Building gaming computer for first time. Need to know something about dual channel and triple channel?
Is it possible to put 6GB or 12GB of RAM on a dual channel motherboard? I'm on newegg and the 6GB sticks come with 3 while the 12GB of RAM comes in 3 or 6 sticks. I assume if I use 3 out of the 4 slots it won't work.
Also, I'm going with windows 7 home premium to save some money. I have heard some people say not to use it for a gaming PC, but I have been using it for a little over 2 years now and it's never given me any problems. The only downside I see to it is it can't go higher than 16GB (including the graphics card's memory). I was planning on doing 8GB of RAM with a 2GB GTX 660. I was thinking about 12GB of RAM, which would be a total of 14GB, and that would have left enough room left over for another 2GB graphics card if I ever felt like doing SLI.
It's not a huge deal. I know that 8GB is fine for gaming, I was just wondering.
1 AnswerDesktops8 years agoHorizontal flickering line on monitor?
So I'm playing Defiance and when my graphics card's temp reaches about mid 80's a 4 inch white line flickers on the top right of my monitor. It's strange because it will also sometimes disappear when the card is at about that temp. If I minimize the game and go back to my desktop it will stay there for a bit until the temp drops a little. It just started today, I was playing it last night and it was fine. I just hooked up this monitor again yesterday.
I bought a new ASUS monitor 2 weeks ago and RMA'd it yesterday because there was a slight fading issue, but I should have it back some time next week, so I'll know for sure if it's a monitor issue or not. If it was my graphics card wouldn't there be problems all over the screen instead of in the same spot?
My card is a 1GB GTX 460 from EVGA with a 10 year warranty (it's about 2 years old), and my monitor is a ViewSonic VA2012wb that's about 4 or 5 years old. I used to be at 1280 x 1024 but I just increased the resolution to its recommended 1680 x 1050, because I got used to being at that resolution on the new ASUS monitor. The 2 weeks that I was using the ASUS I had this one in the box that the ASUS came in and put that in the closet.
So, what do you guys think? Graphics card? Monitor?

3 AnswersPC8 years agoIs something wrong with my new monitor?
I just got a new ASUS VH238H LED monitor about a week ago and I have noticed that there is a difference in colors between the upper part of the monitor and the lower. It isn't noticeable with all colors but now that I know it's there so I'm always looking for it. The upper part of my screen has some colors appear darker than they are on the lower part of it. An example would be the gray bar on the top of something like My Documents. If I drag it to the bottom of the screen it becomes lighter than it is on top.
What is this? Can I RMA the monitor to ASUS and have them fix it for me? It's kind of annoying.
1 AnswerMonitors8 years agoCan I still get audio if I hook up my Xbox to my monitor with an HDMI to DVI cable?
My monitor has 1 VGA and 1 DVI port, so I can't use an HDMI cable. I'm currently using the VGA port for my graphics card. I know that DVI doesn't have audio but my monitor has a 3.5mm (I assume that's the size. I can plug my headphones into it.) audio out port. If I use
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N8...
and then connect speakers or even my headphones to the audio out port will I still get sound? I'm just wondering if the cable will mess with the sound since it's partly HDMI.
2 AnswersXbox8 years agoConnecting Xbox to PC monitor?
If I hook up my Xbox to my PC monitor with a HDMI to DVI cable will I still be able to get audio out of my monitor if I hook up speakers to the audio out port in it? I know it will work if I use this:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=74...
But that's the normal Xbox AV plug not an HDMI. This is the cord I want to use:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N8...
Also, I was wondering what would happen if I were to have my PC and Xbox on at the same time. Televisions have a TV/AV button to switch back n forth between watching TV and playing a game or watching a movie, but I'm not sure if my monitor can do that. It's an LCD monitor that's about 5 years old.
