Why are these people so un-American?

"[The President] is once again releasing American military might on a foreign country with an ill-defined objective and no exit strategy."

"If we are going to commit American troops, we must be certain they have a clear mission, an achievable goal, and an exit strategy."

"I cannot support a failed foreign policy. History teaches us that it is often easier to make war than peace. This administration is just learning that lesson right now. The President began this mission with very vague objectives and lots of unanswered questions. A month later, these questions are still unanswered. There are no clarified rules of engagement. There is no timetable. There is no legitimate definition of victory."

"Well, I just think it's a bad idea. What's going to happen is they're going to be over there for 10, 15, maybe 20 years"

"My job as majority leader is be supportive of our troops, try to have input ... not to march in lock step with everything the president decides to do."

Update:

How dare these people say such un-American things in a time of war?

All of these un-American people should be ashamed of themselves and should be voted out of office, don't you agree?

Update 2:

Well...

It appears that three people got it.

The speakers are as follows:

Rick Santorum

Karen Hughes (speaking for GW Bush)

Tom Delay

Joe Scarborough

and Trent Lott.

Thanks to all who recognized it. I wonder how many people will fail to read this far and continue to not recognize the context.

As far as my fellow friends on the left go, make sure you maintain that attitude when we take over in '06 & '08.

Hail freedom of speech.

All those quotes were from republicans in the 90's after Clinton ordered the invasion of Bosnia, or wherever it was. They weren't un-American then, but they certainly are "flip-floppers" now!

I like Interested's answer. Just change democrat to republican.

Respect for the country and the office of the President has fallen in the last several decades to a point where it had become the target of all sorts of off-the-cuff comments. Most of these people would never be heard from, but the media seems to be giving credence, or at least air time, to every disgruntled politician and minor public official.

The media had gone beyond poor reporting and entered into the borders of bad taste. Everything must be dissected and commented upon until the event becomes a mere series of opinions. They have flooded the airways with news and then to justify their existence, comment on it as if it were the Rose Bowl Parade or the Superbowl.

What happened to just reporting the facts and leaving the opinions out of it. Opinions belong in commentaries, not the general news stream. Without a venue for these people to regurgitate their opinions, most would never be heard from in the first place. Give me the details and the facts, I can form my own opinions. Have some respect for the viewer, we're not idiots that need lead down the path to enlightenment.

    I am getting mixed messages!

There is no such thing as a war on terrorism. Col Hackworth called it ""And what the hell is terrorism, anyway? It's not a thing; it's not a place; it's not a person. It is a political and military strategy, that's all. Having a 'War On Terrorism' is as ridiculous as having a 'War on Flanking Maneuvers'. You'll end terrorism when there's no longer anything for anybody to get pissed off about."

The majority leader is not a puppet for the president, he is part of the checks and balances. He is doing his job, and that does not make him unamerican! I don't think you have a clue what that means. i suspect that everyone who disagrees with you is un American!!. Hackworth had a saying for that, as he did with most Generals he called perfume princesses. He said : ""And as for those government bozos who say that those who question their plans and motives is unpatriotic and aiding the enemy, well, they can just kiss my a_s."

Bush is clearly off his rocker and has done things that Joseph McCarthy would not have thought of doing! He is a whack job on the loose! He would have lasted about 15 minutes in Vietnam!

    LOL

You mean good ol' patriotic Tom Delay? I find it ironic he said that & got away with it when it had to do with our involvement in the Balkans(while Clinton was president). Yet, if someone says it today in regards to Iraq & Bush, they're called unpatriotic. A little hypocritical, wouldn't you say?

Delay's excuse for avoiding Vietnam: Minorities had taken all those good paying army jobs. There was no room for a patriotic American like myself.

I can't stand a chicken hawk wrapping themselves in the flag while never once attempting to join up.

Umm, a "War on Terror" is like the "War on Drugs". It isn't technically a "war" that you can watch in your video games. Firepower doesn't win it.

Why don't you listen to those patriots you were so fond of quoting instead of Ann Coulter?

Free speech and the freedom to question what are government is up to and asking for redress when they're screwing up is the American way.

"To announce that there is to be no criticism of the President, to stand by him right or wrong, is both unpatriotic and servile and morally treasonous to the American public." - Teddy Roosevelt

I'm no American but I think that stuff all just sound practical so I guess it is only "un-American" to have a different view if you are a facist. Maybe you should protect your freedom by putting all these people who would dare think differently into Prison Camps. Now that would make you really free.

    D'oh!

Look, boobie, the role of Congress is to represent the PEOPLE. The President, despite the delusions of that tin-plated wanker Dubya Bush, is NOT an elected king.

Wise up, and read the effing Constitution.

You seem to have missed an important point....The President took us into war in a very unAmerican and sinister way- by lying and misleading the country into war.

Now there are over 2500 dead Americans with 50,000 plus injured and counting.

DISSENT IS NOT UNPATRIOTIC!!!!!! it is our civic duty as american citizens to question our leaders when we believe that they have made a wrong decision. that is your right to believe that they should be voted out of office, but it is their right to go against the president. free speech is guaranteed in the bill of rights, but it is people like this who believe the bill of rights is mostly just a guideline that are bringing this country down. exercise your rights as a citizen of America and end these injustices now.

oh, and interested, the majority leader is a republican, not a troop-stabbing democrat as you so eloquently put it

  • 1 decade ago

Be careful labeling people as un-American. As Americans we all have the right to dissent, exercising that right is not un-American it is what this country is about. If you want to blindly follow every decision this administration makes, go for it, but it sure as hell doesn't make you a better American.
