Is Gateway a good brand for desktop computers?

My aunt is buying the family a new computer as an early christmas gift so I'm checking out Future Shop and the main brand they seem to have is HP. But there are a few Gateway. Is Gateway anygood or should I be going with one of the HPs??

To be honest, HP computers is the better choice if I were you. Gateway is good but I heard they have a few problems in the past, but I'm not sure about now. Best go with HP.

A few years back I bought a Gateway 507GR through Circuit City and never had a problem with it, it is still going strong and has definately outlasted the EMachine which was my first desktop. My laptops were Dell Inspiron , Inspiron was great but I destroyed it by dropping it and IBM thinkpad, the thinkpad is still great (runs Linux).

If I had it to do all over again I'd probably get a MAC since my only real problems have been Windows or IE related. Macs are

still performimg better and have less headaches then a PC. So in answer to your Question yes Gateway is a good desktop, you may want to compare tech support and customer service between the two companies and read product reviews in reference to the models

The HP is the best buy. I have 2 Compaqs and 1 HP. Yes I have 3 total. Both are made by HP. The HP is 6years old and still going strong. People I know have bought Gateways and had a lot of problems. HP's tech support is good. You can get good deals at Wal Mart on compuuters, HP, Compaq, E-Machines.

A computer is as good as it's components. Make sure you get a backup disc.

I bought a Gateway 450 GL back in 1998. It is still running to this day. That was before they merged/bought Emachines. The only thing I did was upgrade it to Win 98 SE.

I bought a 2nd Gateway in 2000. I still have it too, but the harddrive went bad in it. It was a harddrive I put in though, not Gateway's harddrive.

All my other purchases have been Dells. I have not had any problems with them.

HP is rated better than Dell in Consumer Reports, but only slightly better.

    Model they rated:

    Pavilion a1310y 2.93 GHz Intel Pentium 4 517

Gateway, Acer, and Emachines are the current jokes of the computer industry (for anyone who actually knows what they are doing). HP is a proven workhorse of a system. I own 5 of them. Before you buy, tho, you really ought to shop around and get t6he best deal, not just the one with the best looking website.

When you are ready to buy a new system, go to www.stupidcheapcomputers.net. I buy all of my stuff from them, and everything is Vista ready.

Microsoft is about to release its latest operating system, Vista, in January. It’s going to make all of these “bargain” computers nothing but JUNK as soon as it’s released. The reason that you are seeing so many cheap systems on the market right now is because a lot of them CAN’T RUN Vista and the merchants are trying to dump them as hard and fast as they can before Vista shows up and everyone learns what a piece of crap they were sold for $500 (or whatever).

Anyway, I bought a complete, new system from stupidcheapcomputers.net with a warranty for LESS than it would cost me to build it myself or order a custom one from the manufacturer. You can use my frequent buyer code: ATX926. That will get an additional 10% discount at checkout.

I have NEVER had any problems with anything that they have sold me and their customer service is outstanding. Those guys blow my mind.

    Good luck!

I would go with an a HP. I had 2 HP desktops and 1 HP laptop and I never had a problem with them (except for viruses that I probably brought on myself!!) However, I have heard a few people that got Gateways and had to send them back because there was a problem with the hardware.

    Good luck!

i perfer gateway.. altho i had both.. HP does have in your face things as one answer gave you.. and gateway has or did have gateway go back.. where if you need 2 go back in time when your comp was working better.. like restore, but easier.. and if you have a problem, just pick up the phone and gateway will walk you through whatever it is..

I love my Gateway, but HPs are good too. Be sure to get something that is more powerful than what you actually need.

Get at least a 160GB hard drive, 512 RAM, 2.53 GHz or more proccessing speed and get yourself a high speed cable connection. Dial up and DSL stink!

    >There aren't any good "assembly line" computers...between the two you mentioned, take the HP...then get a good (notice the word "good") tech to take all the unnecessary HP crap software off it and you will probably have something approaching OK.<
