  • Faulty HP Laptop out of warranty?

My girlfriend and her sister both went to American and bought two of the best laptops they had. They were HP DV6-2144nr's and ran for 1200 each. They came with a one year warranty, and were bought 12/25/10.

Towards the end of the warranty (call it October or November) it started having battery issues, and running hot and such. It had to be plugged in all the time, otherwise the computer would randomly shut down on us. Both me and my girlfriend work and go to college, so we were always very busy and never got around to fixing it.

I finally had the time, and took her laptop apart, and cleaned out the fan and heat sink (which wasn't too dirty) upgraded the bios, and upgraded any other available drivers for it. This didn't do anything for the heat or the battery. At this point the warranty had just ended, and HP was no help whatsoever.

I figured Oh well, I would get a new battery, since that is something that can commonly go wrong with a computer. So before I get a new battery, the computer ran really slow one day. I restarted it now the hard drive is clicking and defective as well. I tried doing all the chkdsk /r, getting an adapter to go usb, and boot disks, with nothing. Since she had important information and pictures, I tried the freezing of the drive and bumping of it with no success. I tried pursuing this with HP, without any help, so I got an identical hard drive for it (Hitachi 320 gb). and reinstalled windows and such. Everything worked, but we lost all of our files.

Yesterday was the kicker. She had her laptop on, used it that day, and closed it. I went to use it, and there was a black screen. I restarted it, only to see black screen with caps/numb lock lights blinking in twos- meaning a corrupt bios. At this point we've got ourselves a useless pile. I called HP again and complained and they did nothing. The other laptop which her sister uses way more than ours hasn't had any problems and doesn't run hot. We do not abuse our computer whatsoever, and it still looks brand new.

At this point I am looking to get this fixed on HP's expense for a faulty product. Any information on/the pursuit of action would be appreciated. I looked into the Sales good act, and BBB, and I will probably write a letter to HP. What is the best course of action? Thanks in advance for your input

  • Would workman's compensation cover carpal tunnel in MI?

My girlfriend of 4 years has been working at a Holiday Inn hotel in Michigan for about a year or two now. She is 20 years has no insurance or benefits, and makes barely more than minimum wage. She started off as a housekeeper, then was primarily a bed maker, and now she is a housekeeping supervisor who does all of the above.

Recently her right wrist has been hurting severely, and she has been dropping things without knowingly loosing her grip. She wears a brace to work sometimes and to bed every night, which helps, but it continues to bother her throughout the day. Also I believe both her Mom and Dad had the carpal tunnel surgery

Her wrist pain started off minor, but progressively is getting worse. When she first realized it to affect her negatively, (about a month after minor pain) she told the manager about it. The manager said something to the effect of carpal tunnel is hard to prove it happened from work, because it happens over time. The manager also said she has no doubt that her job has something to do with the carpal tunnel, but basically brushed her off by saying it is a hard injury to prove and it needs to be documented as soon as it happens.

Today, my girlfriend told me she is starting to feel it in her left hand as well. This really bothers me because she is only 20 and i know her left arm is going to get worse. She does a lot of bed making (sometimes 50 beds a day) so it really takes a toll. I told her to let her manager know immediately about the left wrist now, in hopes that they will actually try to do something because it has been mentioned when it happened. They will probably try to get out of it some how.

I think the holiday inn she works at is privately owned or managed, and they own/ manage a comfort inn which is right next to the holiday inn as well. I think they are awfully stingy over there, because she started at $7.50 an hour to be the housekeeper, and when she was promoted up to the supervisor, they only went up yo $8.00 an hour. I guess that isn't horrible, but now she does all of the work she did before, plus she has to call people on her own time regarding work schedules, and do a bunch of other tedious work. The head housekeeper and the supervisor she replaced both made $9.50 an hour, and they both did/do less work than her. When she asked about the $9.50, the hotel said they aren't doing that great financially so they couldn't do it (even thought they were ranked the best hotel in the area and are always pretty busy).

