Weight is a combination of many factors: fat, muscle, bone mass, and water weight. Sugar contributes to fat and that's probably what you're really asking about.
It really depends on the type of sugar that you consume. The two main sugars are sucrose and fructose. Sucrose is found in foods like chocolates, ice cream and sodas. Fructose is found in fruit. Fructose is a much better source of sugar and can be consumed in higher quanities. I personally stay away from sucrose almost completely.

Well technically you always physically put on weight anytime you eat anything. Something as small as a few grams would be negligible, but it becomes more considerable when you eat things like big hamburgers and such. It's all just a matter of digesting it and using the energy.

What matters is how many calories you consume in a day.
If you do a bit of exercise, you can consume approx. 2000 cal.(this your body will consume in a day meaning no weight gain), if you want to loose weight you should consume less calories than your body needs , approx. 1500.
My advise is that if want a sweet go for it, but count how many calories you eat the rest of the day so you don´t go over 2000.
