  • Is there a term for this journalistic ambiguity?

Often you will hear stories in which injuries are clumped together in such a way as to make serious injuries seem much more common than they are. Here is a made-up, slightly exaggerated example:

47% of students in the South report that they have been violently assaulted, bullied or teased.

Sounds like a very dire situation, but if one looks at the data:

    Violent assault - 0.1%

    Bullied - 4%

    Teased - 43%

So while the numbers are true, they are, at the same time, somewhat misleading. Does this fallacy have a name?

  • International Call Timing App?

I am going through a list of 105 colleagues who live all over the world (Phillipines, Korea, South America etc).

My task is to group them into groups of a dozen by time zones to provide a mix of various countries in each group but not make anyone have to call in too late or too early. I'm using excel, looking up each time zone by UTC + or - XX:XX, an color coding the country cells to do it manually. Do you happen to know if there is a free software program or excel trick to make this any easier?

  • Is there a site that I can use to collect contact and information?

Is there a site I can use to collect information from partners? I would provide them a link which they could use to provide the following details. Then I could export into a CSV or similar file.

    Company Name

Desired Products (this would be check-boxs)

    Contact name

    Contact email

    Contact address

    Contact phone

  • My daughter did not call the police?

    Are we in trouble?

My daughter was rear-ended. She was not hurt and her 12 year-old car suffered only very minor damage. The woman who hit her was nice/scared/apologetic. They exchanged licenses and insurance cards. My daughter thought this was trivial, did not call the police, and does not plan on taking any action in this matter.

My question is, could the woman who hit her come after my daughter in any way? I realize it is extremely unlikely, but...

  • Label for meat and egg products that claims the animals have not been fed GM feed?

Am I missing something here? So we are trying to avoid eating animals who have digested and incorporated amino-acids from proteins in their feed that are from organisms other than whatever grain the livestock are being fed.

Cows in the field eat proteins from hundreds (thousands?) of different organisms...from amoebas to bugs to myriad bacteria...right along with the various plants we think of as their diet. Why is no one worried about this dietary diversity but are worried about a single non-native protein in the feed??

The "new" genes in GM foods are millions of years old. These are not artificial genes...they just come from another organism. I can sort of, kind of (not really) understand how folks might be wary of eating proteins from another organism. But wariness of eating animals that have eaten proteins from another organism seems strange. Can someone help me with this??

  • Is this solar bobblehead a capacitor?

Below is a link to a video of a solar bobblehead. This toy was sitting in weak sunlight. It seemed to be collecting enough energy to overcome inertia, but not to maintain motion. Would this be an example of a simple capacitor?

  • Is there a website where one can share what it is like to work for a certain company?

My son is currently being interviewed by Reliable Life Insurance, and I am curious what people's experience have been who have worked there. Googling has not been very helpful. Is there a site which employees can go and talk about their experiences with companies?

  • Why is the Galaxy battery 1500mA on Ebay?

I just recently bought a Galaxy S (not S2) from T-mobile. It came with a 1650mA battery. I wanted to buy a backup battery from Ebay, and I noted ALL the Galaxy S batteries are 1500mA. (The S2 batteries are 1650). I am a bit confused as to why the Ebay batteries aren't also 1650mA like the one that came with my phone.

  • Do different Sony car radio face-plates fit in the same slot?

I had my radio faceplate (Sony CDX-GT310) stolen from my car. I see a cheap similar plate (Sony CDX-CA400) on Ebay. Do all Sony faceplates fit into each others slots? If not, is there some way I can find a list of compatible faceplates?
