Lumbar Fusion?
Has anyone ever had lumbar fusion surgery? I am supposed to have this done at L5/S1 and they said they will use screws to correct. Am curious how this will be.

I have not had this done, but I am a physical therapist. The exact technique is usually dependent on the surgeon. I think most surgeons are getting away from the bone graft (as the donor site caused more problems than the surgical site) and focusing on pedicle screws or titanium rods that run from one vertebrae to the other. The pedicle screws are placed through the pedicle which is a pillar like structure on the vertebrae. The purpose of this type of procedure is to either A: stabilize an unstable segment (as in spondylolisthesis) or B: maintain the integrity of the joint space in people who have a degenerative disc (to allow more room for the nerve so it is not compressed upon standing).