2 AnswersXbox8 years agoHooking up my Xbox to my PC monitor?
My Xbox is currently hooked up to my crt television. I don't like playing games on it because text appears off screen and it's difficult to read some of the stuff that's on screen. I've been looking into hooking up my Xbox into my PC monitor but I'm curious how it would work without an HDMI port on the monitor. I have 1 VGA and 1 DVI plug on my monitor. The VGA plug is currently being used by my graphics card. I know that microsoft sells a VGA cable but it's only 8 ft. long and I need about 15. I'm looking on newegg and I see some that are HDMI to DVI. I'm just wondering if I'll get audio with that as well. I read a comment that said there was no audio but he used it with his graphics card whereas I'll using it with my Xbox, not sure if it makes a difference. My monitor does have an audio plug that my headphones fit into.
Here's the one I'm looking at:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N8...
Also, does it mater that the plug is 24+1? I ask because I have a VGA to DVI adapter and it has 12 pins along with the flat one that I assume is the +1.
If it won't work is there anything you can recommend for me?
2 AnswersMonitors8 years agoPlease help with Financial Aid question?
I've been attending college for several years now, mostly part time because the classes I needed were usually full. Last semester I applied for financial aid for the first time. I thought I didn't qualify so I never applied before. I qualified for the full amount of the Pell Grant ($5,550). I received the first half ($2,775) last semester and I figured I would get the rest (or at least how much they would give me depending on how many units I'm taking) this semester. When I received my financial aid last semester I was taking 3 classes that totaled 12 units. This semester I was late to register and only got 2 classes that I need for a total of 7 units. I renewed my financial aid a couple of weeks ago and just checked it now and it says:
Based on your academic transcript, the status of your academic progress is Maximum Units Attempted in Spring 2013
What does this mean? Have I taken too many units to receive any more aid? I've only received it one time and that was just half of what I was awarded. I'm looking at my records and I have 82 attempted hours and 78 passed. Excluding the math class I dropped (which I took again and passed the next semester) I have passed every class I have taken with at least a B. My standing is Good and I don't owe any money.
4 AnswersFinancial Aid8 years agoBorderlands 2 season pass and the Mechromancer?
I just bought Borderlands 2 (PC) a couple of weeks ago and I wanted to know if the season pass includes the mechromancer. I tried looking online but the posts were from months ago when the game had just launched. I did see a couple of people say that it does include her. Is she offered in the season pass now?
1 AnswerPC8 years agoDead Space 3 and Origin?
Will Origin be required to play Dead Space 3? I want to pre-order it but I don't know if Origin is required. I know it's required to play Battlefield 3 and if the same is true for Dead Space 3 I'll just pick it up for Xbox.
1 AnswerVideo & Online Games8 years agoUninstalling Steam does things it shouldn't?
I bought a 2nd hard drive today to just for my games. I backed up the files of all my STeam games and was going to uninstall Steam then install it on the new hdd. When I unistalled it it also got rid of other stuff on my desktop. Ventrilo, Mumble, Diablo 3, etc. Things that had nothing to do with Steam. I restored the original hdd so it's all back now but I installed Steam onto the new hdd before I did this.
Why did it do that?
1 AnswerVideo & Online Games8 years agoCan I move Steam to a new hard drive?
I just installed a new hard drive where I plan to keep all my games. The games I didn't get on Steam are simple enough to move but I'm going to have to move Steam to this new hdd for those games, right? How should I do it? I searched my C drive for Steam and it came up with all kinds of stuff. Should I just drag and drop? I'm nervous that there may be something important that may have the word "steam" in it. I could uninstall Steam and install it in the new hdd, but I think I may lose all my games if I do it. I'm fine with downloading and playing them again, but I'd rather avoid it if I can.
What do you guys recommend?
2 AnswersVideo & Online Games8 years agoJust installed a Seagate Barracuda as a second hard drive. Now what?
I just installed a 1TB hdd as a secondary storage device for my games. I went into diskwizard and went into "add new disk", set it up as GPT and everything but it's not showing in My Computer. Prior to setting everything up I had gone into the BIOS and it was picking up a second drive.
