Quitting smoking is a great opportunity to learn about ourselves.

Congratulate yourself on having the desire to stop - then you are over the worst, but still need to maintain your resolve. It's just so easy to start thinking that just one won't hurt, but it does. Just one achieves nothing except feeling the need for another. Whatever you do, don't have just one. Beware - alcohol will weaken your resolve.

Here's a few home-brewed tips that might be useful.

It's not just nicotine addiction - there are 50+ chemicals in cigarettes. Also the main problem is habit.

We have been used to having body sensations which we translate as 'my body needs something', which we have attempted to satisfy by having a cigarette.

When we try to stop smoking, we still get these 'my body needs something' sensations, and we still feel that we want a cigarette. We have to train our body to be more selective. When we feel we need something, we have to work out what it is that we actually need.

A glass of water is an excellent substitute if nothing else comes to mind, as it helps with the clearance of the toxic substances in our body. Another good substitute is a bag of salted peanuts, used in combination with the water.

Another thing to do is to find an activity which occupies the mind or body. Go swimming - nobody wants to smoke while they are swimming. Slowly, as our body adjusts and translates the 'want something' feelings into something other than cigarettes, then the feelings begin to go away. We know its not a cigarette that the body really needs, because as soon as we've had one we still have the feeling, and want another!

We will have a few bouts of feeling or even being short tempered. We must try to bite our lip, and control; ourselves. Recognise the short temper as being the removal of toxins which are trying to find a way out. They went in through the mouth, and they try to get out that way to. We must learn to keep our mouth closed, and force the toxins out the other way.

After we have stopped for a while we will begin to feel that just one wont to any harm.

All that leads to is a desire for just another one. We must guard very strongly against the desire to have just one.

    Don't hate me... cold turkey.

I smoked for 16 years. Tried everything under the sun. Finally I was just ready and then it was a non-issue. I just stopped and never looked back.

So I think it's not just about how you go about it, it's more are you ready? If you really don't want to quit, it's going to be really tough.

I also had cut back dramatically. I would go a day or two without a one so by the time I quit, I was used to going 24 hours or so without a smoke.

I don't smoke, and never have; that being said, every single one of my friends who has successfully quit has gone cold-turkey. I know it's not what you wanted to hear, but they had all tried other things, and they just didn't work. And when all is said and done, what good is "easy" if it doesn't work? I can't decide for you; I'm just telling you what I've seen among my friends who used to smoke.

I quit by chewing gum, just regular Extra gum. Everytime I craved a cigarette, I just popped a piece of gum in my mouth. It was not easy by any means, but I did it nonetheless. The other way I quit (I have quit twice now) is that I got pregnant.....I didn't want to cause negative problems with my baby....good luck

Nothing worth doing is ever easy.

Try different things to see what works. I tried cold turkey - didn't work. I tried the patch - didn't work. I tried the gum - didn't work. I tried cold turkey again - didn't work. I tried slowly cutting back, didn't work. I tried cold turkey - didn't work. I tried cold turkey again - it finally did work.

Good luck. I'm sure you'll find something that works for you.

I quit by working my way down to Carlton's and when I could take my fingers off the holes in the filter I knew I had it beat.

well, when my mom quit smoking, she went to a hipnotis. and he hipnotized her to quit smoking it was only 40 bucks, the prise of a carton of cigarettes. and it really worked too! but then she started smoking again because she is kind of the stuborn type of person. and she was getting mad and nervous about everything so she just decided to start smoking again. but she never craved a cigarrete tho when she stopped.

You can go to your doctor and request Zyban or Wellbutrin...they're the same thing. It really does work. You have to be willing to quit, but talk to your doctor about all the details.

Okay. I won't. Even though it is. Never heard of anything other than that - that works. And I've heard it all.
