Why do you read and what, specifically, do you get out of it?

I'm looking for thoughtful answers here, guys. I'd like to see answers that consider why the act of reading is meaningful - you can mention specific genres if you'd like. Why do you ENJOY reading, and how do you think it makes you better? In what ways?

As always, thank you all.

Alright. I'm going to confess. I love those mushy historical romance novels. Now I am an educated woman with a full life, so it's not about wishful thinking. I thinks its more about escapism. I am taken back to a different time and culture, transported into lives that are adventurous. I'm a play-it-safe kind of girl, so reading about bold, sassy women doing anything to get their man kind of inspires me. I also enjoy the history. Early British History and Colonial American History are fascinating to me. I particularly enjoy books that have plots woven around true events and characters. It seems to bring history alive and make it more personal. But that's just me. Reading historical romance novels is what gave me a new interest in my own history. Now is has become a hobby.

I feel alert and mentally quicker when I read more often. Reading stimulates your mind in ways that no other media can. You are using both sides of your brain at one time. Your cognitive side is reading the actual words and the artistic side is creating images to match the words. In addition, reading exposes you to new ideas even if they are hidden in the story of fictional book.

Besides that, there is nothing as comforting as curling up on the couch with a good book. It's a wonderful escape that engrosses you in a way that no movie ever could. The rest of the world just seems to disappear.

I often read and reread Edward de Bono's work. He's a real genius that teaches people about systematic creativity.

I'm a prolific idea creator and innovator today because I have studied his methods since the early 90s. I really recommend his books to anyone who wants to think better and develop awesome creativity skills!

I read different things, and get different things from each.

*I read the news, because I want to be updated.

*I read especially international news, because I want to know how other people live, and think.

*I read questions and answers at Q&A for the same reason as above.

*I read detective stories (like Agatha Christie) because I like getting into the story, and trying to figure out who did it.

*I read fiction in general, because I like imagining those fictional settings and people.

*I read things about languages and linguistics, because that's my main passion.

*I read things about history, because that's my second passion.

*I read about teaching, because I'm a teacher and I still have much to improve, so I want to get ideas.

i love reading! tuesdays with morrie is a great book! it teaches positivity and it changes how i view life. no matter what you face right now... i learned that it is up to you on how you react to these challenges, if you give in or if you stand up and face those challenges.

reading transports you to another world... be it adventure, history, travel. it gives you a sense of freedom! reading also has its benefits... reading broadens your knowledge, improves your grammar, language and comprehension. those who read during their younger days are least likely to develop alzheimer's disease. read on and be informed!!!
