Can a Boy Scout be the best man at a wedding?

My 9 year old son, Thomis (yes, Thomis, not Thomas), who at the moment is 9 years old, till 11-20-2006, who as of August 9th, 2006 became the most decorated Cub Scout in the history of the Cub Scouting Program, was tapped out by my fiance to be the "Best Man" for my up in comeing wedding March 31st, 2007. This left me tickled pink of course.

I have no problem with this, my finace has no problem with this, my exwife has no problem with this, the Cub/Boy Scouts have no problem with this...but does the State of Michigan have a problem with this? To my knowledge, the State of Michigan requires two witnesses over the age of 18 to make a wedding legal, which I can provide. But still, are there any Michigan, or Federal Laws which state that a 10 year old can not be the best man, if I still have 2 18+ y/o witnesse?

First of all, congratulations for having such a fine son! You can sure be proud of him!

I've never heard of any age restriction for a Best Man, as long as you have the proper witnesses. Call the Court House where you will be getting your marriage license and ask.

Best wishes for a long and happy marriage!

The only rule is tha tyou have two - over 18 - witnesses. While in most weddings, the best man acts as a witness - that's just because it's easiest, it's not a legal requirement. In fact - you could get married without a wedding party if you wanted, as long as two people in the audience signed as witnesses!

I was 18 when I got married, and 3 of my 4 attendents were 17, including my sister who was my maid of honor. We just had the other bridesmaid sign.

You can have anyone you want as you best man, as long as you have 2 witnesses that are over 18. I read an article than a couple had their dogs as best man and brides maid, but they had other witnesses too.

Of course you can have your son as your "Best Man". Your two witnesses can be your parents, groomsmen, bridesmaids, or any of the guests at your wedding. In other words your best man doesn't have to sign as a witness if he doesn't want to. So, yes your son can be "Best Man".

why not have one of the groomsmen sign on the dotted line? all you have to do is call the county court house where you live and ask if someone else can sign. i think now a days it's all a technicality anyway as to who stands next to you at the alter.

Your son can be the best man...however, he will not be able to sign the marriage certificate. You will need two of your groomsmen (usually) to sign it in his place.

The best Best Men are Boy Scouts. Try it and see for yourself.

Go for it, you just need another person to sign the marriage license.

    The real question should be:

Will he get a badge for it? I hope so.
