Is a tuna melt supposed to be served open faced or not?

I know that it can be served either way, but which way is traditional?

Traditionally, it is served without a top slice of bread. It's usually so heavy and messy, you wouldn't pick it up anyway, but instead use a knife and fork.

I always knew of it being served closed baked as a sandwich.

Always open faced. I like it best when you get a little burn on the cheese with the broiler.
