Would any atheist/agnostic agree to...?
take a leap of faith tomorrow (national day of prayer) and just give yourself an opportunity to believe, say a small prayer, and ask God to give you the insight to know what is the Truth? I mean, if you're right....if there really were no God, then no harm, no foul. But imagine if you found something that you never would have known?
Ok, ready to be slammed now.
Ok, meaningless words would, of course, be meaningless. I'm saying, as an intelligent person, knowing that there could, in fact, be merit to all these people's beliefs, give your open mind an opportunity to SEE.
And Sheeple, I admire Carl Sagan, he was an extremely intelligent man. I think he was correct about many things. One thing he wasn't, though, was infalliable.
I'll be back, thunderstorm.
OK, I'm back, no tornado <WHEW>
To functional: Absolutely, we have the final responsiblity for our actions. Especially the most important one.
To woolly: I am so glad to have a brain to reason with, and have used it to come up with at least one logical answer:
It can never be too late till I'm dead. As for have I considered the possibility that my faith (not religion, I'n not big on man-made religion)is misguided? Of course. Every human questions their own thinking from time to time. But what is the worst thing that would happen if I'm wrong? That I will be kind to my neighbor? That I might give of what little money I have to help another? That I will be a fool? It's worth the risk (although I don't see any risk anymore).
To shiroikaze and sinthyia: Apparently you once believed, why not take one more chance? I'm sorry if what you asked for didn't come to pass. It doesn't mean He doesn't care.
Campbelp: God has the power to discern even the smallest faith.
Oh, and Vixen! I will pray tomorrow just for you. I will pray that He will open your eyes, your heart, and let you see how much He loves you, His child. You know, we are ALL His children. I never understood the story of the prodigal child, why the bad kid got all the father's forgiveness and love until just a few years ago. Finally realized how arrogant I was to think I was like the good kid (WRONG). No matter what, if we come back to Him, He will rejoice! How awesome is THAT!
To Gru: you're welcome.
To Oedipus: While people mean well, I really don't believe there's a "special recipe" kind of prayer. God is not a genie, granting wishes. He wants us to talk to Him in our own words, like a best friend. Even when we're pissed, when we think He has abandoned us.
AND THANKS to everyone for not bashing me...God's love to you all...

Agnostic. I can try and believe. But u can't really make ur self believe when ur not sure if he exists or not. I can pray and ask God to give me an insight to know the truth and see if he does.

Probably not Shiba, no more than I would take a "leap of faith" and ask Odin, Ra, Ba'al, Jupiter, Jehovah or Santa Claus for that matter.
I might consider a Leap of Faith, using My own reasoning to realize that I hold ultimate responsibility for My actions as does everyone else and not try to assuage My guilt complexes.....
But then some people need a crutch to get them through life without succumbing to the urge to convert my neighbors to My way of thinking or kill My fellows for failing to agree with me then justifying it with some rationalization that it was okay to do because god (or any of the aforementioned) will somehow forgive Me…

I could do the first part, the praying part. I've been asked to do it before though, and I've done it, no problem with it. I have even been given "recipes" of what to say in the prayers. Some people have even told me about "bullet proof prayers that never fail", they've been a total flop though.
At this point of time, I only do it to please others, I'm over it already, over the idea of an interventionist god. And as GruHairy said before me "thanks for the best wishes".
Cheers, from a honest unbeliever.

I think you'll find many non-believers have studied the subject deeply (probably more deeply than believers) and have thought rationally about the whole thing.
They know prayers don't work because they have weighed up the evidence, asked intelligent questions, and applied critical thinking.
If you're asking them to say a prayer as a test to see if it works, you're too late. They've done all the testing and arrived at a logical conclusion.
Have you ever thought about it logically and asked yourself "Can this stuff I'm asked to believe by my religion possibly be true?"

What if I told you god sent me to tell you that I know the truth and that you and all the god praying people have it all wrong, that you pray for a gift, that you look for and it never comes but god would like all of you to pray for $100,000,000,000.00 every day until you get it, it will come in a plain brown bag and will be at your front door if you have one, if not it will be at your feet if you have feet, if not it will be as your side, when you receive this gift give it to the atheist and they will know what to do from there. if you believe this you are a God believer if not your are an atheist

You are under the misapprehension that most of us who don't believe in Christianity know nothing of the faith. Most of us WERE Christian at one point in time and left. We've done that one many times and zip, zero, zilch, nadda. Sorry a prayer doesn't work.

Not a prayer of a hope, for that.
Thank you though, for the best wishes, and the 2 pts

I think I will read something by Sagan, Dawkins or maybe P Z Meyers on Pharyngula

Meaningless repetition of words that you don't believe is not prayer. FYI, I am not an atheist.

Hi ya, not gonna bash you. :-)
I am a spiritual atheist. I may just read my spiritual "book" that I created for myself, or read a few non-religious inspirational quotations. :-)
'The Positive Book of Quotations' compiled by John Cook is a spiritual-send for me! :-)
