Well, all the answers about being proud of our country etc are all right and good. But if you think about it. What is one of the problems that America has to deal with?...illegal immagrants. Why? Because other people from other countries KNOW that we have it good here. Lots of freedoms, Lots of privelages, Lots of rights, Lots of governmental support, Lots of good people, Lots of good food, and I could go on forever. This country is a very easy country to be jealous of. Yes, we have our share of problems, but the foundations of what this country was built on have not been moved....and these things I've mentioned and the foundations of a great country is worth wanting a slice of. The American people KNOW this too. This is what all of us are so proud of and we know it.
Yes, American Pride!...that is what we mean. We know what we have and are proud of it!

Yeah, what is the big deal? What have we done lately of which to be proud? I think we did well in World War 2, and some good things after that, but I really don't know what we have to brag about now. There are some really beautiful landscapes, though.

Search me, they sometimes seem to show little of it... but pardon me, I'm being "political" and digressing from the real intent of your question: SUPPOSEDLY, Americans are "proud" of their pioneer heritage, having built a nation of "united states" from coast to coast - "sea to shining sea" & and they are proud to be part of a nation that assures "inalienable human rights" standing as a "vandguard" and "beakon of hope" to the rest of the world. We. Americans, are proud [should be?] of our 'melting pot' diversity - revealing in it with it's many blessings... and the supposed tolerance & acceptance that goes with all of that...
We are supposed be "righteous" about or forefather's wishes to maintain STRICT separation of "church & state"... There are to be NO "theocracies" for US! And I say "HERE, HERE! LET"S HOPE THAT NEVER CHANGES!" (But there are those now who would be "presumptuous" enough to challenge that secular soverienty... Oh,Oh, Sorry, I'm becoming "political" again.).
At any rate, American Pride used to be tied to any number of good & wonderful "virtues..." i.e., fair play, looking out for the little guy, sharing, caring, the "golden" rule... love & understanding.... Where all that's gone is beyond my kin: Perhaps it is now buried (temporarily? - one can hope) under what used to be the "9 - 11" rubble and the constant "fear mongering" from the present administration... maybe one day, America will get back to its roots... ones that were nobler, albeit 'idealistic' (but what's WRONG with that?)- but definately "Grapes-of-Wrath" altruistic. Now, however, American Pride looks more like American boastful arrogance in the face of difficult times... but that's just my take on things... I grew up in simpler, more "innocent" (naive?) times... when Tom Sawyer "raft-building" amd a Norman Rockwell existence were the "order of the day."
America could still be a force for good in this world, but there are some who's avarice for power and that ever-present human failing of GREED, have mangled & twisted the "American Way."

I tried to explain it to a European who didnt get it either until the world cup rolls around. US is still basically a new country compared to others and we are proud of our hard work and our success. National pride is evident all around this country not strictly only US, you can see immigrant families in this country waving the flag of their home country everywhere.

We are proud of our country and what it stands for. Freedom, Unity, and Liberty. Could you imagine if Europe United like the United States, what a great place it would be. Our strength lies in the whole world, because our country is made up of the whole world. I am proud to be American - Diversity at its best.

My definition comes from being a part (very small part) of those who served to make this country great. My grandfather served in WWI, my dad and his brother served in WWII, my brother served in Veitnam and it screwed him up, My cousin was in Vietnam and received a purple heart. I am proud of these people and proud of the country they fought for. They didn't serve because they "had to" they served because they wanted to. Because they loved America. The flag is much more than fabric to me. I am proud to be an American.

It seems natural for people to be proud of their town if it offers them a happy life. It seems natural for people to be proud of their state if it offers them a happy life. It sometimes gets out of control when people are proud of their country.
