Can cats die from being sad or suffer from depression?
There's lots of stray cats where i live, and they keep breeding, well one of them i got all 5 of the kittens into new loving homes (the kittens are only about 5 weeks, but they eat solid food) Well that was yesterday, and now today, i let the momma cat in to visit her baby cuz i kept 1 of them, and she started feeding it and nursing it. well after like 5 minuts she acted like she wanted to go back outside, so i let her back out, and now she is siting outside my door just crying cuz she wants her babies back. and now i'm sad cuz i dont' know what to do, if i give her back her baby, then it will risk being ran over, or someone else may snatch it and i'll never see it again. but i really want the momma to be happy, i can't keep her in my house, cuz i have 1 big male cat that doesn't get along with her (i locked him in the bathroom when i let her in). So i'm wondering if this will have any affects on her such as deppresion, and if she can die from being sad. thanks.
i don't know if anyone that answered is still reading this, but i can't spay her because i can't afford it and the big male cat i have is already neutered, he just doesn't like other cats. he stays far away from the kitten. but he doesn't like other adult cats coming into "his territory"

Cats can not die from being sad, but they can suffer from depression. Even though you have let the mother cat in to see her baby and let her nurse it, when she went outside again she is not crying of depression or sadness, she is calling out to her other kittens. Is there a way at all that you could keep the mother cat outside of your house, like in the shed or garage so that she can be with her baby.
The mother cat will stop nursing the kitten soon and will leave her be. I hope you enjoy your new kitten and that your older male cat will become friends with the kitten.
Thank you for taking in the stray kittens and finding them loving homes to go to, as many people would not care what would have happened to them.
Best of luck

CAll the vet and ask if there is any group that can come and catch momma cat and have her fixed at their expense. I live in northeast PA and there is a group in Allentown, pretty far from me, that actually came up to Hazleton and did that. They caught a bunch of strays took them back, fixed them and brought them back. They even dropped off food for the cats. Where I live is an organization called PA Pets that fixes kitties for a few dollars. The raise $ by doing flea markets and bake sales ect. If the vet doesn't know of any, see if there is a toll free help line phone # in the white pages of the phone book and call them. Or do a search on the computer.

Puppies can die of depression, I had one do so once. I don't see why cats wouldn't. I'm a pushover for strays too. I had a big fat Garfield size kitty and when I found another stray he hated it at first. I made them stay inside with each other and within a day and a half they got along. I would try to get them together for a while (overnight at least), and see what happens. I would also make sure that the mama kitty isn't still producing milk without her kittens to feed. If she is I would imagine that it could be painful for her.

Can't you keep the mother and her kitten separate in the house? Do you have an unneutered male?
If you have never had a pregnancy you probably can't understand her need to nurse her kitten it's hormonal if nothing else. The others were much too young to be adopted out. I would not keep her from her kitten.
As a young woman teaching for the Army in France, my landlord drowned his cat's kittens at birth. That was the way they practiced birth control. Later, when I became a mother I realized how cruel this was for the mother cat whose whole being was invested in completing her job of birthing and nuturing her kittens.

I dont know if she can die from being sad, but it can hurt her. It's probably not a good idea if the kittens have been houserisen, they wouldn't know how to live in the wild, even with their mother. I would suggest regular visits with the kittens, or even adopting the mother. If the other cat continues to be mean, they will avoid eachother, its just jealousy and the cat nature. She probably wont die from depression, but think if someone took your baby away and you never saw her. :[ Good luck!

aw. that is so sad!!!! my best friend could tell u the perfect answer i bet. she loves cats too. let me know if u don't find any good advice, i'll ask her....
i think u'r doing the right thing letting her in to visit. lock that mean cat up. that won't kill him. might make him meaner but the girl cat's can just continue ignoring him. when i had a cat. i had the Sister & Rambo. then the kittens. all in my room. my dad took em one day to the shelter. put the baby 's in a box in the back of the truck n my 2 big cats were going too. well my dad just carried them separately. when Sister saw Rambo jump out and her kittens in the box with her. she didn't even try to jump out. my dad closed the box n she went with them. i think they're ok. i kept the runt, Killer and Rambo came home. i think they missed their mom & brothers n sisters. they never brought any other girl cats around. hehe. good luck. n let her visit. that's the best idea.

It's normal for a mother cat to be upset after her kittens are weaned and in new homes. If there's ANY way you can, get this mamma kitty spayed so she (and you) don't have to go through more litters of feral kitties. Keep an eye on her and see if she keeps eating, give her plenty of attention. Most of all, try to find her a good forever home. :) You've got a good heart.

I do know that animals, not just cats, can grive. I have a small dog and when we go away for a few days and leave him with my daughter, he doesn't eat. I have taken babies from animal mothers and they will grieve, look and meow for them. I do believe that an animal can be so attached to something or someone that they can actually grieve themeselfs to death. The momma cat will slowly forget the kittens and the one you kept will keep her busy until she weans it. Pops
Not likely but it could happen.

She won't die but you should try to find her a good home and get her spayed . We used to live in the country and we did this for many cats of course they had a free spay neuter program there.

Try giving the mama cat and her baby away to someone that wants 2 cats then they will both be happy
