Can I wash wool slacks in my washer?
My husband just bought a bunch of new work pants (and had them altered) before he looked at the cleaning instructions. The instructions say dry-clean (P with a circle around it), but my washer has a hand-wash cycle. Would the handwash cycle work, or should I use a dry-cleaner? Also, would one of those home dry-cleaning kits work? Thanks for any advice!

water and fine wool slacks are not a good combination. If washed, the seams will pucker as the fabric shrinks unevenly. Dry Cleaners should be able to wash slacks for about $1-$2 per pair. No shame in wearing them two or three times between dry cleanings as long as you don't get them to sweaty or sloppy.

If your washer has a hand-wash cycle it also means that it would be a very gentle cycle and not beat them to death and probably also be cold water, I'll bet you it would be fine, I certainly would try one pair and the dryer envelope you put in your dryer is very expensive over a period of time.

Don't do it! They will surely shrink in the washer.
The good news, however, is that those home dry-cleaning kits DO work...UNLESS the pants (or whatever) are stained in which case, I would highly recommend having them professionally cleaned.
