Suggest a book for the bookworm?
I'm looking for something new for now.
I'm a fantasy reader. Any fantasy really.
I'm looking for something new.
Not just the same old whatever is popular right now.
How about a taste of what I've got:
Jim Butcher
Terry Brooks
Terry Pratchett
Artemis Fowl, Percy Jackson, Harry Potter.
I've read Twilight, I don't love it, but I don't loathe it... it just is, I'm not going to waste energy on a strong opinion.
A fair number of Vampire based urban fantasy
The Night Angel by Brent Weeks, I'm waiting for others from him.
The Nightside by Simon R. Green
So dig in and give me something to sink my teeth into. What's your favorite story? Share it with me please.
High Fantasy, Steampunk, Urban fantasy.
Give me a kid with a magic sword, or a telepath with a ray gun on an adventure. Maybe a failed prince. Or a private detective. How about a wizard searching for his confidence.
I'm in a funk and nothing I have is catching my eye, and I can't pick anything out at the store because I haven't got three hours to dig for treasure in the stacks.
8 AnswersBooks & Authors8 years agoBoard games for adults?
My friends and I are starting a game night. I'm looking for suggestions for games. Any games really. We're 23-30ish. The plan is to get together after work with food and drink and silly games.
So far we have:
Monopoly (being the inaugural game, where I beat them and made 17K Monopoly dollars)
Clue
Settlers of Catan
Munchkin
Life
Apples to Apples
We're thinking anything goes. Traditional board games, geeky games, long games, short games.
So, what's your favorite game?
5 AnswersBoard Games9 years agoIn Search for Fairy Tale Everyday Clothes?
I'm starting a search and having a bit of a hard time finding clothing like this:
http://images5.fanpop.com/image/photos/29000000/1x...
Yes, that is from Once Upon a Time.
I'm trying to put together a new wardrobe.
I want to see if I can find things similar to that to wear everyday. And I'm a Gal So I'll call it Fairy Tale Tomboy. Or... Wizard not quite blending in with the Muggles.
Cool shirts, nice slacks, vests and jackets that are awesome, elaborate and not that random 'this will do' that I could get at the mall. Sort of Fairy tale-ish. Some things like the adults in the Harry Potter films wear.
I'm very interested in Online shops right now.
I realize that I will likely have to get sewing patterns and make things myself.... But I'm not ready to change my wardrobe over yet and I thought I'd ask to see if the Answers Community has any good leads for things I could buy ready made (Or even made to order like I could from an Etsy Shop)
1 AnswerFashion & Accessories9 years agoI need a place to find a name?
I need help naming a character.
Does anyone have some cool place to find names?
My character is a guy, my main character's best friend. He's from a fantasy world and he's young and easialy distracted.
I'm not looking for you to give me a name, just maybe point me in a neat direction.
(I've done baby name lists and I have a fantasy RPG name generator that I'm not getting anything that sounds right from.)
3 AnswersBooks & Authors10 years agotake a job for not enough money?
I've got a sort of job offer. I'm not sure if I should take it.
The salary is a couple thousand a year below what I think I need. And they say that it is really not flexible. This is all they have in the budget to pay for the job.
The place is halfway across the US... being far from family and other people I know.
I got bit last time I moved for a job, apartments I could find online were crap and I ended up paying $300 more a month than I had estimated when I got that offer. Meaning I've done living without actually making enough money. I only survived it because I had an emergency fund that is significantly smaller this time around.
I'm afraid if I take this offer I'll be in the same boat. Further from my family.
And that it'll put me so far in a hole I'll never make it back out.
4 AnswersOther - Careers & Employment10 years agoShould I scrap my story and start over completely?
I do Nanowrimo. I've got a story started that I like that I didn't finish a few years ago.
Should I scrap everything I have written and start over with my outline and characters and everything else....
...or...
Should I use what I have and add on to get the story finished before I go through and polish the whole thing up??
5 AnswersBooks & Authors1 decade agohow do you do salary research for a non-mainstream job?
I'm looking for a new job and trying to research how much I can expect to make in places where I find jobs before I get to the point where employers would ask me what I want.
But.
My job isn't easy to find. I'm signed up for a job site specifically for my industry because when I put any combination of job titles I could have into big search things like monster I get so many results that are nothing like what I'm looking for.
The same thing goes with salary searches. I can find things that are similar, but they seem a bit off. Jobs that are usually higher up the food chain come back saying that they make less than jobs of people they're in charge of. It's weird. The lower on the totem pole jobs say they make what I expect the higher jobs should make.
Should I estimate about what I want based entirely on cost of living?
is it maybe a good idea to try to estimate with the salary info I can find?
1 AnswerOther - Careers & Employment1 decade agoApartment laundry hogs?
I live in an apartment with a laundry room that has four each of washers and dryers.
