Why do people think Jesus couldn't have been married?
What is the reason people think there was no way Jesus might have been married? I'm not saying I believe one way or the other, but truthfully, the idea doesn't bother me.
Why not, do you think?
I mean, I have such a really great relationship with my husband, and we're best friends. I kind of like to think of Jesus having someone like that to love him. It makes me feel like he would have felt less alone through all the pain.
Why wouldn't he?
We're missing a huge amount of Jesus' life history. We know of his birth, and then we know he moved to Egypt, and then we know he taught in the temple when he was a boy, possibly around the time of his Bar Mitzvah. From there, we know nothing until the beginning of his mortal ministry, when he was baptized, probably around the age of 30.

Where does the Bible tell us that man can serve God better alone? I agree that Jesus is the prime example of a perfect human being living in strict accordance with God's laws and word. What about God's law to multiply and replenish the earth?

If Jesus was not married, then why would anyone come up with the idea of a church pretending it is his bride? If the Catholic church can determine itself to be his "figurative" bride, why could he not have been married literally?
aiza (the pic under smc) - Don't you think that Jesus' love could be big enough to love one person as his wife, as well as everyone else as his children? Parents do it, and I believe He has a far greater capacity for love.
Quixotic Cowboy (with the clever picture) - He required the same sacrifice of his apostles, some of whom were married. Later, they were all killed, like he was. Do you think he would ask them to walk down a path he wasn't willing to tread himself?
mymusiccreator - Please don't assume you know how I think and feel about Jesus Christ. You couldn't be further off the mark.
oops, I meant mymusicbreak. I've got creator on the brain.
hahastupid - Or maybe they would have just left that out of the Bible. . .?

Please cite the scripture where we are told that Jesus is married to the church. I have never read such a thing. I believe what you are referring to is part of Catholic dogma. Also, please could you cite the scripture where Jesus spoke of those that give up marriage for the sake of the Kingdom of God. I have never read that either, and am wondering if it is also a part of Catholic dogma. Similarly, can you share with me the scripture that tells us that our marriage to our spouse is how we give all our love to God?
I don't mean to dispute everything you have said. I just have never read any of what you are claiming as truth in any scripture. I appreciate your insights, and would love to have the scripture references to back them up.
cdf-rom - Thanks for the prayers. I am a Christian. I love Jesus Christ more than you know. I am sorry you feel that you are in a position to judge me and my relationship with my Savior.
I do not believe as you do. I believe that much of what you had to say is tragically misguided, however I respect your zeal and devotion to Christ. Please understand that the things I believe, I believe with the same passion and zeal as you do yours. I wish you could respect my beliefs as I do yours.
The fact that I am open to ideas that are not clearly explained by scripture seems to bother you quite a lot. I am sorry to have upset you. Until your answer, all of the others were presented in a conversational tone. I did not intend to upset you. Please accept my apologies.

i think that you have a good point I've read a lot of scripture in my life the one thing i can say for certain is that the bible leaves a lot of room for interpretation it is not written now as it was in the beginning it has been translated so many times over the years that is why there are so many versions while the king james version is the most popular version now it hasn't always been the bible was written and translated by MAN not the lord himself the new and old testaments often contradict each other
i think short of being there one cannot say whether or not Jesus was married
i like you am best friends with my husband and think everyone especially Jesus deserves that kind of companionship
as for all the naysayers, you are entitled to your opinions too

Christ being a Jew at that time and a teacher or Rabbi would not have been single. It stands to reason he would have been married. Speculation was and is that his bride of choice was Mary Madgelaine. she was the most prominent women figure other than his mother in his life. It makes him no less of a perfect person just married. There is a great deal missing from the Bible. The Bible as we know it was put toegether by one mane Constintine and thoses books were chosen for the most part for political and popular reasons. Who knows what else we could have know if all were included. Of course this is all speculation. I am no scolar and a horrible speller !! It is my hope however, that Christ did live on threw a bloodline in a family I have come to supose would be the Sinclair Family. Who knows?? I guess only God himself!.