Since she has been working there, they have been adding much more responsibilities, without any incentives or pay increase. They make all employee's get there 15 minutes early, which they don't get paid for, otherwise they get "written up". Once in the 2 years she worked there she was actually 5 minutes late, but she called and let them know. Once she got in they wrote her up.

I guess my main question would be is she able to get workman's comp for this? We aren't looking for handouts, but I don't want her to be in pain anymore. If it would cover just the surgery to fix it we would be more than happy. I don't think its right that over exertion from her job is affecting her free time, and especially for such little pay.

Thank you for your time and answers.

  • Dell Studio 1737 power adapter not recognized. not charging, Tried everything?

I have two dell 1737's with 64 bit vista. Both of them showed the bios adapter warning- "cannot determine power adapter type, please plug in again, blah blah.."

I looked into it, and bought two of those charger boards that include the two usb slots on ebay from the same guy. Put it in the first studio, and everything worked great. Battery charged, and I even took the battery out of the other studio and charged it with the working one. (thus confirming both batteries are in working order)

Tried putting the 2nd charger board into the second laptop, and nothing changed, still plugged in not charging. I used multiple adapters on the 2nd studio, which worked with the first one, and have the same output as the computer needs for input. (confirming the power adapters are fine).

I had the old a06 bios on there when it wouldn't charge, so i flashed up to the a09 with no luck.

I am just confused because it seems as if I have changed all of the common culprits for this problem, and my warranty ended in February of course. Any Ideas?

Since I've replaced the mini board, and the adapters and batter

  • How to fix a "rigged" up car horn?

I have a 97 Monte Carlo which I bought used. Some less than intelligent person wired up the horn to a doorbell switch, which he then mounted on the dashboard. Horn works when I push the button, but it is very sloppy looking and just unnecessary. There are two white cords running through the front of the dash, into the engine compartment. One cord looks like it is simply a ground, and I haven't followed the other one.

The horn does not work when I push the steering wheel down (obviously), because it is rerouted to that stupid doorbell. I know nothing of horns, but I would guess the relay isn't working? or maybe the wires for it aren't?

Either way, I would like to get this fixed, as it has been bothering me for awhile now. I just hope it isn't to difficult or expensive. Lastly, will the driver's airbag be a problem considering that's where the horn is pushed? Any help is greatly appreciated!

  • 97 Monte Carlo PO305 (cyl 5 misfire) and PO420 (Catalyst system efficiency below threshold)?

Hello, I have a 1997 Chevy Monte Carlo LS 3.1L. Recently it has been sluggish and non-responsive on the throttle. When scanned, I get a PO305 and PO420 code. Before I scanned, I changed out all the spark plugs with bosch platniums +2 (To find out they aren't very good afterwards via peoples opinions) and I changed the O2 sensor (Tightened with a cresent wrench, but should be in there good enough)

I'm just wondering if this is one of those problems that some mechanic has seen 100 times, and has a good idea of whats wrong. I've been trying to get it fixed, but don't want to drop too much money on something that may not even be needed.

What would be your approach to figuring it out? thanks!

  • Will I need a new HU, or amp to power JL speakers?

I've been slowly upgrading my '97 Monte Carlo's sound system by adding sub woofers, but now I'm looking for some clarity.

I currently have: (2) 12w1v2-4 ohm subs, JL sealed box, JL 500/1 slash series amp, unused 250/1 amp (replaced by 500/1), and walmart JVC KD-S36 head unit (i think it puts out 25w x 4 rms)

I have on order: JL TR690- TXi 6x9 coaxials for the rear, and JL VR525-CSi 5.25 components for the front.

From the research I've gathered, They will obviously be an improvement by replacing the stock speakers, and running power off the HU. The questions I have would be: how crucial is it to amplify the speakers? Will the head unit I have now be alright? Will I need to run new speaker wire? If I do get an amp for them would It go under my seat, or be connected to the 500/1? Where's the best spot for the tweeters and crossover? Basically anything I may need to know would be appreciated. Thanks!

  • JL audio 250/1 v1 amp with (2) 12w1v2-4 Amp settings? Need Help!?

