catholicism is one of the two major branches of christianity, the other being protestantism. protestantism was founded by martin luther in the 15th century as a rebellion against what he perceived as the corruption of the then-current christian church. he wanted christianity to focus more upon the teachings of the bible rather than those that the church had built upon them. this was called the reformation. the church responded to this with the counter-reformation, which gave rise to catholicism.

the current differences are that the catholics have a far greater canon than protestantism, for instance they believe in the power of the saints, the authority of the pope, and the divinity of mother mary, none of which is written in the bible. the pope is the highest authority for theological questions. the protestants, on the other hand, tend to keep their canon far simpler, and consider the bible to be the highest authority, and that it should be interpreted individually by each person. they also tend to view religion as more of an individual, personal affair -- a personal relationship with god, while for the catholics it is more of a structured, community affair.

Catholics are part of a cult. they take aspects of christian theology and twist it to mean / do something contrary to what it actually means. They believe in purgatory, in the bible there is no such thing. They believe in infant baptism, the bible does not endorse this as G-d gives everyman a choice (freewill) as to believing in him or not. The pope is seen equal to G-d in the sense that the pope is infallible, this is outright blasphemy... to much to mention, Catholics have most of it wrong... Mary did not remain a virgin like Catholics believe, but as a Christian I do believe in the immaculate conception... If Catholics were Christians they would call themselves that, but they call themselves Catholics showing their alliance to something other than Christ. Same as the Mormons, Baptists, Protestants, Evangelicals, etc...

Catholics are a sub-group within the christians.

In this large group called "christians", there are many denominations(1).

    Most christian denominations are Lutherans(2).

Vassula Ryden (3)&(4), an orthodox catholic lady who receives messages from Jesus since 1986 tells us that all Christians will be united under one priest, that´s what we should pray for.

None. Catholics belong to one of the many Christian denominations. They are Christians because they are followers of Jesus Christ.

To put it another way, all Catholics are Christians, but not all Christians are Catholics.

The Roman Catholic Church is the largest Christian denomination in the world.

I guess Catholics follow Canon law and consider the Pope as equal to God, while other denominations don't.