what if Jesus would have been married?
the masses would have worshipped his wife and his child which is the same reason y Jesus never baptised anyone.
Jesus was not meant to multiply, even though the Bible says we should. Jesus was meant to be a sacrifice. temptation and marraige would have dstacted Him from what he was supposed to do.
the church as the bride and Jesus as the husband shows how close our relationship is to Christ. it doesn't mean that every Christian on the planet nor Jesus had to be married. even in the Bible it says that marriage isn't for everyone.
Yes, because Jesus took up human form He had every right to luv someone and to have children. but again, it doesn't make sense for Jesus to start a family when He knew that he was gonna die at the age of 30.
again, just because His disciples got married doesn't mean that Jesus should get married. the disciples were striving to be like Him, not vice versa.
the last supper was just a painting and just because she was sittin at the table doesn't mean that they were married. the catholic church said that she was a disciple which makes more sense at why she was at the table then they were married. the Bible did say he spent that night with his disciples. Jesus probably did kiss mary if she was a disciple, but that doesn't mean that they were having sex. Jesus kissed all His disciples as a sign of greeting
i'm sure the jewish tradition does state that rabbis were to be married. need i remind u Jesus was no ordinary teacher. He had absolute and dirrect access to God, something that most rabbis didn't have. i'd like to see a rabbi be cruxified and rise again in three days. on top of that he wasn't even a rabbi by trade. Jesus was a carpentar. God spoke to the disciples heart when Jesus came near them to follow him and ask for his teaching.
the Divinci Code also states that Jesus had a royal blood line. again this couldn't be tru. if Jesus and Mary were married then they both would be worshipped by the masses. this would have meant extra money for Judas( Jesus' betrayer). She would have been stoned and their child the same.
now, no matter how much doctrine the Catholic church says they burned they would have never been able to fully destroy the truth. God would have found a way for this to be revealed to the point where most Christians would know by now. there is no proof backin up the Da Vinci Code and even the author admitted a few years before it even started such a controversy that it was pure fiction. the Da Vinci Code has been out for years. i don't see why people are takin a sudden interest just because they decide to make a movie out of a good story. so good that people who never believed in what we taught think they finally have a good come back. simply because he-said-she-said-i-heard-he-said. i know ur not probably lookin for an answer and just lookin for people to agree with u like most people r on Yahoo! when they post questions about Christianity and Atheism. i'm not tryin to be rude and i'm not tryin to convert u to whatever religion in this world. i'm not even lookin for u to agree because i know u won't. please feel free to believe whatever u like. if u have anymore questions feel free to ask them.=)

Jesus was aware of having a mission to fulfil on earth, which included dying on the Cross. He was well aware of this. There have already been other movies, etc., prior to the davinci code, about Jesus being tempted to abandon His mission and live an ordinary life on earth. But Jesus made His life a conscious walk of obedience to the Father.
His relationship with the Father was greater, deeper and better than any mere earthly relationship could have been. (Jesus spoke of the glory that He shared with the Father before the world was made. We are also told in Scripture that 'eye has not seen, nor has ear heard, nor has entered into the imagination of man the things in store for those who love God.' You can look up those references with a concordance, if you want to. I will leave that up to you.) This is one reason why He did not seek an earthly wife.
Secondly, Jesus was seeking a heavenly wife, so to speak. The Church is called the Bride of Christ. We are told in Scripture that the marriage relationship was intended to foreshadow the relationship between Christ and the Church; not the other way around. In Heaven we will enjoy a new and better kind of relationship with Jesus. He is not missing out on anything significant till then. You can also look up the Bible references to the Church as the Bride of Christ in a concordance, if you want to.
Finally, Jesus was abandoned by the Father on the Cross, which was necessary for Him to bear our sins and experience the same kind of separation from God that we would if we were condemned to hell forever. No human wife could make up for that loss and pain. But He bore it for love of us.
You seem like a very sympathetic person, but your question suggests to me that you do not quite believe that Jesus was Himself Divine, God in the flesh, the second Person of the Trinity; you seem to think that He was just a poor human who was misunderstood and was in the wrong place at the wrong time.
He does not need our sympathy. WE NEED His SYMPATHY !!!
Our sin is real, and God is real, and God graciously came Himself to wipe out our sin, which we could never have done for ourselves.
Although you intend to be caring and compassionate toward Him, He does not need it. It is demeaning and insulting to Him (thought I know you did not mean it that way.)
Jesus really is LORD. One woman could never be enough for Him, no matter who she was, no matter how holy she may have been.
Jesus loves each one of us and wants to fulfil each one of us in a way that only He can. He made us and knows what is best for us. Why not put your life into His hands? He is trustworthy. That way, you-- yes, YOU, YOURSELF! will someday be a part of His heavenly bride! And that relationship will outshine any love you have ever had or ever will have on earth.
This may not be the kind of answer you were expecting. But it is the true answer, the right answer, and will lead you into eternal life. I pray that you and your husband-- and your whole family-- will understand, and turn to Jesus, turning away from whatever you have been turning to, and live the life that is real life. I pray this in Jesus' Name, for His glory and for your benefit.

