how many parents out there know CPR?

Last friday a 9 year old was on the floor nobody knew what happened. But he was non-responsive. both his parents shook him, not knowing the detail my husband stopped them and started to check over the boy. He had no pulse, no breathing, So he and I and others changed off doing CPR till cops arrived then the paramedics. He had been down for a few minutes before we got to him. Just what to know how many people know how to save their own childs life if it came down to it.......... Today was the boys Funneral.

Update:

KUDOS to you that do i do and hope others of you will go take a class to learn

Update 2:

my certification just expired in january so i know cpr but i'm just suprised by how many people don't know anything about being a first responder.

I just haven't made it to the red cross to get re certified i have to babies under 2

I know infant and adult cpr, have 2 children and a baby in the oven. I also worked in daycare which is why I decided to keep up on these skills. That is such a sad story, but I wanted to note that even if you are trained in CPR sometimes the shock that something is wrong with your child may overcome the fact that you know how to help him/her. I know that I would be confident in my skills to save another's life but if it came down to my child I may panic at first.

I am a Red Cross instructor.

With our best efforts and the efforts of the American Heart Association and others, only about 2% of the adults are CPR certified.

This is a mixed issue. On the one hand, if people would just plain learn to call 911 IMMEDIATELY when they find someone in trouble, we would save a lot more people.

(FYI- the success rate of CPR and other techniques on an infant or child are pretty good. As the person gets older, however, the heart becomes weaker and the success rate declines.)

There are many options for learning CPR. You can sign up for a class, you can learn on-line, you can buy your own manikin for the American heart Association's website (CPR For Everyone program), etc.

Whatever technique you choose for learning (even if it is borrowing a video at the library!), I suggest that you find a way to practice on a manikin- it makes a world of difference.

Of course, I also urge you to practice in front of someone who knows how to do it right to make sure you are following the right techniques!

So sorry to hear that the young man did not make it with everyone who tried to help. I used to be an EMT, so yes I know CPR and when needed I have been a first responder many times, even though I am now considered disabled. I believe that every parent should take the course as part of their prenatal care, and that all babysitters should also know it. I have been a mom for 28 yrs, but did not become an EMT till my oldest was seven, but I had been working in a nursing home prior so I did know adult CPR back then but not child CPR.

I have known CPR since I was pregnant with my 6 year old, and I take a refresher course every year in both Infant CPR and Regular CPR. The hospital that I just had my 8 week old son at made my husband and I watch a CPR video before we left.

For parents out there who don't know CPR or took the class and don't remember, they sell CPR wallet cards with instructions. I bought mine at Target in the pharmacy section. I looked online and found a site that has a printable CPR pocket guide, and it has Adult, Child, Infant, and Animal CPR. I will put the link below.

I know Infant and Adult CPR. I was initially trained in my Junior year of HS, then I took the training from the hospital before they let me take my baby home (best mandatory class I've ever been to)

I have been certified a few times in the past, but am not current. My husband and I really need to attend a class before we get Zoe home.

I have to cut and paste this for my stubborn husband. I'm five months pregnant and I have been insisting that we go to a class...they are $25 bucks at the hospital where I will be delivering...his response was...I already know how..I don't need to go.

Aren't you supposed to get recertified every year or every couple of years?

We're totally going even if I have to drag him...lol or trick him into it during the maternity ward tour...
