  • Dropped my laptop, will the black line get worse?

I dropped my laptop the other day and an uneven black line appeared across a corner (not across the screen. There's an obvious tiny white crack running through it. Around the crack is an uneven black line. It's bigger and fuzzier on one end and smaller on the bottom. The bottom is also greener and more spotty black. The top is solid black, not color at all.

What I want to know is, will it spread? I think it might be getting bigger, bt I can't tell if it's paranoia.

  • How to get the battery icon back into the tool bar?

My computer used to have the battery symbol in the corner with the clock, bt somehow yesterday I got rid of it. Now it won't let me put it back (the check box is faded out. How do I get it back? (I can still click to have the clock/volume/wifi displayed, but not power)

I tried opening the power plan section from the control panel, but there's no option to have it displayed from there.

I really need this icon, because my computer is old and the battery goes quick and without much warning. I have to keep an eye on it whenever it's unplugged!

  • Do you know of any sites for international schools like donorschoose?

I teach in a private school overseas. There are many things that the teachers need in their classrooms, but our small "class fund" simply doesn't allow us to get them.

Do you know of any sites like donorschoose.org that allow international schools to register?

I appreciate any and all ideas you might have!

  • Elementary Dissmissal (teachers please)?

    Teachers, especially private school teachers,

How do you handle after-school dissmissal? Do the children stay in your classroom? What do you have them do?

I teach in a small private school and in Kinder/Pre-Kinder the kids get out a full 40 minutes before elementary and over an hour before high school. Right now we are trying to work out a system of what to do with the kids in the twenty minutes between elementary dismissal and high school dissmissal.

Administration doesn't want the little ones running around on the playground and cantina area, but we, the teachers don't want them in our classrooms still (they've already been in there an extra 40 minutes by this point). What does your school do?

We have after-school care at 2:45, but that's 15 minutes after high school gets out.

  • In Secret Garden, why throw water?

In the Korean show Secret Garden, why does the mother keep threatening to throw water at Gil Ra Im? In a few episodes before she does it she threatens to throw water at Gil Ra Im's face (or at least that's how it comes out in the translations). Why?

I would understand if it was a heat of the moment kind of thing, but why threaten to do it before actually doing it? Is this a cultural thing, or just a weird thing of the mom?

  • Where can I watch tv for free in South America?

I recently moved to South America from the US and I'm a bit dissapointed that I can't access the popular US tv sites like Hulu and Xfinity anymore. I also don't live in a big country like Argentina or Brazil.

I'd like to continue watching a few of my favorite US shows and I was wondering if anybody knew of some good websites to use? No downloads, and no viruses (obviously). Thanks for any help you can give!

  • Icing without powdered sugar?

I am looking for a good icing recipe for cupcakes that has no powdered sugar, milk (for allergy reasons), eggs, or chocolate. I want to make cupcakes for my students but have no icing!

I've tried google, but can't find anything. I live in Paraguay, which means a walk to the grocery store, and it's raining. Therefore I am stuck with what I've got. I have regular coarse sugar, water, oil, etc

    Thanks for your help!

  • How to clean a doll with a stuffed body and plastic head?

I have a Madam Alexander stuffed doll with a cloth body and a hollow plastic head. The head is softish plastic and held on with a zip tie thing.

She was stored in attic during a move and now she has water stains over much of her body (the clothing doesn't seem to be stained). Other than this she's in pretty good condition, considering all the use she endured. Does anyone know how to get the water stains out? Or at least get them out of her hand, the rest don't show through her clothes.

I can't just throw her in the wash because she has a sqeaker and those "sleepy" eyes that move, plus she's about 23 years old.

She's precious to me becuase I loved her dearly as a child and my grandmother gave her to me. Please help!

She's basically this doll (only an older version with simpler clothing) http://www.madamealexander.com/product/0/29200/_/H...

  • Why a laptop and not a hair dryer?

So I'm getting ready to go overseas and I finally found a converter I can use with my laptop. My question is, if the converter can handle a laptop, why not a hair dryer? What is different about the hair dryer's wattage or voltage or whatever? Does it use DC and not AC or something?

I know the very basics of electricity and wiring, but not that much, so please put your answer in layman's terms. Thanks!

  • What is the point of a middle name?

My grandaddy refused to give his daughters middle names, because he knew they were just going to end using their last name as a middle name when they got married anyway.

Recently I've been idling wondering, what is the point of a middle name in the first place? Unless it's to name the child after a relative or as a double name (like Anna Grace), but if it's just a middle name for the sake of a middle name, why bother? Very few people use their middle names and unless you go by it, people rarely know each other's middle names.

Don't get me wrong, I love my middle name, but the primary reason I love it is because it is my grandmother's name and I share it with some of my cousins.

Don't give me some offended answer, it just a question that I would love to hear your thoughts about.

  • Do you regularly go to the library?

By regularly I mean at least once a month or at least go more than 10 times a year? (As a college student I know how a love of books doesn't always translate into the ability to read them for fun?)

What time of the year do you usually go? (typically I go a lot during school breaks)

If you don't go to the library often, is there a particular reason (super small, far away, don't like to)?

