Is anyone else annoyed by "The Best of Answers" display taking up so much space at the top of the questions?

Yes, it annoys me. I imagine some people like it though so if there was a way you could choose if it shows up for you or not, that'd be ideal. It'd also be nice if you could choose which categories show up for you.

But they need to have more of a selection because I have seen the one about the child biting her nails, untill they are all boring and

now because they are repeated so often I do not pay attention

I am. It has also crowded out the tabs for voting and rating on the front page. That, I think, is just plain stupid. Why can't those tabs be on the front page? Do we really need the "best of answers" to be so very in-your-face?

And who's decision is it that these are the "Best Of.." answer. What makes them so.

The space issue drives me nuts as well.

I'm annoyed. I really couldn't care less about that. They should show examples to people who haven't signed in yet.
