Is it dangerous to sleep with earplugs in?
I work rotating shifts, and am currently having difficulties sleeping during the day. I wake very easily, even if I use OTC sleep aids. I have darkened my windows to the point the light doesn't bother me, but normal daytime noises are waking me.

I had the same question in my mind, facing similar sleeping conditions. I wake easily to light, and sound. I thought that by using earplugs I would perhaps not here my fire alarm, and risk dying from fire, or a silent attacker. Since then I have used earplugs hundreds of times to sleep, I find I can easily hear my clock alarm, smoke alarm, and most other things you would need to react to. The things it does get rid of are people talking, garbage trucks and delivery trucks, and lots of useless ambient sound. It is a little weird to get used to at first, but once you are comfortable with wearing them, you fears will subside.

I don't see any danger to sleeping with earplugs, as long as you get a soft, comfortable kind intended for sleeping. My only concern is that you test to make sure that you could hear a smoke alarm, if that goes off.

I was having alot of anxiety before sleeping and could not fall asleep. Had many many sleepless nights.
I was just playing with the program one afternoon and wanted to listen to the Power Nap track. Next thing I knew I was waking up! Fell right asleep without trying. After using the Fall Asleep track, I could fall asleep right away. But I didn't realize that I shouldn't be using that one all night. Switched to Whole Night and have been using it ever since.
I can go to sleep with ease now. I just lay and listen to the sounds and next thing I know I am waking up from a nice sleep. I don't suffer from lack of sleep anymore. I keep an IPod with earbuds next to my bed and take it ALWAYS when traveling. The earbuds help block out ambient noise and the sleep tracks keep me sleeping sound :)
Reboot your brain & sleep soundly again?

A friend of mine who was stationed in Iraq for almost 17 months had me sending him earplugs so that he could try to sleep through bombs going off around him. He liked them and they haven't had any ill effects so far. I believe that as long as they're used according to directions (i.e not pushed in too far), they shouldn't have any ill effects.
However, be aware that if they block out too much noise, they could be hazardous in other ways . . . like taking away your ability to hear smoke alarms.

Don't ever take the sleeping pills route!!
1. They will damage your liver big time and you can get into serious health problems.
2. You will get hooked up on them and you won't be able to have a normal life any more if you don't take your pills everyday.
The sleeping pills industry is damaging our health by capitalizing on our ignorance, and by distracting people from effective and natural ways to deal with this problem. I had been taking prescription sleep medications [Ambien] for over 5 years. It stopped working and I simply took more. Still did not work. Nights were very difficult - medication put me to sleep but I would wake up after 2–3 hours with a strong sympathetic response (fast pulse, pounding heartbeat, wide awake alert). It was a very difficult cycle to break. I was really in bad shape due to lack of sleep.
After years of struggling I was able to cure my insomnia naturally and pretty fast. I followed the Sleep Tracks sleep optimization program, here is their official web -site if you want to take a look: http://www.insomniacure.net/

I had to do that once when my dogs were snoring so loud that i swore it was echo'n off the walls. Just don't use the cheep yellow crap ones that are harder. There are soft foam ones that are a lot more comfortable and don't try to over expand in your ear. As long as you don't push them in too far its all good. As a tip too if you want real dark windows line the curtains in tin foil. It blocks ALL light.

I LOVE MY EARPLUGS! I buy them by the HUNDREDS! I use them not just for sleep, but they're great for concentration, meditation, focusing, reading, sleeping or just ignoring rude people!
As a limo driver I work all kinds of strange shifts.
Example: Last night I was with a group of 21 years olds partying in NYC until 8 in the morning! Last weekend I was in Atlantic City at the Borgata Casino until 10 am!
When I get home to sleep, I don't want to be bothered by phones and peddlers and car alarms and sirens, etc.
When I slide in a pair of foam ear plugs in, it's like entering a quiet room. It's awesome!
Safe? Heck yeah! I can carry on a conversation with anyone, hear the alarm, watch TV, etc. You can be sure I'd hear any emergency noises.
Only TWO drawbacks that I can think of:
1) my sweet, sexy BabyDoll of a girlfriend doesn't like them. She feels insulted/ignored/offended.
2) The quieter it gets out there, the noisier is (sometimes) gets inside your head! (No, not psychotic voices, dummy!) I mean like songs, thoughts, breathing sounds, etc.
OH! One more thing! I find that they also reduce all kinds of background noise that we usually tune out. This in turn reduces stress, promoting a greater sense and state of well-being!
STICK IT IN YOUR EAR!

Not as long as they don't get shoved far into your ears while you sleep.
Or they're poison earplugs.
