What's the safest way to clean turpentine of a cat?
Our cat came inside tonight smelling of turpentine. I've tried to clean it off with some gentle soap and water but I think the turpentine is getting to him. He is doing things he's never done before.

call you vet and ask him if dawn dish soap is safe on cats - but otherwise I would endorse it, its used on ducks and wildlife in the case of oil spills. Turpentine used to actually be made from Pine, but now it is usually a petroleum distillate. Do NOT let your kitten lick himself clean. Its toxic stuff! watch him, and if you have to, make one of those lampshade collars for him. Google "lampshade collar instructions" and "pets"
here is a link to discuss with your vet. - but be sure to CALL them for advice. Calling is free.
Good luck to you and your kitty

Try Dawn dish soap. If that doesn't take care of it, call your vet's office immediately. It can kill your cat. Try the Dawn first, it works great at removing things like that. Also providing the Dawn works, call your vet and get your cat checked out to make sure that it didn't do any harm to him. Best wishes.

He smells of turpentine, hey did you ever consider he somehow ingested it and could be poisoned. You did say he was acting strangely..I'd personally take him to a vet immediately, just like anti-freeze some chemicals kill our pets fast and very horribly. Take him to a vet.

Clean him with some baby shampoo; however, if the smeel continues, use some nutrogena shampoo. It's small and light yellow in a boxy sort of tube...you can get this at walgreens, and it works very well. You should keep him in for a couple nights until the scent is gone.
