The concept is a bit like a memory palace: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Memory_palace

I'm assuming you're talking about meditation mandalas, here. You generally start from the edge and go inward to the center, depending on what the symbolism is. Each level symbolizes a different part of the universe. When you've assimilated the meaning of one section -- when you're one with that part of the universe -- you can move on to the next. The end will be enlightenment, or, at least, the perfect peace of mind to put you in a receptive state for it.

The problem is, if you're doing it correctly, you should only be focusing on one point at a time -- and it could take HOURS. You definitely get retinal burn-in.

For another neat example of the universe-in-a-box thing is the Kabbalah: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kabbalah#Kabbalistic_...

I have a book on that but have far to many books to read.

What little I rember of the practice is something like meditation. you go around the labyrith and stop at certain points and medatate on the meaning of that point.

There are books out that deal with the meaning of them.study and learn.

I'm not an expert, but I believe its used to raise massive amounts of energy, enough to give every person involved an abundance of energy to do whatever work you need to do in a period of waking time. They also found the brain is organized in such a design. A powerful tool.
