Why does my laptop keep crashing on startup? Before I start, I am NOT a technical person, so please give any..
answers in a in simple, non-techie language that I will understand! Thanks!
My TIME laptop crashes continuously when I start it up after being switched off all day. Sometimes it loads Windows, then crashes. Sometimes, I switch it on, it whirs, the hard drive light comes on, then everything stops and I have to disconnect the power and start again.Once it's up and running (after many, many attempts), it generally runs fine for the rest of the day, although adjusting the angle of the screen can occasionally cause it to crash, too. So I switch it off at night, then the next morning go through the same procedure all over again.
The laptop is pretty old (around 3 yrs) - I have checked for viruses, partially de-fragmented and tried starting in safe mode (although it often crashes before the point where I can start safe mode anyway). It's not a problem with the fans, because this happens in the mornings, when it's cool. Any suggestions would be VERY welcome.
I use Windows XP
Memory capacity is 27.9GB, I'm using 20.1GB
Couldn't find answer to CPU question, sorry.

when u say old, let me take it as pentium series 1, 2 or 3. no config details are provided and hence assume clock speed & RAM are pretty low.
Consult a hardware tech and if the cost for changing your internals may sometimes exceed buying a new pc.
i assume, problem is with ur hardisk....buy a new pc rather than fixing this old model...
24/10/06: Go to Start----Control panel----System, u can find out CPU details, speed, RAM etc. Tell what Pentium motherboard u have?
- hard disk seems to be ok. if you have unused, unwanted stuff, first wipe it out from computer memory. make free more hard disk space.
- check ur power connection, obviously seems to have problem.
- defragment ur disk
- if ur pentium is old and running windows xp on it, u may get hang-ups.

What is the make and model of your laptop? How much RAM (memory) is installed ? What version of Windows are you running? What is the speed of your CPU (processor) ? . Also, How big is your hard drive, and how much of it is used? You can find this answer by just clicking on my computer
You did say it does it when you adjust the position of the screen, could be you have a loose connection to the screen or the wire is pinched. I had that problem on my Compaq M700. It didnt make the computer reboot , the screen would be black or full of lines, but it could be part of your problem. More information is needed.
NOTE: You listed your hard drive size as your memory size I think. Please RIGHT click MY COMPUTER - then LEFT click PROPERTIES - That is where your Memory (RAM) in MB or GB is listed and Processor Speed (CPU) in MHZ or GHZ is listed Also, the version of WINDOWS you are using will be there.
If you are still having trouble finding the info, just use this download it will show you everything

Since it crashes when you adjust the screen it sounds like an electrical problem and not a software problem. I would bring it to a computer repair shop to have them check it out. They may just suggest getting a new laptop as the cost to repair can sometimes cost more than a new laptop.

Sounds like a loose connection at the power supply, internally.(where the plug plugs) See if you can get the lights in front to flicker while playing with the power plug before turning it on.
Also, I once had a prob with a hard drive needing to warm up b4 it would run straight. needed to start it 5-8 times b4 it would stop crashing.
Good luck

It sounds like there is a problem with one of the drivers during start up. Your computer is trying to start a system program and when the error occurs, the systems can't function...thus, why it crashes.
Unfortunately, I don't think i can help you fix the problem. What you can try doing, is starting up in "safe mode"...if you press F8 during start up, you should be able to boot your computer in that mode. If it successfully boots, then it is clearly a problem with your drivers.

you (or your laptop to be specific) have a virus (a bad thing), reset (put it back to it's original state)the whole pc (laptop that is) by doing (running the program) a recovery (repair) install (installation) from the recovery disc (cd) thats been delivered (handed over) with your laptop, which you know what that is...
good luck

It sounds like you need to add more memory or if you have a lot of programs that take up a lot of ur memory, consider deleting some of them that you don't need.
