Can dark matter and dark energy be considered a overlapping parallel universe conceptually and does the math support that hypothesis? if not why is the distinction made?

You have to remember that these things have never been observed: they are strictly science fiction. Scientists tell us that 96% of the universe is dark matter. If that were true, observations would be irrelevant.
