my laptop is running really slow i have run a defrag disc cleaner spy wear and anti virus but it is still slow

You should have an anti-spyware solution on your computer. I recommend that you go to http://www.download.com/ and get AD-AWARE and SpyBot Search & Destory. Install, run, update and scan your computer with both programs.

This double whammy will help keep you safe and running faster.

Check your Virtual memory settings. Right click on MY COMPUTER. Then pick PROPERTIES. Click on the ADVANCED tab and then click on the PERFORMANCE button. This will show you how much of your hard drive will be used for Virtual memory if you need any.

For the best performance, BUY MORE RAM. Look up your computer at http://www.coastmemory.com/ and get the MAX.

There are several general reasons for a PC/laptop going slow. These include:

hard disk errors or minor faults (these do not register either of these utilities).

It could be time to rebuild laptop. laptop registries, dll's and many other things can get cloged up at times.

It could be your user profile or nt user.dat. Easy ways to tell is to look at the size of them.

Look at cleaning down temp files. it is also a good idea to delete the local settings folder and contents from user profile. Ensure you have no mail archives in there first.

remove used or unwanted programs.

Increase virtual memory.

It could be the laptop is no longer up to the job. This can be improved by buying more ram.

Also look at task manager there could be a memory or cpu hog. These include peer to peer programs like dc++ or antivirus like norton. Once discovered uninstall the app and reinstall normally fixes the issue.

Also check event veiwer for any errors.

User registry cleaning programs some are good some will stop the pc booting up or vital prgorams working. Some include spyware.

Sometimes you have a lot of programs running that you don't even know is running. What you can do is to press Ctrl, Alt and Delete on your key board all at the same time and a Task Manager window will pop up, then click on the tab that says Processes, where you will see the programs that are running. Look under the title that says user name and you will see which ones are running under your name and the ones that are running by the system. Don't do anything with the ones that says system. You can delete the ones that has your name that you are not using. Sometimes they are programs that are still running even after you think you have closed them. You just click on the one you want to close and click on End Process and it will close it. Do that for each one you want to close. When you are done, just close that window. Also, when you are on the internet, click on tools, internet options, a window will pop up and there will be tree tab in the middle, click on the one that says settings, then click on view files, a list of files will show up, delete them by click on them one at a time then just hit delete. There can be a lot of little areas of your computer, which can cause it to slow down and can be improved if you clean it up. Wish you all the best.

after a while even on a clean laptop,windows can become slugish and slow,you jave defragged,cleaned out unused files,run disc cleanup,and its still slow

this can be due to obsolete registry entries,registry info from old and removed programs which is still in the registry cuasing it to tighten up the rest of the current entries,and making windows suffer,with slow performance

use a registry mechanic or a registry defragger,but beware of cheap programs,this is were its worth paying a few quid for a good registry cleaner/defragger,try downloading registry mechanic(http://www.pctools.com/registry-mechanic/)

you still have a virus. You should but Pest Patrol and Webroot Spy Sweeper. Remember, you get what you pay for in life.

You may need more memory, I reccomend 512mb or higher, also check your startup programs. If you have a ton of icons near the lower right hand side by your clock, you need to disable them. You should see a major improvement.

You could have virus's and spyware from using Internet Explorer, if you can try to do a clean install of XP and just use Firefox instead of Internet explorer, you will no longer have problems.

Restart in safe mode. Run them all again, might be a bug you can't get while you have a bunch of programs running.

U MAY JUST NEED A FRESH INSTAL.. TRY REFORMATING THE COMPUTER. DONT JUST USE A DISK RESTORE U MAY NEED TO COMPLETLY REINSTALL WINDOWS. WHAT VERSION OF ANTI VIRUSE ARE U USEING? AND WHAT ANTI VIRUS PROGRAM ARE U USEING