If you need more information let me know.
4 AnswersAdd-ons8 years agoInstalling a second hard drive?
I just installed a 2nd hard drive to use for storing games on my computer. It's a 1TB Seagate Barracuda. I'm using Seagate DiskWizard and I'm in the initializing options. It's asking me if i want to initialize the disc in MBR or GPT layout. Which do I pick?
I'm running Windows 7 64-bit. I'm not sure if that's relevant or not.
3 AnswersOther - Hardware8 years agoInstalling a second hard drive?
I want to install a second hard drive into my computer and I was wondering about the power supply. I have a Corsair 650w PSU and it has two cables with SATA plugs. Both cables have 3 or 4 SATA plugs and I'm wondering if it's alright to connect two or more devices to one cable. At the moment I have one cable plugged in to my CD drive and the second is plugged in to my hard drive.
I assume it's alright but I want to be sure. I plan to have my CD drive and new hard drive plugged in to the same cable.
3 AnswersOther - Hardware8 years agoCan I play Planetside 2 with this RAM?
I want to get Planetside 2 but I'm not sure how it will work on my computer. My graphics card and processor are more than enough to handle it but I have 4GB of RAM (3.87 usable). The game requires a minimum of 4GB.
Is 3.87 good enough? How will it run? Will it be laggy?
5 AnswersPC8 years agoWill this RAM work for my computer?
I already asked a very similar question but now I have a little more information to add.
So this is the RAM I want:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N8...
My last question was about chipset compatibility. I have the Intel H57 chipset in my computer and the last set I was looking at didn't say it was compatible with what I have, so I figured they wouldn't work. These sticks say they are compatible with the LGA 1156 socket type. My computer has an i5-650 processor which does use that socket type.
The last memory sticks I saw said they were compatible with chipsets and these say they are compatible with socket types. I'm just wondering if my computer's chipset will matter if they match the socket type. So, will these memory sticks work on my computer?
If you guys want to know what the last set I looked at was then here it is:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N8...
I play games on my computer but I don't OC it so I don't care about heat spreaders. I will check the answers regularly so if you need any other information let me know and I will respond.
2 AnswersDesktops8 years agoWill this RAM work on my computer?
I currently have 4GB of RAM on my computer but I want to upgrade to 8GB. Here is what I found on newegg:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=20...
It matches my computer in every way but when I scrolled down to "Features" it lists the chipsets that these sticks are compatible with and that's where I have the problem. I have the Intel H57 chipset in my computer and it's not listed there. When I look at other memory sticks, like this one:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N8...
They don't say they are compatible with specific chipsets. So will the G.Skill memory sticks I want not work on my computer? Why don't other memory sticks say they are only compatible with a specific chipset? Will the memory sticks only work with the chipsets listed or is the list more of a "these sticks are also compatible with these chipsets"?
Finally, what does the PC3 10600 mean? I know my computer can use 1333Mhz memory sticks but I don't know what the number next to it means. I also see 10660 and 10666.
3 AnswersDesktops8 years agoOrigin/EA and spyware?
I don't have Origin installed on my computer but I did download Dead Space 1 & 2 off of Steam. When I tried to play Dead Space 2 I needed to login to play online. It has been some time since I have signed in to EA to play online (I have Battlefield 2142 and haven't played it in over a year). I went to ea.com to change my password and after doing so I found people saying that Origin is a spyware program for EA. Should I be concerned from just having gone to the website or is it just the Origin program that should cause someone to worry? I'm scanning with malwarebytes as this is being written.
2 AnswersVideo & Online Games9 years agoCan I play games in a diff resolution than what my resolution is at when not playing games?
My resolution is 1152 x 864 and I was wondering would it be alright for me to play games with a different resolution, like 1280 x 960. I am constantly hitting the 'start' button to minimize my game and listen to music on YouTube, listen to podcasts, etc., will this mess with anything? I am using a GTX 460 graphics card, I don't know if this info is needed.