Hey guys, I drive a 97 monte carlo with a JVC head unit (like 129.99 at walmart), stock speakers, 250/1 v1 amp, and two 12w1v2 4 ohm subs with a sealed box.

My settings probably arent the best, so I was wondering what you guys think the optimal settings would be, and for what application (Loud bass, High quality bass, or mix)

    The possible amp settings are:

Preamp output Selection Mode- (Full-range, Low Pass, or High Pass)

Amp Lp filter- mode/ slope (off, 12 db, or 24 db), and Filter Frequency (40 to 200 Hz)

Bass Control- Infrasonic filter (off, or 30 hz), and LF boost (0 to 15 Db)

Amplifier Input Section- Input wattage (low, or high) and signal sensing (off, or on)

The manual for the amp is at http://mobile.jlaudio.com/pdfs/Slash_amps/250_1_MA...

I looked it over, but honestly I don't know what half of it means. Also, with my setup, what would the "specs" be on it? Would it be 250w to each sub @ 4 ohm? or 125w to each? and how low can it go for ohms?

My head unit has some settings which I should probably tweak, Amp (high power or low power?) Loud on or off, bass level 1-6, bass .5-2 (hz?), and all that other crap. Any info you guys can give would be greatly appreciated, as I want to learn about car audio. Thanks in advance for your answers!

  • Do I need a bigger amp? 2 JL Audio 12w1's, JL 250/1?

I currently have 2 12' JL audio subwoofers 12w1's. I am powering them with one JL 250/1 mono amp.

I was thinking about getting a 500/1 amp or something, but I dont want to blow out the subs. Im basically wondering what the best wattage would be to feed the 12w1's.

  • 97 monte carlo transmission concerns?

So a while back I swapped trans fluid in my monte. First time I ever did it, so I was paranoid that I would overtighten the pan bolts when I was done, and it would leak. I took my time doing it, and went gentle with it. No leaks whatsoever, so I was all set.

So this morning my gf starts my car to let it warm up, and I take her to school. It was sluggish and slipping. I drove her like a mile to college and came back. For some stupid reason I thought the brake caliper was sticking because I smelled a strange odor after dropping her off. So when I got home I put it in reverse and gave it some gas (in hopes to pry the brakes loose), and it made a strange noise. I eventually found the dreaded red puddle on the passenger side of my driveway (which my gf didn't mention) so I immediately turned it off. I checked the fluid (cold to prevent further damage) and it was about halfway between the bottom, and the add fluid line. It was still the same color as new fluid.

I poured some trans fluid in, and looked underneath. Noticed it was the back of the pan. Pretty sure the cold weather made the gasket contract, and form a leak. Tonight I will take a torque wrench to all of the bolts and tighten to factory specs. Then ill fill with high mileage fluid and lucas oil transmission fix.

I'm. Just wondering if after filling it with new fluid and fixing the leak if there will be some guarenteed major problems, or if it should be fine. Obviously anything could happen, so I just want to know what usually happens. By the way its a 97 chevrolet monte carlo LS with a 3.1 L V6, and I believe a 4T60-E 4 speed automatic tranny. Thank you in advanced.

  • In Michigan, Can a Landlord enter your apartment without there being an emergency, or prior notice?

My landlord actually lives in Colorado, and my girlfriend and I live in Michigan. The landlords son lives 10 minutes away, so anytime we need a repair, he's the man. I've noticed over the period I've been renting this apartment, that they have kind of let themselves in a couple of times without letting me know first.

The first time I noticed was when I came home and some lady (who I've never seen or talked to before) was parked in my driveway and had my door open. Turns out she was my landlord's friends who came over randomly one day to change light fixtures in the bathroom.

Another time my girlfriend was talking to the landlords son, and he mentioned something to the affect of " I can go up there anytime I want". I don't think he meant it in a rude way, but still.

The most recent was the other day when the landlords son, and two furnace guys randomly came up and our house to inspect our vents. (this wasn't an emergency in any way)

I guess I shouldn't complain, because most of the time its to see about fixing something, but I just don't think they should be able to come up here without us having any knowledge of it.

