  • Can someone explain exactly how winning a major race such as the Vuelta a España works?

I understand that the times of each rider over a certain amount of stages are added together for a total, but apart from announcing individual names as riders finish I always hear commentators state what team they're from (be it Leopard Trek, Liquigas, HTC High Road, you name it). What is the significance of their team? Is there a winning category for teams as well as individuals?

  • Winning GC without ever winning a stage?

The wikipedia article concerning general classification in cycling races states: "Note that it is possible to win the GC without winning even one stage of a multi-stage race. It is even possible to win the GC of the race without being the GC leader on any stage before the last stage of the race." Is this true? If so, can someone explain how?

  • Barnes and Noble NOOKcolor?

Does the new nookcolor by B&N use the same eInk technology that the previous one did, making it just like the page of a book? Or has it instead switched to more of a backlit display?

  • Skiing Mont Tremblant, how is it?

Going to Mont Tremblant for the first time this February, need to know what to expect in terms of crowds, typical snow conditions, usual temperatures, etc. Although I'm fully aware that I'm not an expert skier, my skiing level allows me to handle what American ski resorts consider to be "expert" runs. I enjoy skiing fast and challenging myself with steeper runs. Does it offer trails that can accommodate this? Also how long is the run from the highest lift-serviced trail to the bottom of the mountain?

    Thanks

*Not much into terrain parks but if they have one that'd be a plus

  • Need help finding the names of these movies!?

Movie A) Guy's girlfriend dies so he builds a time machine and keeps going back to the moments b4 she died to attempt to save her, but she dies every time somehow. He then goes to many different moments in time, starting with ancient times and leading up to the far future, when the world is almost primitive again.

Movie B) A bunch of people build a time machine and travel back to ancient France where they find wars going on and it is really awesome.

Movie C) Girl jumps off a bridge, and lands in a certain spot. By landing in that spot, she is transported back to medieval times and stays for a while, b4 returning home and then coming back cause she liked it better.

  • I fricken wanna ski race! (GS)?

Okay here's the deal. I've been skiing for awhile and I've noticed that

    a) I love to go fast. I find myself trying to accelerate to my fullest potential on almost every run (in control of course).

    b) Skiing is a sport that I would be seriously committed to if I started to race.

Problem: I don't live near a mountain. However, I have noticed one or two kids in my school that have once been racers, and asked them about it. They say every weekend they commuted to the nearest mountain, and practiced and raced. That's about all they told me. I want to start racing. So badly. Who do I talk to? How do I get myself involved? Any racers, please answer. Thanks!

  • The science/tech behind skiing?

Lately I've been thinking (and when I say lately I mean like in the shower 10 minutes ago) about the science and technology behind skiing. I realized that I don't really understand much about how a ski is built and what makes it so effective. What effect do the length and weight of skis have on your skiing? The sidecut radius? The sharpness of the edge? How is the responsiveness of a ski determined? Any info would help. Thanks.

  • Any heli skiers out there? Help?

So basically I'm sick of this island and I need to go up north and do some heli skiing. Like...now...and when I say now, I mean soon. And when I say soon, I mean hopefully soon (if the skiing gods love me enough). So if anybody has ever gone and can give me ANY info like what company to choose, where to go, price, experience, stories, etc. that would be sweet. I like moderately steep to very steep slopes, if that matters towards whatever info you may have. Thx.

  • Help With Freestyle Skiing?

Lately, I've become much more interested in freestyle skiing than ever before; specifically in the terrain park (tables, step-downs and step-ups, gaps, hips, spines, rails, etc). Many of the tricks require a ridiculous amount of aerial skill and technique. Where/What is the best place/way to learn what I need to in order to perform these tricks? Should I buy a trampoline...go to a gym with a foam pit? Any freestyle skiers...how did you learn?

btw some people recommended camps like Windell's. Any1 done that?

  • Skier, need help convincing my parents to move.?

Alright so basically I'm a skier and I live in a boring suburb in southeastern N.Y. It barely snows here, and there are no ski resorts near my house. The closest major resorts are Loon Mtn. in New Hampshire or Mt. Snow in Vermont. I love skiing as much as the next guy/girl...maybe more. For so long I have been trying to convince my parents to move and, obviously, they have been relatively unresponsive. I need better arguments to support moving (primarily emphasizing the awesomeness of skiing and its benefits). Any suggestions? Thanks - help a fellow skier out.

  • Why are so many freestyle skiers abandoning their poles?

Every time I hit the terrain parks (such as yesterday at Mt. Snow) I see less and less skiers using poles. Why is this? Is there a benefit to it?
