  • What is the "safe" video resolution to cover most devices?

A friend is creating a video project for her boss, and the rendering is supposed to be playable on most common devices: PCs/Macs, smartphones, iPad/iTouch, etc.

What should she set as the rendering resolution? If she renders it as 1080p, will a device that at most supports 720p be able to play it?

Also, what format would cover most devices? I think that going .mp4 is safe.

    Thank you very much.

  • "STB Check Card" Charges?

I just checked my SunTrust online banking account, and saw this charge: "STB Check Card 10-29-11 03:13" for $10. I've never received it before, and I've used my card online previously. What is that all about?

  • Get a GTX580 or wait for Kepler?

I've bought a GTX580 a few days ago. It's a great card, and does well, but it cost around $500, and it in't exactly brand new at this point (with it being released last year). I'm considering returning it in a few days and just sticking to my GTX285 until the Kepler cards come out, whose high-end card will probably cost around $500. Should I do that and just wait for Kepler? The only games I'm interested in this year are Skyrim and Battlefield 3, both coming out significantly later this year. And I want my card to last for a few years, and I guess until those games come out, the GTX580 is just doing the job that my 285 could be doing all along. So, should I wait until Q4 2011-Q1 2012 for Kepler?

Because, ideally, I'd want to max out those games on release, and enjoy any DX11/Tessellation features they may have. A GTX580 can do that. But for the games that would follow after, and with the promise that Kepler has, I keep thinking that, for that price, I should just wait a few months to get it, instead.

My original thought was to get a 580, wait some time, and maybe SLI with another 580 when the price drops to $300, or less.

    Thank you.

  • What is a truly reliable external hard drive company?

Today I bought the WD Elements 2TB External hard drive, and upon arrival home I discovered that it didn't work, at all. (I plugged it into the power source and then connected it to my PC via USB, but my PC didn't recognize it at all, as if I didn't even connect anything (I checked device manager and several other areas to see if it was recognized, and nowhere did I see it even being mentioned.)) I tried connecting it to another PC and then to a Mac, and neither recognized it. Not even my PS3.

Basically, I will have to trade it in tomorrow and either get an identical one or get a new brand. This one was cheap ($109 for 2TB), which is why I got it. After the problems, I looked up reviews and a many people had similar problems, and some had the same symptoms come up a few months after the purchase.

So should I risk it, get the same one, or should I get a different, more reliable brand? Which brand would be in the similar range of 100ish dollars for a relatively similar volume?

  • Larger size of this Pirate/Ship image?

I'd like a better size of this image: http://i.ytimg.com/vi/GB65Ol-FasU/0.jpg

I can't seem to find anything about it, like the author or the title. Any help in identifying it would be greatly appreciated.

  • TV has to heat up to work?

(This happened a year ago, and I'm trying to investigate again).

When I turn on my Polaroid 2611 tlxb LCD TV, it first shows me a gray screen, and then slowly different areas of the screen change colors. If there is no input to the TV, then it all tries to get to Blue, and if there is an input, then straight lines of different colors form, but the "light" behind the lines is a bit brighter/darker from area to area.

After a bit of color changing, the TV just displays a constant line-image that was created and sits there for some time. Then, maybe 20-30 minutes after, it suddenly starts showing the correct image, as if it had to heat up to do it. From that point on, it seems to work until I turn it off. If I turn it off and turn it back on within a few seconds, it still works, as if it's warm enough. If I wait a few hours, then it does not, and I have to go through the process again.

The sound still works in the background as all this is happening. Any idea as to what the problem is?

On a side note: This happened to the TV exactly a year and a week from the purchase date, aka, a week after the Warranty wore off. And, of course, the terrible customer service of Polaroid had nothing to say. I'd advise you to stay away from this brand.

  • Could I potentially sue this dentist?

I had a root canal done about in around 2007 (I was about 15-16) by a dentist. Since then, I've been having minor problems with the tooth (ranging from sensitivity to temperature, to small pain.) It has escalated to my gun above the tooth hurting whenever applied pressure to, and two days ago the gums on the side of the tooth have swelled, and so has my cheek. I went to a different dentist today, and they had to redo my root canal, and they asked me many times who the other dentist was and where he works. At the end, it turned out that my tooth had 4 roots, and he has only treated 3, which led to an infection in the 4th. Because we had to redo the root canal, we had to pay close to $700 (and the $700 to the first dentist for the first time). Do you think that we might have a case here to at least get back the money that we spent on the first root canal?

