My friend and I are curious. He's a filthy botter and I reported him. He wants to know, though, how Jagex finds the bots, if it's through reporting or if they have something that notifies them. But I'd like to know, too, cause I will report more bots than ever. And they're getting more intricate. The one he has allows him to move himself at will and he can talk, too.

Bots work in pretty much standard patterns repeated for hours on end. Those patterns are what Jagex looks for. When a player reports someone for botting Jagex starts looking for patterns in that players actions to confirm he/she is a bot.
Jagex isn't going to reveal all the methods they have for detecting bots, otherwise the bot makers would just program their bots to avoid doing things that trip the detectors. They do rely on reports so definitely keep reporting botters but they also have other methods as well including legal actions against some of the bot companies.
Jagex don't reveal their systems; however the way I see this is patterns, buying and selling habits, logins, and the code that is sent back to their server.
Each report flags an account to be investigated and triggers the system to check and monitor the account.
If you respond with the account name and where it bots, I'll get a Jagex Moderator to check it.
