  • Name of modern jazz waltz for big band?

I heard a fantastic modern waltz on a local jazz radio station (KSDS 88.3) in the middle of the night (around 11:25 or so, for any fellow San Diegans that also listen to 88.3), but couldn't catch the entire title/artist of it.

The DJ also happened to not record the name of the track in the station's playlist archive.

The closest I can remember the title being is something like "Many Better Days Ahead" or "Many Brighter Days Ahead," and I do remember it was by an Asian composer. The DJ also introduced it as one of the composer's "recent releases." I tentatively believe the composer is also female.

I can also narrow it down a bit more:

•It is NOT "Better Days Ahead" by Pat Metheny, or any big-band remake of it.

•The composer is NOT Toshiko Akiyoshi.

•If it makes a difference, the main theme is kind of like a fugue, and there is one solo for trombone, and one for baritone saxophone.

If anyone happens to know the title and/or composer/performer of this track, PLEASE let me know what it is!

    Thanks!

  • Music arranging - Getting permission to arrange a copyrighted tune?

So I recently finished a transcription & arrangement of a tune by the Pat Metheny Group...

obviously the tune is still copyright-protected, so I'm wondering how to get permission from the copyright owner to have my chart legally "arranged" and/or copyrighted as an arrangement.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

  • Gordon Goodwin Sax Feature Choices?

I've been looking around at Goodwin's sax quintet features, and am trying to choose between "The Royal Tomatoes", "No Harm, No Foul", and "Heterophonic Conuberations (!)". Because there's little (if no) audio previews of these charts, I would greatly appreciate any input as to which one I should purchase. Difficulty is no issue, nor is price.

Audio previews would be a big help, but if you've played any of these charts, I would appreciate your comments on these charts, too.

    Thanks!

  • Buying M-rated games w/o Driver's License?

I recently turned 17, so I can finally buy M-rated games without parent approval. Thing is, I don't have my drivers license yet (probably the only 17 yr. old without one) so I'm not sure if there's a way to verify my age for the cashier, short of bringing in my birth certificate =P.

Are there any other ways to verify age for M-rated games without a drivers license?

  • Soprano Saxophones: One piece vs. Dual-neck and Straight vs. Curved?

I'm thinking about getting a soprano saxophone for jazz and some wind ensemble clarinet parts but don't know if there is a difference between a one-piece body or a dual-neck body. I've been playing alto for about 6 or 7 years now.

I heard dual necks have more problems because the octave key spring tends to bend easily if there isn't a bumper in place b/c the necks are detachable, but I've never had it happen to me.

Also, are there any differences (tonal, action, etc.) between curved and straight sopranos? I've only tried a straight one.

Please don't recommend brands/makes of sopranos. Thanks for the help!

  • Xbox 360 Content Recovery??

OK, I know that this is probably been heard a lot before, but how in the heck can I get my downloaded content back again after getting a refurbished console from Microsoft? This happened to me the first time I sent a console in to be repaired, and nothing worked that time, either.

I have already tried Microsoft's 6 steps for content recovery (download each item again to get the licenses back) but IT DOES NOT WORK. And customer support doesn't know anything they are talking about.

All my content can't be used when I'm not connected to Xbox Live, and nothing on my brother's account works on my account no matter what the circumstances are. (Microsoft says that all content should work for all accounts on the same hard drive)

Is there a GUARANTEED way (NOT calling the customer service or using those stupid 6 steps again) to recover all my content? Or has Microsoft just screwed me over again?

  • iPod - Touch or classic?

So I'm thinking about buying a new iPod to replace my 2nd- generation (!) nano. Since I want to take advantage of the 10% discount from recycling old iPods to Apple, I plan on getting either the 8GB Touch or the 80GB Classic.

However, in the time since I first bought my old nano, I've only acquired a total of 342 songs and no movies/podcasts (1.49GB total) - I could hold more than enough songs on either iPod. I'm also attracted to the extra features of the Touch like Safari, iTunes Store, etc. since I'm usually going through my mail and stuff like that online.

However, the Classic costs $50 less than the Touch (before 10% discount) without the features from the Touch that appeal to me. What do you think is a better investment for me?

  • Rainbow Six Vegas 2 update for Xbox 360?

My brother and I share our 360 hard drive (both of us have a separate profile on it) and all the updates we download for our games are applied to both profiles. However, when my brother downloaded the ACES update for Vegas 2 recently, it only affected his profile.

The update shows all 100 ACES ranks on both our profiles, and shows that I have attained at least 35 on each ACES section (about 75,000 bonus xp EACH), but doesn't actually give me the xp (I'm still a first lieutenant - my rank before the update. My brother got all his XP and leveled up from a warrant officer to an Elite.)

Is this an unfixable glitch? Or is there a way that I can re-update the game so it works for both of us?

  • Soprano sax questions!?

I've been looking around for a good, middle-of-the-road soprano sax to join my alto. I absolutely adore the sound of the soprano, but I've heard that the soprano sounds like a goose if you don't have a good embouchure. I play in a jazz band that occasionally requires a clarinet / soprano part, (Hunting Wabbits and such) and also a concert band that does not have a dedicated (or competent) oboe player. I cannot afford to purchase a good tenor sax (would only like b/c it's in Bb also), and don't want to waste time with a bad one. I have 2 questions:

    1. Is it worth it to get a soprano? Some Bb players in my bands sometimes don't understand parts and I would like to be able to sight read them without transposing.

    2. If I decide to get one, what brand and make do you recommend? (Yamaha YSS, etc.)

  • Good Slow Piano Jazz pieces for Prom background?

So I was invited to play piano at my school's prom, and wanted to do a couple of slow jazz songs in the set. I already know songs like 'Round Midnight and Lullaby of Birdland and stuff like that, so I'm looking for some other (maybe not as well-known) pieces in that genre. I could possibly bring a saxophonist or a trumpeter with me too, but I'm mainly looking for pieces for piano, or piano that can stand alone or have an optional sax/trumpet part.

  • How to enable DVD+R playback from iMac w/Leopard onto DVD Player?

I recently tried burning a film from my iMac onto a blank DVD+R. The actual burning process is fine, and the DVD plays back great on my iMac, but when I try to use it in a regular DVD player, it brings up an error screen that says "Disc Error: DVD playback may not be enabled on this disc." Is there any way to fix this problem?

  • Definition of musical term "N.C."?

I know most of my music terms, but the abbreviation "N.C." can be found frequently in most of my music. I've searched for the term but can't find anything about it. If someone could provide the actual term (and/or the translation if not English), that would help greatly.

  • Cecilio saxophones?

I've been looking around for a (good) colored alto saxophone to buy & play with my brass one. I went on Google and found purple, red, and green saxophones from the maker Cecilio.

This is the only company I can find that has these colors, but the prices show it's been cut from $799 to about $299-$399.

I've heard that good saxophones shouldn't be under about $1000, but I'm not sure. Are these ones worth the money if they just fall apart when I play them?
