  • Anyone know anything about canopy beds?

I just bought my daughter a canopy bed, but the top part doesn't actually come with the canopy drapery itself. So far all my internet searches come up with those mosquito-net type things, some of which are cute but aren't made for a frame.

Can I just use a sheet or something? Or where do I look for a drapery that fits? It's for a little girl's twin bed. Your advice is appreciated.

  • Pagans and atheists, how many of you are parents?

This board has spoiled me with all the material to talk about. I've also been chatting on a local Moms board, and there's so much ooohing and aaahing about church daycares and camps, and religious cartoons for kids. I feel kind of awkward mentioning on there that these things aren't da bomb for everyone. At which point they all moon over how open-minded they are but *they* aren't bothered by religious overtones in everything. Suddenly I feel like the only pagan/atheist parent around!

So how many of you are parents? Do you ever bring up your dissent when religious parents are whooping it up?

  • Shuttle service or other transportion so I don't have to bring a car seat?

I will need to get my family from the airport to the cruise harbor, and I'd really prefer not to bring the car seat if I can possibly get around it, although I will if I have to. Is there any shuttle service that provides them? Or do any seasoned traveler out there know a secret?

The cruise shuttle won't take us because our flight arrives ten minutes after their deadline, so I have to find some other way.

  • Bug experts, what could this be?

I've seen a really beautiful and strange insect around my neighborhood, in yards and by the park. It's about an inch long and is shaped like a big ant. It's a deep sapphire-blue/black with black wings. Sorry I have no picture, it's always gone by the time I get my camera.

The first time I saw it I thought it might be a queen ant due to its size and shape, but I've seen several now and I didn't think queen ants would be out and about that much. I went most of my life without ever seeing one and now I've seen this about five times. But I'm no expert.

Any suggestions where I could start looking up what it may be?

  • From an administrative standpoint, what happens when someone dies?

I'm familiar with the stages of grieving, but I am wondering about the business of death.

I know my father has a will, but both my sister and I live several states away from him. He's already fought cancer once and goes hunting a lot, even though he's very old and is a lifetime smoker. He lives alone but does have some friends.

So I was wondering, if he dies, say, hunting or something and is found, who would notify me? How would they find my phone number? Who executes the will, makes arrangments, etc? Would I need to do anything? I have small children and I'd hate to drag them around the country or leave them for long.

No one close to me has ever died - does anyone know what happens?

  • Tips for French-style apple tart?

Okay, I've found a recipe for a French-style apple tart, but I like to compare recipes before trying something new and I've only found one in the style I want.

I'm trying for the kind of apple pie they serve in France, with the apples sliced thinly and packed very close together in sections, no goop inside, no crust on top. Has anyone made this kind and can give me tips?

  • Would someone please post a good write-up of the Atheist's Wager?

I've seen some eloquent versions of it and I'd like to keep one on file, to paste for people who ask Pascal's Wager questions.

  • Pool care - problem pool, any advice?

Our backyard pool is a monster! It greens up if you look at it crossways, and even when it's about the right color it's cloudy as heck. Chemical tests show we've gotten the PH good, but hardly any chlorine to show for all the chlorine we've been dumping in there! What are we missing?

  • Advice from experienced sorbet makers?

I just made my first sorbet, raspberry, and it turned out very well. There are two other flavors I want to try this summer, a blackberry and a white peach.

Blackberries tend to be very tart and need more sugar, and white peaches tend to be sweet and need less. So what I"m wondering is, when making sorbet with these fruits, do I change the ratio of sugar to water in my simple syrup (make it thicker or thinner), or do I just make more or less syrup total as needed? What would be the effects?

    Thanks!

  • How do I find a licensed contractor?

I need my bathroom basically remodeled and I am clueless how to get started. I have a good idea what I want but I don't know how to find someone to do it - they don't leave cards or flyers like the pool and yard service people do. Any suggestions? Where I start looking?

  • Baby has a strong gag reflex, any advice on getting her used to table foods?

My baby is 9 months old and eating pretty much all mushy baby foods. However, she gags whenever I try to give her things more like table foods, such as mushed bananas or peaches, or avocado, or cheerios... that's as far as I've gotten because she gags and spits up every bite of anything thicker than baby food. She is just now coming around to eating those little baby food puffs but won't touch the wagon wheels.

Any advice on getting her used to table food? Her doctor wants me to start weaning her but I don't think she's ready.

  • I didn't see the South Park Easter special. What happened?

People on here keep mentioning it, but I didn't get to see it because the show is not always appropriate for my little son. Would someone kindly give me the synopsis, please?

  • Any helpful hints when discussing a violent child with a day care?

There's a kid at my son's daycare with Down Syndrome who's been biting, scratching, and hitting the other chlidren. Last week he bit my son so hard that even through his jeans, he had a huge bite-shaped bruise.

My husband and I are going in on Friday to talk to them about this. At a minimum, I'd like for that violent kid to be more closely supervised. Has anyone dealt with this before? I'd appreciate any advice. Thanks!

  • Does Quinoa have calcium?

I read an article that said it has a lot of calcium, but when I went to the store to buy it, the nutrition label says Calcium 0%. This is not the first time I've seen a nutrition label contradict something that is said about a food and the nutrients it contains. Does anyone know why? Is there really none, or only none that's been tested?

  • What sorts of learning activities teach children problem-solving and critical thinking?

My children are young yet and will go to public school, but I'm wondering what I can do to help them develop, on the side and on vacations, problem-solving and critical-thinking skills. What sorts of games and activities encourage this?

  • What's the best thing to do when your toddler says, "I hate you'?

Actually it's not as bad as that... lately when my husband says, "I love you" to our 2 1/2 year old son, he replies, "I don't love you." It really hurts my husband's feelings. I'm sure our son will grow out of it, but what's the best reaction?

My husband is a bit more strict with our son than I am and I think he sets them up for a battle of wills (whereas I am more gentle but more implaccable). No drastic difference though. Thanks for your thoughts.

  • Advice from meringue experts?

I'm a pretty experienced cook, except when it comes to baking. My husband likes meringue cookies, and I downloaded some recipies that seemed simple enough, except they didn't turn out like they're supposed to. I know the basic theory of meringue but I'm not good at it. It just doesn't seem fluffy enough, and when dried in the oven the cookies seem soft instead of crisp.

What could I be doing wrong? Adding the sugar at the wrong time? Over or under beating? Oven-drying at the wrong temp? I'd appreciate some advice on meringue, especially for cookies.

  • Pagans, what do you do for Imbolc?

I usually just wear my pentacles, make a lamb dish for dinner, and have a fire. I don't like to do outlandishly silly things, but I was wondering what more dedicated practicers than I do to make the day stand out.

  • Where can I find links for my charm bracelet?

I have a charm bracelet, but a couple of the charms I ordered recently don't have a link that I can use to attach them to the bracelet. Can anyone tell me where to find something like this?