What do you usually go for (study, fun, programs)?

How many books do you usually check out? What kinds of books?

  • Moving to Paraguay? Advice?

I'm moving overseas to Paraguay in a few weeks for two years and I need packing advice!

I have a partially furnished apartment and a job already, and I'm living in the capital, Asuncion.

I am only taking two (very full) suitcases, and I'm kind of stressing about what to bring.

I've been overseas a few times, but not more than a month.

  • Different versions of A Midsummer's Night Dream?

I'm trying to find a variety of versions of A Midsummer's Night Dream, for a paper.

For example, if I were looking for Cinderella versions I would use Ever After, A Cinderella Story, the Rogers and Hammerstein version (that Brandy was in), and a few different versions from different countries.

That's basically what I'm looking for with the play.

I found a comic book version from when I was a kid. And I've seen "Were the World Mine" and another rock version, and a kid's version of it, but I'm looking for some more text versions/spin-offs to compare to the original (especially teen or adult books).

Thanks in advance for your help!

  • Finding the change in percent?

I know this should be a lot easier than it is, but I was up late and I've gone and confused myself!

Please read the whole description to make sure you are actually answering what I'm asking...

If I want to find the change in percent of a fraction, how do I do this?

    In other words:

If 11 out of 28 (11/28) students answer the question right on the pretest and 20 out 28 (20/28) students answered the question right on the post-test, what is the percent change of students who answered the question correctly?

I know that 39% answered the question correctly the first time, and 71% answered correctly the second, so do I just subtract 39 from 71, or do I do (20-11)/11, or (71-39)/71 or...?

  • What is the name of this ballet step? I think it's a male ballet step?

So my knowledge of ballet can pretty much fit in a thimble, but I was watching a ballet yesterday and there's a step that I want to know the name of because it's always one of my favorites to watch.

I've only ever seen men do it. The guy sort of quickly spins a bunch of times while going around the outside of the stage. But not spinning in a tight circle, more of a leap-spin? The arms and legs are spread out.

I'm hoping that someone with a good knowlege of ballet will know what I'm talking about, because I would have no idea where to even start looking in a "ballet step dictionary" on google. I tried to find a video, but since I have no idea what to call it, I couldn't find a good one.

  • Thomas Paine's Common Sense?

So I was reading through the fourth grade text book to get ready to teach tomorrow and I noticed that it said that "The pamphlet [Common Sense] was brief, inexpensive, and easy to understand" so I looked it up to print it. So far I haven't found a version that prints on less than 20 full pages.

I know I live in the modern age, but I'm a big reader and even I don't consider 20 pages brief. Also, how could that have been cheap to print? It's expensive even now!

Am I just crazy or is there an earlier version that was printed first that I could find? I'd like to have it for any kids that want to read it (you never know with my students) but 20 pages seems a awfully long...

  • Smoke Detector Advice?

So I've decided that all I want for New Year's is a new smoke detector. I would like one that goes off with reassuring regularity. As in, when I badly burn the toast, or set something on fire in the oven, or when I hold a smokey candle under it...

So any advice on good smoke detectors? I want a good quality one, but not one that's so expensive I can't afford it.

Also, I'd prefer one that doesn't go off every time I open the door after a hot shower.

  • Conditioner makes my hair fall out?

Does anyone else have this problem? Have you figured out a solution?

I've tried different brands of conditioners, I've tried different types of shampoos, but whenever I use conditioner I end up losing a lot more hair than usual in the shower. I'm talking like, the amount I would normally lose in a week. I even recently found that if I use really good quality shampoo that has conditioner type stuff in it, it will do the same thing on a slightly smaller scale. Before you say "You're supposed to lose some", yes, I know, but I mean I lose about five times the normal amount.

I stop losing so much hair when I go back to a less conditioning shampoo, like Fructis.

I was just wondering if anyone else has had this problem, I don't remember having this problem in high school, but now that I'm in my early twenties it seems to have become a problem. I really want soft hair (since I have thick, easily coarse hair), but obviously I can't lose a handful everyday!

  • What do you think is reasonable to charge for babysitting?

I'd like input from parents and from fellow babysitters.

I would love to hear what you usually pay your sitters, or what you typically charge.

Parents: how many kids do you have, and what kind of area do you live in (city, sub-urban, etc)

Sitters: basic age range (12-15, 16-18, 18+), do you charge differently for different numbers of kids?

I am 22, I have 10 years of experience and I am pretty good at what I do (honesty, not bragging).

I typically bring a craft to do with the kids and I can handle many different types of children, and a wide variety of ages. I do primarily Fri/Sat/Sun babysitting, and I babysit often.

I typically allow the parents to decide what they think is fair, but some parents are uncomfortable with that and I am trying to finally make a definite decision on what to say when they ask.

Side question: Parents, what would you expect to pay for an overnight job?

  • What's a good perfume? Guys or girls?

I know pretty much nothing about perfume and I really want to start wearing it sometimes. The problem is that I really don't know which ones people think smell the best. So, what is your opinion? Which ones smell the best? Which ones to guys like the best?

(and please don't say "the ones with blah blah undertones, becuase I really can't tell).

    Thanks for your help!
