My catalytic converter needs to be replaced...?
I drive a year 2000 BMW 3-series (specifically a BMW 316i SE 1.9L E46 Petrol) and the catalytic converter needs to be replaced. The acceleration is dead and the revs max out at 4,000rpm. The garage has quoted me £760 (inc VAT) to fit one, is that stupidly expensive or am I just going to have to cough up the money?

Is this quote from a main dealer? Get a used cat from a scrap yard (check yellow pages - there's loads of them around) it doesn't mean there's anything wrong with it, chances are the car's been written off but the bits will all be good. Then get quotes from other garages and/or mobile technicians to fit it for you.

See if you can remove the converter yourself. Then find a steel pipe about 3 feet long that you can ram through the converter.
Try and break up the inside and unclog it. Keep doing it until you have completely hollowed out the inside. You might need a small sledge hammer to help pound the pipe or steel rod that you use.
Once you've unclogged it, reinstall it. You will be fine. I've done this procedure many times. It works great.

Actually the price is fair. The price of palladium is quite high. The problems you describe are true signs of a clogged catalytic converter. Personally I wouldn't go with a used one or bang the crap out of the old one, either way you may not be legal for the street.
Good luck.

That price sounds about right, if I did the currency conversion correctly. Symptomatically, it also sounds correct.
In the U.S the cat converter has an 8 year, 80,000 mile federal imposed warranty on it. I don't know what the warranty is where ever your at, but I'd check into it.
Good Luck!

If you want the car to be 'original spec' then yes, sounds about right. If however you just need it done a generic part could be fitted at your local 'Kwik Fit' for about half that.
Timax & Bosal should do something.
