Question for people who show dogs.?

What do you use when you have an early ring time (say around 8-9am) and have to be in groups (around 3-4pm) and you have a dog who is "fading"? I have tried pedalyte, gatoraide, letting him sleep, playing with him just before groups, herbal supplements, vitamins, etc. It is such a long day for him. We are fine if we have our first ring time around lunch or after but the early morning - and I have groom dogs so I have him on the table as early as 6am. Any tips or suggestions?

Try Nutri-cal, I sometimes use it for whelping or running dogs. Also try covering his crate, he may rest better.

My dogs are either 'on' all the time or are fading as soon as they enter the ring. MOSTLY fading, LOL! They can think of MUCH better things to be doing than showing! I do have one who loves nothing more than showing off, but that is not the norm in my breed. Funny girl, when people clap, she just turns it up a notch, until she is just barely in control. The judges love her!

Make sure your dog is having FUN in the ring!

I have never had that problem, unless it is VERY HOT. My dogs are usually right "on" when they are at a show and see the ring. I guess it depends on the breed. I have Newfies and they are not known for their high energy!!!! We almost always have early ring times for breed and then there is plenty of time for a nap and a re-group before group. I assume the dog is in great condition, otherwise group would not be an issue!!! The Pedialyte thing has worked well for me to keep them hydrated and usually a snack at lunch time....we bring dried salmon for a high protein snack.

I hope there are some more suggestions, I am sure many people have the same problem....personally it is ME that needs perking up by lunchtime!!!!

What I did with my afghans (but it depends on the individual dog) was let them sleep until maybe about 1 1/2 hours before group. Then they got a snack, and I took them out for a bit of a run and let them goof off, before they came back in for grooming. If they had a chance to sleep and then get out in the fresh air they'd be recharged again by the atmosphere in the building. One of my dogs went crazy for fur catnip mice and if I had one of them in my pocket I didn't need to worry about him not being "on".

I give my guys time in the crate and let them sleep and then like two hours before I feed and exercise them. Mine are short haired and not much for grooming so that is not a huge factor for us. Also mine sometimes seem like the energiser bunny they are so wired up and always ready to go. They have learned that in the crate means laze about and sleep and out means preform.

Oh what a lovely problem to have! Never been anywere near goups but when you have a field dog that prone to fade a small meal of tuna fish often helps.
