Any advice for a trip to Utah (not Salt Lake City) in late October?

I've already determined that Salt Lake is not our cup of tea, so we plan on heading to Moab, Arches, Canyonlands, maybe down into Page Arizona, Kanab and Zion and Bryce.

Any "must-sees" or places to avoid? Restaurant or hotel (no-chains, please) recommendations? Great hikes, walks or views?

Thanks!

all the parks and outdoor jems are so hard to choose from!!!..

canyonlands' maze is awesome, and not many people... the other parts of the park tend to be used more... but if you're going now you'll probably not see many people at all whereever you decide to go... but on second thought, they probably won't be open much longer for the season...

monument valley in the navajo rez is breathtaking.. you can go on a jeep ride with a local indian for the day and see awesome stuff... camping is right there too... although it'll be pretty cold at night... if you wanted to i'd bet you can find a guide that will take you out in the wilderness for camping too... just remember to barter with your price...

glen canyon will be an outdoor adventure since they've been in a drought for a decade.... the water's gone down and formations, trails and canyons are back taht have been under water for almost 50 years.. pure edward abbey lands again...

First of all, be aware of the elevation of the area that you will be visiting. The temperature drops about 2.7°F for every 1000 feet (1°C per 200 meters) of elevation gain.

Moab is located down along the Colorado River at an elevation of 4025 feet (1227 meters). Most of the attractions around Moab are located above the elevation of the town itself. If you run into overly cold autumn weather, just head to a lower elevation. The higher elevations around Moab can get snow in October, though Moab gets little snow.

That said, don't miss Landscape Arch, Delicate Arch, and the Windows in Arches National Park, Dead Horse Point State Park, Islands in the Sky at Canyonlands National Park, and Newspaper Rock State Historic Monument. If you have four-wheel drive, the Shafer Trail from Islands in the Sky back to Moab is a wonderful drive. There are petroglyphs & pictographs all along the Colorado River.

Lake Powell, Bryce Canyon National Park, and Zion National Park are all wonderful.

If you are into hiking and off-roading, Kanab area is a great place to start. The Grand Staircase Escalante Nat'l Monument is a vast area covered with so much scenery. It isn't widely known except to the locals. From there you can see Zion, Bryce, Lake Powell, and the North Rim of the Grand Canyon. There are millions of places and things to do. Just stop at any local store or place of business and the locals can tell you the most interesting places to visit. If you are going to stay in Kanab, there is a great place called the Victorian Charm Inn that is absolutly the best place to stay. Enjoy your time in Utah. I know I did.

Stay in Springdale at Zion, it was absolutely the best- We stayed in the Pioneer Hotel right in the center of the small town and could walk anywhere and caught the buses into Zion. The fall colors should be great. Hike early up to the falls- they are marked trails and all.Moab was nice, we hit a rainstorm and couldn't canyoneer but did do riverrafting and LOVED it! The highway 12 we took between Zion and moab as GREAT for scenic and everything- so glad we took it but it was a LONG drive- maybe 6-8 hours. 12 takes you through diff. parks too so its good for that. Get your park pass- it was so worth the 50.00. I got mine on line. HAVE FUN!
