If you're looking for something that will last 6-7 years and are okay with something expensive: MacBook's are the way to go.
Best Quality: Dell
Best All Feature and Bang for Buck: HP/Compaq
There are other great brands as well, but some of their laptop models are hit and miss.
If you're okay with spending a thousand dollars, I say go with the MacBook line. The aluminum unibody makes it really durable. You can install windows on it as well!

Lenovo is a good brand, I wouldn't buy a dell, for example try finding out who makes the system board in a particular dell model. Asus provides more system boards to the industry than any other manufacturer so Asus is good. Toshiba has been making quality laptops for years. I've owned a Toshiba 17" for many years and it just keeps going. For portability and lightweight as well as the ability to use as a tablet check the lenovo Yoga 13.

Decide by defining the use you plan on. If you're going to be editing photo's and movies, then any Mac will do. If you're going for the office environment then any Windows PC will do. Dell has a reputation for quality and longevity that I can attest to. I've had my Dell laptop for so long that the coin cell battery on the motherboard depleted. Replacing it has given new life to the old codger but it hasn't failed me yet.