  • How do you say this phrase in Spanish?

The phrase: " Stay seated until the bell rings."

I want it to be grammatically correct, and it should be something that you'd say to someone in the Americas, not Europe. Thank you.

  • Phi Kappa Phi awards breakfast?

I just received a letter from my state's chapter of the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi which congratulates me on being the highest-ranked junior (GPA-wise) in my high school. I am basically invited to be a quest at an awards breakfast/recognition ceremony.

I'm not exactly sure what this means to me, though. Like, this is just a recognition, and I'm not invited to be a member of the organization, right? I tried researching Phi Kappa Phi, and as far as I understand, it's an organization that's targeted at university students, not high school students.

Basically, my question is: what exactly does this invitation mean?

  • Seeing Red/Blue Outlines with regular glasses?

Seeing Red/Blue Outlines with regular glasses?

I have regular Versace eye-glasses for correcting shortsightedness and astigmatism. What I noticed is that when I look at objects that are left of me (ss in, I have to turn my eyes to pretty much the edge of my glasses), those objects will have a blue outline on the left side and a red outline on the right side. If I turn my head so that the object is now to the right of me, the outlines switch colors to where now the right side is blue and the left side is red. Also, if I look at my hand like I would at the objects, instead of a red outline I now see a yellow one. I believe I also saw a green outline at some point; however, the dominant outlines are red and blue.

I was just curious what's causing this, and if others are having the same experience.

  • DOes anyone keep track of a link between an HP Win Vista PC and its Win 7 upgrade CD Keys?

As in, if I used the HP program to get the Win 7 upgrade and got the CD with Vista to 7 upgrade files plus a CD key, could I use that CD key on another PC that will run Win 7? Will that conflict in any way with the PC with Vista whose proof of purchase was used to get the Win 7?

  • Is the CD key to Windows Upgrade simply a CD key I'd get by buying Windows standalone?

I got Windows Vista Home Premium to Windows 7Home Premium upgrade package. The disk comes with a CD key (Product key). If I was to get the Windows 7 Home Premium disk, could I use this CD key to install it without any legal/compatibility problems?

If the above isn't clear enough, could I basically use the CD key from an Upgrade version to install the OS cleanly from scratch with a retail CD?

  • Can the HP's offer of Win Vista to Win 7 be used on a different Win XP?

Just curious. We bought our PC packed with Win Vista and were eligible for the upgrade. Today we got the upgrade disk, which comes with a CD key different from that of the Vista computer. I was just curious, could this upgrade disk be used on a different PC, which runs on Windows XP? If so, will that conflict with the Vista version at all?

  • Does tempearute increase twice as fast with 2 heat sources?

If you had two heat sources, and you made them both come in contact with an object, would the temperature of that object increase at twice the speed, increase at the same speed as with one heating object, or increase in a different speed when compared to the other two?

Both heating objects are at exactly the same temperature.

  • Ruling in United States v. Darby?

I need the numerical ruling. I know that it was unanimous against Darby, but what was the actual number of voters? Like, 8 to 0? Or 7 to 0? I can't seem to find this anywhere. Thanks in advance, and please provide where you found the answer.

  • Should I submit my SAT scores before seeing them?

The College Board website offers to send my SAT scores to 4 colleges for free. While this sounds like a good idea, I have to pick my colleges and agree to send them no longer than 1 week after I take the SAT. Since it takes longer than a week to get my scores back, should I still use the opportunity and send them, or should I just wait until I get my scores back and until I can see if I did well, and THEN send them, even though for a fee?

Also, if I did bad, which I doubt... but if I did bad on the SAT, and the scores will be sent, will the colleges really care much? I'll likely retake the test next year, anyway. Will they completely ignore these scores and look at those, if those are higher?

    Thanks.

  • If there's ever a war draft, do they look at your grades before drafting you?

Just a random question. I'm currently ranked as number 1 in my grade level (11th grade) at my high school, and my GPA is 102.95, as I take all the honors and AP classes available to me. I was wondering, if there's ever a draft, does the draft board review your file? As in, does it look at your grades and perhaps see that the U.S. would benefit from your intellectual skills far more than from your actual physical skills in the battlefield? Would it then perhaps not draft you directly into combat, but instead work with you on getting you into a different position? Thanks.
