  • How do I plan a Christmas in Vermont?

I'm thinking that it might be nice to take my whole family (husband, kids, parents, etc) to a big cabin in Vermont and spend Christmas there. We are not skiers. I have never been to VT (we're from NY), so I wouldn't know where to begin. Have looked up some websites, but it's too convoluted. I think I need advice from someone who's been up there during the winter. Please tell me a town, and some attractions, or any other ideas.

  • Has anyone tried using a garden cart on the beach?

I would love to buy a real beach cart, but they're very expensive. I have a garden wagon with black rubber tires. Has anyone ever successfully used one of these on sand?

  • Getting 11 year old son to be on time?

He's a really good, responsible child. But he feels no need to pay attention to time. He oversleeps every morning insisting that he's got plenty of time. Normally, he does...rushing himself to get dressed, eat and brush his teeth just in the nick of time. And like clockwork, he waits until the last possible second to decide he needs a folder, wants different shoes, forgot to pack a book, etc. This morning, that was the case, and when his brother was in the driveway yelling" the bus is here"...he actually continued walking around looking for different shoes, casually...like he's in no hurry at all. I'm yelling, "hurry up!" the whole time, and he wanders around like there's no one waiting for him! He does this constantly and makes us late for all kinds of things. Why does he not understand this concept? When I take drastic measures, he tells me how horribly mean I am and still continues the same behavior.

  • How much to pay a mother's helper?

I live in a NY suburb. I am looking for a woman to come on the nights I am in school and my husband is home but working on the house. She will help with homework, make dinner and keep kids on a schedule until bedtime. What is the going wage for someone like that?

  • At my wits end with my 10 year old that leaves a trail everywhere...?

My 10 year old is a good kid, good student, all around liked child. But at home he is constantly the target of our (the parents) nagging. I try the nice way, I try the loud way, I try talking and reasoning...The boy leaves a trail everywhere. Within 15 minutes, he'll leave a granola bar wrapper on the counter, his shoes in the middle of the floor, juice on the counter, his game on the couch, etc. Literally. We have talked and pleaded, and punished, and rewarded. The other thing, which is also caused by his inability to focus, is that he can't do one task without getting distracted on the way by 5 others. When he's told to take a shower, he spends the first 20 min. in the bathroom playing with his hair, drawing in the steam on the mirror, etc. He doesn't have ADD. But this seems to just be the "way he is". Is there a point at which you stop picking him and say, "that's just him and he can't change ?" He always feels targeted but I can't pick up after him every minute, etc.

  • Native American Osage tribe. What type of longhouse?

My son needs to make a model of a longhouse of the Osage Indian tribe. I would like to make this somewhat correct, but there seem to be 2 general types of longhouses....some are rounded and some are squarish and with a peaked roof. There are no pictures I can find which refer specifically to the Osage Indians or the Missouri area. Anyone know?

  • What milk should kids drink?

I have 2 boys, 8 and 10 years old. I have heard arguments from every side about which milk our kids should drink. I buy organic milk, but that's all I know for sure. Whole milk: fattening but has more digestible vitamins and calcium? Low fat milk: just the opposite. Which is true?

  • Fat atrophe from a shot? Like a dent in your skin....?

I got a cortizone shot in the rear end and now a few months later I have a depression in my butt cheek! I read that it's something that sometimes happens from a steroid shot....called "fat atrophy"....when the fat cells die under the skin leaving a depression. Can I do anything to repair the spot? It looks stupid. I know it's hidden most of the time, but I hate it!! LOL

  • What is appropriate for a Jewish funeral when sending condolences?

My professor just lost her father and I would like to send something because I cannot attend the funeral. I have no idea how this works, and I am told they are sitting Shiva and have been given an address for both locations. I have also read that flowers aren't appropriate. What do I send and to which location (funeral or shiva)? And can someone briefly describe Shiva? Thanks.

  • Girls night in ideas?

In December before Christmas. We're all in our 30's with kids. NOrmally we sit around drink, munch and get very silly talking. Last time I busted out some embarassing old photos and it was a good laugh. Anyone have any original ideas for something else to add to the night? I considered pre-baking some cookies and having everyone decorate and take cookies home, but my husband said that was too Martha Stewart. No movies, no makeovers.

  • Modern fairy tale illustrators?

Can anyone name some of the better known illustrators who have done new, twisted, different, dark versions of fairy tales or fables? I'm looking for someone like Gris Grimly, but another illustrator with a volume of work like he has. I know there are tons of books out there, but I'm trying to find out if the bigger names have done fairy tale art that not everyone knows about.

  • Need "no oil" dressing/marinade recipies.?

My husband has lately been unable to have any type of oil without getting sick afterward and also can't have dairy. I use olive oil in just about everything and it makes it very difficult to cook things with some flavor.

Anyone have any easy tasty recipies for dressings that go on salads and veggies, and recipies for marinades for meats?

  • I can't turn on my new laptop!?

Ok, I feel like an idiot, but I just received my refurbished laptop and can't turn it on. I have the adapter plugged into the wall and into the computer and nothing's happening. The hole where the adapter goes into fits really tightly, so I thought it was the wrong adapter. They told me they checked it before shipping. I press the on button and nothing happens. Am I too stupid to turn on the laptop? Is there a trick to it? It's a Panasonic toughbook.

  • Transformers...who's seen it and how young is too young for kids..?

I have an 8 yr old and a 91/2 year old boy and I would love to take them to this but I'm afraid it's going to be over the top. I have read there's not blood or deaths on screen and there's mild language. How bad is the language and the sexual inuendo? I'm not too worried about a bunch of robots beating each other up, you see that on cartoons every day. But I do think there's a limit. Anyone seen it?

  • How many mothers feel like they can't enjoy their children.......?

I am not commenting on my personal situation.......

There was a book that came out a few years ago about the secret feelings that alot of mothers have when they're overwhelmed with their kids and lack of sleep and work etc......feelings of wanting to get away from the kids and everything else. Then they feel guilty for those feelings.

Would any mothers be willing to share similar feelings or situations or give advice to those who need support?

  • Has anyone seen or heard of other countries that use methane as fuel?

They use the methane that is naturally produced in garbage dumps/landfills to run the entire place. They have special systems that use methane gas. What do you think of this idea?