Long story short I was just wondering what the laws in Michigan were. I don't know if im correct, but i remeber seeing somewhere that if they leave notice within 24 hours, they can come with permission or not, or if it is an emergency. I was also wondering what I would need to do legally if the situation gets worse. Thanks for your time!

  • Can cigarette smoke linger in fairly new heating ducts, and stink up an upstairs apartment?

I live in an upstairs apartment with my girlfriend, whom has a sensitive nose and acute asthma. Our apartment is basically a standard house split in two. The lady downstairs was a smoker, and smoked inside for awhile, even though she wasn't supposed to.

Everytime she started smoking, my girlfriend would get a horrible headache. After a long process of emailing the landlord, and talking to the downstairs tenant, she finally started smoking outside.

Everything was fine, until recently when the heat kicks on because it is near winter time. Now everytime the heat turns on, she gets a headache. I have smelled it myself, so its not just her. We asked the landlord if we could clean the vents and buy a new filter (at our expense), but she was nice enough to send a heating man over to check it out. According to the heating man, everything was fine because it was a newer furnace, but im not sure how accurate his "tests" were (but then again im not the expert). I guess they also went into our apartment (without prior notice and no one was home) and tried blaming it on my girlfriends candles. I really doubt thats the reason but whatever.

Basically, I'm just wondering what kind of tests may have been taken, and if there is anyway to fix the problem on our own. The landlord is playing the subtle "you guys are idiots" card, but she hasn't actually been there. Also, I would like to confirm that the cigarette smoke can go through the vents (pretty sure it can, considering we can smell whatever they are cooking downstairs).

My appologies for the long question, but thanks for your time and responses :)

  • Week 8 NFL Fantasy WR options?

I had put this question in the American football section, instead of fantasy sports.. sorry for the repost. Anyways....

I'm in a league where only like 3 people actually play, so my WR options are decent.. I always have a horrible time picking them tho... I have 3 spots to fill on the roster for WR. I currently have: T.O (CIN), Calvin Johnson (DET), Pierre Garcon (IND), Roy Williams (DAL), and Brandon Lloyd (DEN)...

I can get the following free agents with a click: Dwayne Bowe (KC), Dez Bryant (DAL), Devone Bess (MIA), Blair White (IND), and many more....

So what should I do? Im be needsin my points haha

(p.s put a number 1-10, on how sure/strongly you feel about your player, 10 being the highest)

    Thanks!

  • Orton or Rodgers for week 8 QB?

    Rodgers vs Jets

    Orton vs 49ers

Rodgers of course is the breadwinner, but Orton is at least a yeastwinner. Orton is probably gonna put on a show to make up for that disgusting loss against the raiders. What do you guys think?

Which Qb do you think I should start, and give me a 1-10 on how sure/strongly you feel about it (10 being the highest)

    Thanks!

Usually I go with the Aaron, but according to NFL website, Orton is projected for more. Both great QB's. what do you guys recommend? - Also pick a number on 1-10 on how sure/strongly you feel with 10 being the highest.

  • Is there something wrong with my gums?

I was recently sick with some sort of sore throat thing, but also had headaches and chills, and little pus pockets on my tonsils (gross). I have been taking vitamin C, Ibuprofen, and zinc. I also have a wisdom tooth that just poked through the gums. Anyways whenever I brush or floss, my gums bleed in multiple places. They feel swollen as well. I brush twice a day, floss once or twice, and mouthwash twice. It has never bled (other than on occasion), now its an every day thing. I don't have gum disease or anything do I?

  • Coolant Leaking from drain hose (1990 Cadillac Seville)?

My car has been overheating recently, and has been low on coolant. Today i started it up and looked for leaks. i didn't see anything, other than at the bottom driver side a small hose pointing down (pretty sure its the drain hose) is dripping at a moderate pace. Im wondering how to stop this leak. Is there some kind of plug? or is it too much pressure in the cooling system. any help is appreciated. thank you all
