Anyone else's cat have this paw problem?

Its on his back right paw beteen his paw pad and toes. It's kinda raw and smells bad. I assume thats an infection but Im curious if anyone is familiar with this. I will be taking him to the vet if it doesnt clear up or gets worse. So far I wash it, dab a little peroxide and neosprion on it. Anyone have experience with this sorta thing? Just curious what it is or caused it. Its gross but Im thinking maybe feces.

Update:

I have washed it well. It looks clean but its definently raw. He is strickly inside and there isnt anything in it. fortunately his paw is white so I can see it pretty good. I guess the vet is probably my best bet. Thanks!!!

It's probably from his litter. If it's clumping litter it can get caught in there especially if their paw was wet from urine. The clay hardens and rubs and it gets infected. I would take him to the vet. If it is smelling bad then the infection might be worse than expected. Keep it really clean until you can get them to a vet for an antibiotic.

Your should call your vet immediately if you suspect infection. Here is a solution you can try. If it's being caused by irritation from the cat litter, it may help.

Mix two tablespoons of 2 percent chlorhexidine (an antiseptic available in drugstores) in a gallon of cool, clean water. Soak the paw for 10 to 15 minutes. If your cat, like most cats, doesn't hold still for this, you can soak a cloth and hold that on the paw. Repeat the treatment 2 or 3 times a day, Since cats lick and chew on their paws, neosoprin would not be a good idea.

I don't use clay based litter with my cat, the dust is carcinogenic and the clumping kind can clump inside their intestinal tract. I use "The World's Best Cat Litter", which is safe even for cats who are recovering from declawing surgery. It is corn based, biodegradable, safe even for septic tanks. And it controls odor pretty well. It is available at pet stores and is expensive, but a bag lasts about a month.

Source(s): it is what my vet recommended when my cat had a sore paw.

I know its tough because they hate water, but try washing it in warm water... put some peroxide on it, not neosporin cause that is a gelly like substance that will make the cat slip, or track litter or dirt onto the cut... and if it doesnt clear up in a day or 2, VET because a smell is a sign of an infection

  • Does it hurt him for you to touch it?

    Is he having trouble walking?

Is his leg hot or very warm?

    Signs of an infection.

It may be dried blood...or it could be a FOX TALE if he goes outside...

a fox tale will burrow in and go deep causing an infection...

IT might be dried feces that has stuck to his foot...

Soak cotton in the peroxide and hold it gently to the area in question....let it, do that...you can see it better...

YES it stings but it will start to soften blood.

IF the cotton you use turns pink it could be dried blood...

IF it is brown it might be feces.

    Use also warm water.

Either way it needs to be cleaned away.

To see what it is and see what to do next.

IF there is a wound take the cat to a vet...

IF it is feces, well just clean it up.

I had a cat rip off a toenail and his paw smelled like body odor (blamed my bf for 2 days) I used antibiotic cream and put an e collar on him to keep from licking, cream absorbs quicker. it could be itchy and so he is licking and making it raw. so cortaid might be needed. I would try that for a couple days as long as it doesn't get worse.

It does sound like an infection but peroxide can do more damage than good. You need to take your cat to the vet. It may need antibiotics to clear up the infection and vet will provide appropiate cream/ ointment if it needs it
