What is the case for making Washington DC a new state rather than absorbing the non-governmental parts into either Virginia or Maryland?
I get the "taxation without representation" angle since DC residents pay federal taxes without voting representatives in the Congress. But there is no precedent for a single city being its own state. I'd suggest instead that the governmental facilities remain in a federal district while the other parts of the cities become part of either Virginia or Maryland, thus giving the residents of the city representation vis a vis those already existing states. What would be the problem with that?
7 AnswersGovernment9 months agoEveryone knows what right-wing extremism looks like (nativism, white supremacy, etc). Is left-wing extremism a thing? What does it look like?
"Extremist" as in, ethically and/or morally compromised. What would be considered extremist views from the left side of the political spectrum? Currently, and historically? Or even, is there such a thing...maybe that all politically extremist positions exist on the right, and all left-leaning positions are ethically and morally valid by default?
7 AnswersPolitics3 years agoDoes Sinclair have the right to publish opinion/viewpoint pieces on its stations and have its employees tow the views of headquarters?
Or are they breaking the law or FCC regulations by publishing politically biased infomercials on local news stations and compelling employees to air things against their will and consciences?
If your response is along the lines of "It's not illegal, but it's wrong!" my questions are:
-Is Sinclair the only news source with politically biased coverage in the country?
-If not, what makes it wrong and punishable for them to publish bias but not for other organizations to do the same?
2 AnswersPolitics3 years agoDavid Hogg can be "uncivil" towards opponents (see video). Why then should those who are "uncivil" towards him have their careers destroyed?
First an example of what Hogg apparently views as "civil discourse," using profanity and wild accusations to attack people who disagree with him:
https://youtu.be/-k7IKnzZeK0?t=216
This is important because it informs how people are allowed by the culture to respond to and disagree with what he says. He's allowed to sling mud, but no one else can retaliate or criticize him.
First, Hogg insinuates that he was rejected by several colleges because they "don't want to support him in changing the world." This ignores the fact that college applications take a long time to process, that more than likely he applied before the shooting and CERTAINLY before his current cultural prominence, so the decision to reject him was based on his grades, not his activism:
https://youtu.be/IqYlxualEgs?t=99
Critics point this out:
https://i2.wp.com/thepoliticalinsider.com/content/...
He reacts badly to this, demanding that either she or her advertisers be put out of business for daring to make the criticism:
http://cdn01.dailycaller.com/wp-content/uploads/20...
She apologizes (stupid move, IMO):
https://www.dailydot.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/0...
He rejects her apology, demanding a denouncement of "mudslinging at children", despite all the mud he has slung.

Why the double standard?
4 AnswersJokes & Riddles3 years agoWhy are my answers not appearing to other Yahoo Answer users? My comments and questions do, but not my answers. Have I been shadowbanned?
Click on my user profile. Check under "Answers." You can see my answers to different questions there, but if you follow the link to the question page and look for my answer you will not find it. This goes as far back as I can find. *I* can see my answers on the page, but no one else can...it's like they're not there.
Have I been shadowbanned? What rules did I break? Is this because I had to fight to keep my questions in the correct category when Level 7's try to move them out to prevent them from being seen (I'm talking, multiple moves of the same question even after I edit the question to make it clear where I want it)? Is that against the rules, to violate where a Level 7 user puts my questions? Or is it something else?
7 AnswersYahoo Answers3 years agoWhy are conservative speakers so much more dangerous? E.g., banned from schools, made to spend $100K's on security, moved to smaller venues?
Conservative speakers are regularly banned from college campuses and disinvited from events because of the threats of violence that accompany their seminars. When they are allowed on campuses they are often moved to much smaller venues and non-students are forbidden from attending due to security threats. Many times university officials discover last-minute security concerns that cause such speakers or student organizations inviting them to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars on extra security. Yet, you never hear of any of these issues with speakers and events that are progressive or on the left.
Are conservative speakers just more dangerous and violent than progressive, left-leaning speakers? Or is it their intended audience...gun-happy, racist, angry, violent conservatives who are likely to attack or kill anyone who disagrees with them in their safe space? What gives?
9 AnswersOther - Politics & Government3 years agoIs failing to use a transgendered person's preferred name and pronouns discrimination, and should it be punishable by fines/imprisonment?
The California state senate does. We'll see if the other organs of the California state legislative process feel the same.
https://leginfo.legislature.ca.gov/faces/billTextC...
"...the bill would make it unlawful...for any long-term care facility to...willfully and repeatedly [fail] to use a resident’s preferred name or pronouns after being clearly informed of the preferred name or pronouns..."
It would be a misdemeanor punishable by a $1000 fine and/or a year in prison.
"But how can you be against being respectful to sick people and old people!"
Because this is how it starts. The government and I have a deal, signed upon by my forefathers, where it agrees, among other things, to not punish me for my words.
The government is beginning to break its deal with me.
So do the words you use to describe someone now fall outside of the realm of protected speech, and can using the wrong words make you guilty of committing a crime? Bonus points to the first ignoramus to talk about crowded fires in theaters.

5 AnswersLaw & Ethics4 years agoIs it unethical or racist to criticize Kaepernick and attempt to boycott the NFL because you don't like his kneeling for what he believes in?
What makes it different from getting working to get someone fired from Google, or a Berkeley hot dog restaurant, or a University of Arkansas Engineering professorship, all things which have happened in the last two weeks or so? Why are those good and proper things to do, but I'm an evil bigoted racist for not wanting to support Colin Kaepernick?

8 AnswersPolitics4 years agoBoth parties have abused gerrymandering. Would you be in favor of computerized redistricting based only on population density?
As in, a computer program looks at the population densities of each state and draws the districts so that each Congressional district has the same number of people and is geographically contiguous (that is, no panhandle districts that have long, narrow corridors designed to pick up the maximum number of voters of a certain type)?

-Independent journalists were documenting the protests
-A leftist "journalist" recognized several of them and tweeted their pictures out to the crowd, describing them as nazis
-The crowd reacts as you'd expect for people who have been taught by the the media and tolerant leftist culture that it's okay to "punch a nazi"...they attack them.
We were all told that punching nazis was acceptable if you saw them. Still think that's a good idea?
