Can cats be trained to get rid of mice outside the house?

I have a female adult cat and she is really good at catching mice in the garage. The only problem is she keeps on bringing her "little trophies" inside our house and they are (most of the times) alive!. Then my husband has to do the dirty job chasing and killing the ******* mouse! I wonder if the kitty can be trained to get rid of mice outside of our home?

She's doing it so you'll be proud of her. The instinct will kick in sooner or later because it's in them already.

If you think it helps maybe you should buy her a fake mouse and teach her little by little to kill them. ;) Good Luck.

You can sort of teach her to leave it out side but it will take a long time. You would teach her the same way you'd teach a dog. You'll need a mouse for this.. Bring her with the front door with the mouse and a treat. Don't let her bring the mouse inside but as soon as she drops it give her a treat. If you do this long enough she will think that when she leaves the mouse on the door step outside she'll get that treat, of course you have to reinforce that every now and then. Also change the spot if you don't want it at the door step.

Source(s): I taught my cats to come when I called them the same way. It's been years and they still do, even without the food.

Generally cats who have a loving home and get fed well on a daily basis only catch mice for fun and to bring home as a 'gift' for their owner for looking after them. I have 7 cats and they have brought me mice loads of times, dropped it in the hallway or somewhere else and just let it run wild. Cats have a natural instinct to hunt but as someone else has said if you were getting fed everyday would you go and hunt? You can't really force your cat to catch the mice and you can't stop feeding him the only was to do it is call pest control. Good Luck.

You might consider giving her "hunting time" let her out to do her job and don't let her in till she kills it. It's going to be hard because as her family she instinctively "feeds" you like she would her kittens.
