economy which results in larger tax receipts. While there is definitely truth in that, no one ever seems to address the effect the budget deficit has on the economy. It's been many years since I last studied macroeconomics, but I seem to recall a strong correlation between capital investment and economic growth. It happened post-WWII and again during Clinton's term. Clinton's term saw the highest rate of capital investment as a percentage of GDP since the 40s-50s and that was followed by the highest rate of economic growth in our history.
3 AnswersEconomics1 decade agoHow do I determine what cells are secreting a soluble substance within a tissue?
Suppose you have a tumor, and you know the tumor is enriched for a particular soluble factor--how do you figure out which cells are secreting the soluble factor? I don't need detailed instructions, just tell me what method to use and I can look up the rest. My background is all in vitro biochemistry, so I'm a bit out of my element here with living cells.
2 AnswersBiology1 decade agoCan I move a RAID-1 logical disk from one Windows XP installation to another?
During a flight of frustration, I rashly re-installed a fresh copy of Windows XP without any preparation (I did a 'new installation' instead of the 'upgrade' installation--which is what I should have done). I already posted a question about how I can get back into the user account directory for my old account (still hoping for a positive answer). My more serious problem however, is that the RAID-1 array I had is no longer recognized as a formatted disk. It is present as one logical disk, but the Windows disk manager says it is unallocated (unpartitioned). Repartitioning and reformatting is out of the question because I have data on there that is irreplaceable. I don't understand why Windows doesn't recognize it since I didn't do anything to it. Any ideas about what I can do?
2 AnswersOther - Computers1 decade agoIs there any way to recover files from another Windows XP account?
I was having a problem with Windows and got so pissed off that, without thinking, I immediately re-installed it from the CD. Problem now is that I can't access my old data files. Any ideas on how to get to those files?
