I hear people using this term in reference to places like the US, Canada, Western European countries, Japan, etc. But aren't ALL countries in the 2017 a "modern nation"? Doesn't the word modern mean 'today' making all countries around today a "modern nation"?

The left have a bunch of SJW cry babies who want to ban anything they deem offensive. The right wants to ban an entire religion/belief system from the country. They also elected a man who wants to loosen libel laws cuz his little feelings get hurt. Can someone explain why Americans are starting to turn away from the first amendment?
