My SN references the movie The Big Lebowski. I'm an atheist/pantheist.

  • what does this sign language gesture mean?

Hands are held a few inches apart, slightly cupped. They are rotated in opposite directions relative to each other, twisting the wrists so that their positions oscillate, between one being above and perpendicular to the other, and the other hand being above. Thanks!

  • Should I lie and say I had cancer to explain a gap in employment?

From what I can tell, employers can't ask for your medical history. Is there any way an employer could find out?

Luckily, the most common cancer among young males, testicular cancer, has a very high cure rate, so I could talk about it in a way that would require relatively little acting skill. And plus, it would be especially reasonable for me to say I'd rather people don't know about it and I'd rather not talk about it any more.

  • What is the best way to intentionally fade corduroy?

I have a casual brown corduroy blazer (very 60s looking or something) that I think I want to fade to a lighter / less saturated shade. I figure that way it'll go awesome with pastel shirts, and will still go well with greys and earthtones like it does in its present darker state.

    It says on the tag:

"Machine was warm, Wash and dry with like colors, Only non chlorine bleach when needed, Tumble dry medium, Warm iron, Iron on reverse side only, Or dry clean" and "Shell: 100% cotton, Sleeve lining: 100% polyester"

I've never washed it before. And now that I think about it it would actually be a bonus if it shrunk an inch or two. I'm guessing since the corduroy stripes are vertical, more of the fibers are more vertical, so it would shrink more in the vertical direction of the stripes, if it shrinks much at all?

Anyways, if I dry it at high heat, or even better by itself at high heat, will that fade it appreciably on the first washing? And if so, would I also be risking damaging the fabric in a way that doesn't look very good?

I've heard that drying things outside in the sun will fade them, but I don't have a spot outside where I can do that.

  • Receiver settings to work with upgraded front L/R speakers?

I have a 5.1 system (Onkyo HT-R340 receiver) that has a crossover setting that sets the crossover the same for all speakers that are set as "Small". You can't set crossovers individually for each channel. But you can set a speaker as "Large" to give it the full band, in which case you can also set "Double Bass" on which sends the bass component (crossover not specified by owner's manual) for that speaker to the subwoofer AS WELL.

My question is if I were to buy replacements for the front L/R speakers that aren't full range (because I'm young and poor) but would do better with like an 60hz crossover as opposed to the 120hz that would be good for the other 3 speakers, would it be better to set the crossover at 60hz (for all speakers; all would be set as "Small"), or set the crossover at 120hz and set the front L/R speakers as "Large" (full band)? Or maybe set the crossover at 90hz?

I'm thinking mainly of music and want to optimize the system for music. The thing is I love using "All Ch Stereo" to get a really room filling sound no matter where you are in the room. Or would better L/R speakers make that unnecessary? (Except for when I've got guests or I'm moving around doing stuff.)

  • Accessing West Suffield Mountain portion of CT's Metacomet trail?

I can see from maps that the trail intersects Mountain Rd (Rt 168) on the north end, and Turkey Hills Rd (Rt 20) further south. But I went to these spots, and was like wtf?! No signage at all. No parking that I could find. No clue as to where the trailhead is.

I live in East Windsor and want to be able to get a little hiking in without having to trek over to the Berkshires or up to New Hampshire. The Windsor Locks canal path is... paved.

  • god vis a vis logic...?

Many a time theists and atheists alike find themselves attempting to apply logic to god. I'm wondering, does that make any sense to do? Isn't god (logically!) defined as being above logic? I mean, he's supposed to be above EVERYTHING, right? Ultimate? Transcendent?

Could god make an illogical statement logical by fiat if he so chose? You could argue that since he's omniscient, he doesn't change his mind (how boring that must be for him!), so the question is nonsensical. But perhaps god has a separate illogical universe somewhere in his attic... or would that be illogical?

Is god bound by the rules of logic, or is logic subordinate to god? Did he create logic on the zeroth day? Am I making any logical sense here? Or should I just go to sleep already and dream wonderful logical dreams?

  • Oil absorption of fried foods - batter vs breading?

Generally speaking, which will absorb less oil during frying and be less fattening, something coated in a flour-egg-breadcrumb breading, or something coated in a simple batter. A lighter more airy batter vs a thicker batter? Beer batter?

  • How many of you have seen Obama's Q+A at the House GOP Conference?

How many of you YA Politics dwellers have watched Obama's Q+A at the House GOP Conference? I don't mean heard about it. I don't mean saw a few snippets of it interspersed with inane punditry. I don't mean watched the first 4 minutes of the 86 minute video on youtube and then commented "were are the questions?" I mean watched the whole thing. Either that or at least the portion shown on Fox News before they cut off the live feed - perhaps because it was too embarrassing for the GOP, or perhaps because it made the overall narrative Fox News presents look ridiculous - what with their MO as a "fair and balanced" "news" source.

Anyway personally I found it as refreshing as a tall glass of lemonade, and recommend to anyone, conservative or liberal or confused or crazy, to watch it instead of sitting drooling in front of a cable news channel for 86 minutes, or bickering on this website.

    So my question is:

    A: Have you watched it?

    B: What are your thoughts?

    Here's the video:

  • Why don't xtians have a problem with star wars?

I'm not talking about crazy fundamentalists that complain about Harry Potter and his bag of magic tricks. I'm talking about more mainstream xtians. They don't seem to think twice about "the force" - a vaguely pantheistic sounding "mystical energy field" that "surrounds us and penetrates us" and "binds the galaxy together" and "will be with you always".

I can't help but think their religion is to them really like a movie they arbitrarily think is real.

If we atheists all just call ourselves pantheists like einstein, will america stop hating us?

  • What if the Society & Culture icon were the Religion & Spirituality icon?

I just noticed the icon, and initially thought it was specific to R&S. It's comprised of what appears to be a bible or other holy text, and, a christmas wreath. If this were the R&S icon, what would you think of it? Discuss.

  • How did America's feelings on god diverge so dramatically from Europe's?

Many americans are appalled by atheism. This is not the case in europe or canada. How did this happen? How much blame can we place on sensational newspaper coverage of the Scopes Trial? On Joe McCarthy? Any history majors/buffs out there?

  • Is "now" an "illusion"?

Some will say one's experience of the present is merely equivalent to memory of the past. That science cannot support a perception of time as passing by at some rate, and I don't dispute that. But I ask you, is that what "now" really is?

  • "Why not save a step?"?

Instead of saying a creator god always existed, why not save a step and say the universe always existed? I think this phrase "why not save a step?" really distills things nicely. And in an unassuming, non threatening way.

Carl Sagan and chirping birds are also great at being non threatening:

  • Its is dumb.........?

Whoever decided that the possessive from of it should be its instead of it's was a moron. It's completely inconsistent and pointless. Am I wrong? Am I missing something here? Why do people go along with this and perpetuate it? This has always bugged me but I've only just now taken the time to notice that the reason I have to consciously be aware of it in order to get it "right" for sure is because it makes no sense.
