It is because the male cat penis is sharp and it causes pain.

CAT SOUNDS
Meowing
The single most common reason a cat will meow excessively is because it has been trained to do so. Your cat has probably learnt that all it has to do is meow and it gets whatever it wants - food, attention, affection.
Often, what starts out as a demand for attention soon becomes a self-reinforcing habit. This situation becomes even worse if the cat is lonely or bored.
The first step in breaking this habit is to exercise your cat daily with active play sessions. Secondly, pay attention to your cat and give it what it wants - but ONLY when it is quiet.
Purring
Purring has been described as a low, continuous, rattling hum and often is interpreted as an expression of pleasure or contentment. Purring also occurs in cats that are injured and in pain.
The Purr, is created, according to some feline experts, by the vibration of a Cat's vocal cords when it inhales and exhales. Yet, others who have studied felines believe Purring is a vibration caused by blood passing through a large vein in a Cat's chest

Dr Dee cracks me up!
Cats have little spikes on their penis' so the female can't/won't run away before mating is done.
Plus, sometimes the male bites the female on the neck or back.
Wow. I'm glad I"m not a cat!

The male gives a hard bite to the females scruff when they are mating. Saw it on the Discovery Channel about lions. Domestic cats are the same.

After the female signals with howling and posturing that she is ready for the male to mount, the male will grasp the scruff of her neck and bite to hold her until he finishes. In addition to the biting, the mating process is very painful to the female cat due to the anatomy of the male cat penis: The basal part of the glans (the head) is covered with horny spines which stimulate ovulation in the female, causing her to howl upon his ejaculation.

i think of you're doing an surprising activity purely rescuing her.. if she quite bothers you at night i might close your mattress room door.. rescue cats are not in all probability that affectionate as they might have long undergone some undesirable stuff in the previous you get carry of her... she isn't in all probability a canines maximum cats have slightly bit prissy to them... that is purely how cats are... I commend you for putting your "canines individual" status aside to grant a needy animal a house

Most of the animal kingdom are very violent when mating. The male wants it and takes it and it usually becomes a fight...Boy, it's like in our neighborhood, hah?! hehehe!
