What drives people to rescue others?
Humans are self-interested creatures, so you might conclude that people are often minding their own business and disinterested in the affairs of their fellow human beings. Society is becoming increasingly individualistic so people are unlikely to meddle in irrelevant affairs. But when it comes to situations where others are in physical danger, people don't hesitate to help out. What drives people to rescue others? For example, if a child was drowning, there's bound to be a stranger out there to rescue them. If a young woman were about to end her life ((http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jqdJ828zy%E2%80%A6 people still stop and rescue her (law enforcement or not). These are the exact same people who you'd ignore if there were no threat presented, yet when faced with a life-threatening situation these complete strangers suddenly have the desire to demonstrate an act of selflessness and compassion. What drives people to rescue others?

3 AnswersPhilosophy9 years agoAchilles and the Tortoise?
I'm having trouble understanding Zeno's paradox about Achilles and the tortoise (and all of his paradoxes but that's a whole 'nother matter)
1. Was Zeno trying to prove that infinity doesn't exist
OR that time is discrete?
2. If the race course consists of infinitely divisible parts 1/2, 1/4, 1/8 .. and this was added, wouldn't this lead to a finite 'sum' of 1? I'm assuming that it's possible for a infinite number of terms to result in a finite conclusion, so the infinite value of 0.999999 would essentially be the same as one.
3. (I read here http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AiXj6... that) Zeno hypothesizes that Achilles does pass the tortoise but if this is so, how is this denying the existence of change and motion?
I don't know how this proves that motion doesn't exist?
And finally, is Achilles actually able to reach the tortoise?
ANY help would be appreciated

33 AnswersPolls & Surveys10 years agoFinding standard error without σ or n?
A veterinary medical association conducted a survey of veterinary clinics to estimate the proportion that do not treat large animals. The survey was mailed to a random sample of 120 veterinary clinics throughout the country and of these, 88 responded that they do not treat large animals.
The standard error of the proportion 'p' of clinics that do not treat large animals is:
p=120/88 ????
1 AnswerMathematics10 years agoStandard deviation s?
The mean score of 500 students on a statistics test is 45 and s (sample standard deviation) is 5.
If two points were added to each of the 500 scores, the new s would be:
a) 2.5
b)3
c)5
d)10
The answer is c but I'm not sure how?
Would a confidence interval be used in this case?
Same with If two points were subtracted from each of the 500 scores, the new s would also be 5.. (not sure how this works..)
2 AnswersMathematics10 years agoSampling distributions?
The homework question: The distribution of young adult partners ratings of how satisfied they are with their relatinships is skewed to the left, with μ= 8.4 and σ=1.2 on a scale of 0-10. These values are not known by a sociologist who takes a random sample of four young adults residing together in households to estimate the mean partner satisfaction rating of young adults.
a. What is the mean and standard error of the sampling distribution of the sample mean?
[My answer: I think. μ=8.4 and the standard error = σ/√n = 1.2/√400 =0.06]
Did I get the answer right? They were asking for the sample mean and μ is a notation for the population mean so I'm a little unsure
b. What proportion of the sample means will be more than the population mean?
[I'm a little sure of what they're asking. If there are repeated samples of a certain size (n), then the observations begin to take shape of a normal distribution, so.... I can't make the connection. ]
Any clarification would be awesome
1 AnswerMathematics1 decade agoIs my answer right........?
Normal distribution question:
N(12.64, 2.18)
Find P[X>16]
Sub x=16 into z-score formula
z=x-μ /σ
z=16-12.64 / 2.18
z= 1.54 (round up to 1.55)
according to table of standard normal probabilities, cumulative p-value of 1.55 is 0.93943
1-0.93943 = 0.06057
Therefore, proportion above x=16 is 0.06057?
1 AnswerMathematics1 decade agoCumulative proportions?
EG.
μ=60, σ=14, x=76
z=x-μ/ σ
=76-60/14
=1.14
I rounded off z=1.14 to the nearest z (1.15)
And found the cumulative proportion of z by looking at a random number table, and the value I found in the random number table was 0.8749.
BUT!!! the 'Solutions' stated that the value was 0.87493, which I'm assuming was figured out by hand. Does anyone know how this cumulative proportion was calculated (if it's possible to calculate cumulative proportion by hand)?
1 AnswerMathematics1 decade agoAre there "cliques" at your uni?
My uni is huge so no one really knows each other. Furthermore, my degree is messy because I decided to change my program half-way through second year so its difficult to form a group/notice any distinct groups.
Are there any "cliques"/ friendship groups where you study??

Why do people still measure Nominal GDP if real GDP is a more accurate measure of newly produced goods and services? :/
I don't really understand what the GDP deflator is meant to do... Why do we have it? (I've tried researching it, but none of it explains what it is, why we have it, and why it's calculated the way it is? The GDP deflator accounts for inflation, but doesn't Real GDP do that anyway?)

2 AnswersEconomics1 decade agoIs this true for anyone else?
I have a Vietnamese background. What I've noticed is that people usually don't move out of home unless they're "married off". That's how I saw my aunts and uncles (Dad's side) move out of home. They all used to live with my grandparents and one-by-one slowly moved out. One of my aunts' did not move out of home until she was married at 27 years of age..
Some people don't really see it as a problem, but others don't understand when I explain why I haven't moved out yet (I'm 19)
Does this happen in anyone else's family?

I have 2 siblings.