Every single time I go to do my laundry there are women there using all of the machines. They usually have like 5 baskets left to do. This is insane. I can't get even one machine away.
To add to my frustration, I don't speak Spanish, and live in a largely Hispanic area. So I can't ask them to let me have one machine.
Is there something I can do so they stop hogging the whole laundry room?
I swear there's one of these women for each day of the week.

I'm trying to find something free but I'm having a hard time.
1 AnswerMedia & Journalism1 decade agoIntroducing a new cat to a small apartment?
I'm getting a new cat. I haven't picked it out yet. I'm going to my local SPCA next weekend.
I've had cats most of my life but I've never introduced one to a small apartment. I know the idea of keeping the kitty in one room and letting them get used to that one room before the rest of the house.... but I've only got two rooms... Do you think it would be all right to let the kitty get used to the whole place at once?
3 AnswersCats1 decade agoget red dye out of a colored sweater?
I've got a red, black and white sweater. It's color fast, been through the was a lot and the colors have never bled. I washed it with a new red thing and now the white stripes are pink. What can I use to get the red off of the white stripes without doing anything bad to the actual colors of the sweater?
2 AnswersCleaning & Laundry1 decade agoStop beaded bracelet ends from slipping out?
I've made several beaded bracelets. They're all getting longer... I think the ends of my wire are slipping out of the crimp beads. I wear them all the time (Have to, they're interchangeable parts for a medical ID bracelet, it's a wonderful excuse to bead)
Is there a better way to finish my bracelets so the ends don't slip?
Oh, I've got one of those crimp bead tools that bends the beads in the middle then in half:

1 AnswerLaptops & Notebooks1 decade agoLavender to prevent fleas?
I recently moved into a new (for me) apartment And I'm pretty sure it's got fleas, I plan on treating the carpet and fabrics to get rid of them.
But what about after that?
I've been reading that Lavender keeps fleas away. Is it true? would it be a good Idea to keep lavender sachets around to keep fleas away?
2 AnswersOther - Home & Garden1 decade agoHow do I join an RPG Group?
I've recently moved and I'm looking to meet people.
I want to see about joining an RPG group, D&D or something of the like.
How do I find a group who is willing to play with a total noob? I was a deprived child and never got to play these games that sounded like way too much fun. OK, maybe not a total noob, I play Munchkin like a madwoman, but that is quick and dirty and FUN.
3 AnswersOther - Games & Recreation1 decade agoIs Air Conditioning too much to ask for?
I'm looking for an apartment in the Monterey CA. I'm having the hardest time finding places with air conditioning. Like I've found one. Is it too much to ask for in a one bedroom or studio apartment there, or is it so common that they don't bother putting it in the ads?
4 AnswersRenting & Real Estate1 decade agoHow do I get my music onto the computer from my iPod?
My computer just crashed wonderfully and I just got everything back up and running. I've just re-downloaded iTunes and sent it out to see what music it could find on my hard drive. It found all my music, but was unable to recover how it's organized. Is there a way I can just import it all from my iPod which still had all my organization on it?
I've found a few places that tell me to change the iPod to be used as disk storage, but that would mean that all was fine and dandy on my computer, right?
If I set it to manually sync would that help me in any way?
2 AnswersSoftware1 decade agoWhat can I do about my high domed cake?
I'm making a 13x9inch cake. I want to frost it and decorate it just cause. But first, I wanted to put raspberry filling in it. I planned on cutting the cake for the filling and not do two layers in separate pans since I'm transporting it in a short cake case. But it rose a lot in the middle. It's about half as tall on the edges as the middle.
I can't decide if I should try to go with it as is, or make another one for the top layer and cut this one down significantly to make the bottom layer.
2 AnswersCooking & Recipes1 decade agoWhat do you think of news anchors moving to another station?
News people, especially the younger ones, are always moving around. A few years in Podunk, Nowhere then a move up to some actual city and on and on.
But occasionally someone will move in their market. They'll stay in the same town on a different station where maybe they get a better position or more money.
Have you ever seen this? What do you think of it?
4 AnswersMedia & Journalism1 decade agoHow can I deal with a horrible coworker?
We got a new computerized system to do what we do at work last July. I work with a guy who has been there for more than a decade and he doesn't work well with computers. He hasn't bothered to learn any more than absolutely necessary. We have daily deadlines that he can't meet. Every day I have to rely on him to get something done on time so I can do my job and he can't. But he still insists that he's God's gift to the job and the best we have. His ego gets there a few hours before him. It's getting to me because I actually bothered to learn how everything works.
I told our supervisor that he's not doing his job and how it effects me. Months ago. And they had a talk. And nothing has changed. In fact, it's getting worse.
I don't know where to go from here.
