Is it wrong to put a Fish out of its misery?
By flushing a fish down the toilet?
My fish had this dease for some time, his skin was being eaten up. It got so bad that his mouth sealed up, making it inpossible to eat. So I did the best that I knew to do, and flushed him down the toilet. Well I asked this question to people on here, and they were saying "How Cruel I was" How in-humane" 'how I should of found another way to do it" Like What????? Any other way would made my lil fish suffer worse. I wasnt about to watch my fish starve to death, or decay in a slow agganizing death. People take their pets to be put down by Vets. "how do they know that doesnt hurt"? I simply flushed my fish, & now Im being thrown guilty fish killer!
Please, help me out with this. Be honest in your answers :-)

You did the right thing, how do people think animals are killed so that they can eat them. You stopped the fish suffering dont feel guilty.

Killing a sick fish is not a bad thing if you don't think it'll survive or it's in a lot of pain.
If you flush a fish, it's scary as hell for the fish. The change in temperature will shock them, then wushing around through the pipes will be even worse. All the chlorine and chemicals in the water will slowly poison and kill the fish, giving it a pretty gnarly death.
There have been cases of fish surving a flushing, though. The poor things end up in vats of human waste, and either make it into the wild and screw up the local ecosystem or live a disgusting, poo-filled life.
I think the best way to humanely kill a fish is with a sharp knife to the spine. It's quick, if nothing else. I personally can't do that, so I end up freezing the fish in a bag with some tank water in it. I know that's not a pleasant death, either, but I can't stab a pet, nor will I flush it.

It is considered wrong because the fish dies slowly. It will stay alive during the flush and then suffocate to death in the nasty septic tank. That is why it is considered cruel or inhumane. A much better way to put down a fish is to drop it into a bowl of ice-water. The ice sends them into shock immediately and the fish is dead in less than 30 seconds. This method is much better anyways, you can thtow it away after and not worry about sewage line problems later.

There are several methods for putting a fish out if its misery. I would say the toilet one is not the best. My preferred one is to freeze it. I put it in a small cup of tank water and put it in the freezer. My thoughts are 1) it's in water and in the dark so less stress 2) people who nearly freeze to death talk about just getting really sleepy and it may not be any different for a fish.
Other people use methods such as sharp knife to the spinal cord, throwing it hard against a surface, and some kind of knock-out drops (tranquilizer?). There are probably other ways as well.

Its not a biggie but next time you may want to kill the fish quickly before flushing. By flushing you probably did make it die a slow death since you didn't kill it you simply moved it to an inhospitable environment. At the end of the day its still just a fish not unlike the millions killed every day in the quest to feed hungry humans. Move on with your life it was a sick fish............

Put the fish in a plastic cup and put it in the freezer until frozen. The just "go to sleep". Flushing them is not good as they probably live a while in the sewer in unspeakable conditions.
Fish are fish. They aren't like a dog or cat that feels pain the same way we do (I think). But I still wouldn't want them to suffer needlessly.

Putting the fish out of its misery it fine but flushing it is one of the most inhumane ways to do it.
If there is every a next time check this site out, http://www.kokosgoldfish.invisionzone.com/forum/in...
It explains all the different ways to do it and which ways are the most humane.

I don't think that you are a "fish killer". I don't think that you are really thinking about this........fish live in water, so it is not like you are drowning it by flushing it down the toilet! So it probably lived for a while! lol! Anyway....it's a fish, ask those people what they eat when they go out to Captain D's or any other fish places! lol!

Placing your fish in a container in the freezer is a more humane way of euthanizing it. The water gradually cools below the fish's temperature. The fish "goes to sleep" similar to a human who is hypothermic.

Well flushing him down the toilet didnt kill him it just sent him to teh sewer where his life wold b worse till he died. Ive heard of freezing them and it just puts them 2 sleep then they die in their sleep.