Why would Jesus, a Jew, not marry? According to the precepts that guided the Jews of that era, Jewish men who were considered to be adequately trained for teaching, and the term is Rabbi, would be married. IF a man was neutered, as Jesus might have been by inference of Matt.19, then of course he would not have married. But neither would he have been considered for the role position of Messiah, as the Messiah is prophecied to marry and raise children, in fulfilment of the Instruction of Gen: To be fruitful and multiply implied marriage. Of course, Dan Brown writing his story , Fiction mind you, implies that Jesus and Mary Magdalene were married and had a child. The problem with fiction, is that you can create any scenario you choose...and thats exactly what the four different gospel writers did...each created his own Fiction around the fictional character of Jesus. A close study of the various gospel accounts reveals the incredible contradictions each of the Gospel writers committed in his version and mind you, they even copied from one another, Mark supposedly being the first gospel... Research scholars have, however, deemed that the authors of Pauls letters were probably written earlier than the Gospels...and that is indicated by the lack of any Birth narative in Paul's letters. The matter stands, that in terms of communication, Paul and Jesus never met in person, and Paul's three versions of his theophany on the Damascus road is altered in each of Paul's different versions of that Vision experience. One might say, Paul told each audience what he thought was expediant for selling his new religion gospel...but the fact is, there is no evidence whatsoever, much to the embarrasment of all Christian Apologists, of a historical person named Jesus. But you pays your money and get what you can. Con. Sincerely

Jesus has all of us as His spouse. The Church is the Bride and Christ is the Groom. Jesus Himself says Heaven is a wedding banquet.
Jesus spoke of those that give up marriage for the sake of the Kingdom of God. Jesus I believe was one of those.
Here is some of my reasoning. Christian marriage is a source and sign of God's grace through our spouse. Truly all our love is meant to be given to God. However, God instituted marriage as a very special way that man or woman could give that love to God through another person. He also created sex and it is a very strong physical bond. He said that the two become one flesh. The two become one. All of these things that marriage hold are to hold your spouse up closer to the love of God. To bring the other closer to Heaven.
Jesus spoke of those that gave up marriage because marriage is not necessary to give your love to God. Surely in marriage, your spouse is a conduit, but in a celibate life you 'marry' God directly. You'll even see wedding bands on the hands of most celibates like nuns, sisters, and priests. They feel they are married.
Christ did not need to have a companion so that He would not feel alone. He was constantly in the presence of the Father. He was in constant communion with the Father and had a direct and uninhibited line of love from the Father. Jesus did not need a spouse to be a source and sign of God's grace. Jesus Himself was the source and sign of God's grace.
Marriage is an interesting thing in how it models the Trinity. The Father loves the Son perfectly and completely and the Son likewise. And their love is so real it is the third person of the Trinity, the Holy Spirit. So too, a husband and wife love each other in such a real way that their love brings life forth. Two become one in a child. Jesus was already a part of the Trinity, the analogy was not meant for Him.
I think that it is fitting on both sides of the coin that Jesus was not married. He had God the Father in complete communion. He had talked often how the bridegroom was coming. Paul spoke of it as well. Even the whole Bible front to back reads like a wedding story. God courting us and finally in Heaven we join the wedding feast. Christ is our groom. We receive Him just a bride receives her husband.
He did not marry one woman because He is meant to marry all of us, the Church.
And if anyone had given everything for the Kingdom of Heaven it was Christ. So when He said some give up marriage for the sake of the Kingdom, it had a strong liklihood to apply to Him as well.
I hope that helped a bit. I am bringing forth small bits and pieces of theology that Christians have believed and trusted in for centuries. Remember that our society is very fadish and moves toward whatever is provacative. It is good to question, but not at the cost of turning a blind eye to the overwhelming historical support. Peace.

I agree with you - what's so horrible about the idea of a married messiah?
I guess it comes down to centuries of misogyny - orthodox jews (male, of course) praise God every morning in their prayers that they were not born women.
In the catholic church, for centuries it was taught that the most sanctified state a man could achieve was to be celibate - married was acceptable only because it was better to be married and have controlled sex withing marriage than to fornicate outside marriage or to mas.turbate. Women didn't count anyway, being lesser beings than men.
I guess since most everyone thought women were inferior, barely more than children or slaves, the idea of the saviour being married was just too unpalatable.
I actually read that it would rather seem weird to assume that Jesus WASN'T married. According to the bible he lived a god-fearing and law-abiding life til he was 30 and started preaching. Well, any jewish boy who grew up decently raised was married in their late teens, EVERYONE of them. Not to get married would have been so strange that it would have certainly been mentioned and excused somehow. But there is no mention of it.
Well, just my 2 cents worth.

Just because the bible doesn't say it doesn't mean it wasn't true. What did Jesus do when he was young. His daily actions aren't chronicled in the bible? So YES the bible does leave things out of the story of Jesus.
But more importantly, Marriage is a sacrament and one of the most important things to religious humans. God supposedly sent his only son here to teach him what it means to be human. Why wouldn't he want to experience marriage? To me, it seems strange that he wasn't married.

I haven't read the bible thorouly so I'm not so sure it it was stated there that Jesus was never been married. But I don't want to question that because I have a strong belief that Jesus was never been married because he is God and his love is for everyone. Not just for an individual.

Gods word says man can better serve God alone. Jesus is the prime example of a perfect human being living in strict accordance with Gods laws and word. In part, it shows Jesus was not tempted by lust.
