With all the recent virus activity online this last couple of weeks Yes I am afraid to say that is very possibly your problem. If you can keep your system up long enough to click the link I will leave you here and download this program it will tell you about weather your system has a virus. This is a German program and provided you can get to it (your system willing) you want to download only the free version. Do not take the free trial do not let this program run on start up and do not allow it to run in REAL TIME. Read your options on install and pick custom install and read those windows as you install it. Once installed run this program and it will remove a ton of spyware malware trojans and or virus's. If your computer will not allow you to go to the site I put below than more than likely you do have a virus and it is simply preventing you to make any attempt what so ever to uninstall it or remove it. I have seen this happen to a few of my friends computers as well. It was virus related and most had to reformat windows. Which is not has hard as you think anymore. In fact if you google "reformating windows XP" you will get some very good instructions on some of those links. Some of which have Screen shots of exactly what you will see as you follow the steps.

Heres is the link to ewido http://www.ewido.net/

Good luck and I hope you get control back soon :)

The very last thing you want to do is use MSCONFIG, and disable everything. That will not fix your problem.

You might try disabling certain programs, that you believe to be the cause of the issue. But only as a means to narrow down to the culprit causing the problems.

While investigating your issue, try doing the following:

    > Right-click on My Computer

    > Select Manage

    > Click on Event Viewer

    > Select Application

Look through all the Error & Warning messages to try to determine which one started the same time as your problem. These messages will provide the following information:

    Error

A significant problem, such as loss of data or loss of functionality. For example, if a service fails to load during startup, an Error event will be logged.

    Warning

An event that is not necessarily significant, but may indicate a possible future problem. For example, when disk space is low, a Warning event will be logged.

    ------------

After you have more information, such as a more defined date of when the issue started, then Restore might be an option for you.

But, you may have to reformat, if a virus is the cause. Which, I'm sorry to say, sounds like the most likely candidate.

    Good luck!

#1 Uninstall the application from safe mode

#2 Restore the system to an earlier date before the program instrallation

#3 Be happy ever after :)

ive had plenty of viruses but never had the pc shut down

sounds more like a hardware prob.

dust can make a pc shut down try cleaning your pc out.

anything you use to clean make sure it is anti static or just blow the dust out of the pc.

one person i know took his pc to a store to have it fixed for the same prob turned out the pc chip under the the fan on the motherboard was clogged with dust the chip was overheating and shuting down .
